North Western Railway Apprentice Selection Process 2026

Selection will be made on the basis of a merit list. The notification does not prescribe a separate written examination or CBT as the standard selection stage.

The selection process includes the following stages:

1. Merit List Preparation

The merit list is prepared using the simple average of the percentage of marks obtained in Class 10 and ITI.

Merit calculation:

Merit percentage = (Class 10 percentage + ITI percentage) ÷ 2

For Class 10, marks obtained in all subjects are considered. For ITI, the marks mentioned in the provisional or final certificate are used.

2. Tie-Breaking Rule

If two candidates obtain the same merit percentage, the older candidate will be preferred. If their dates of birth are also the same, the candidate who passed Class 10 earlier will be considered first.

3. Document Verification

Candidates included in the merit list will be required to produce their original educational, technical and other applicable certificates.

4. Medical Examination

Candidates must meet the prescribed medical fitness requirements and provide the required medical certificate.

The final merit list will be prepared division-wise, unit-wise, trade-wise and community-wise. There is no single centralised merit list for all units.

Training Period and Stipend

Selected candidates will undergo apprenticeship training under the Apprentices Act, 1961.

The notification states that the training period and stipend will be governed by the applicable rules and Railway Board directives.

Candidates should note the following:

  • Hostel accommodation will not be provided.

  • Selected candidates must make their own accommodation arrangements.

  • An apprenticeship training contract must be entered into before training begins.

  • Completion of apprenticeship does not guarantee permanent employment in Indian Railways.

The exact training duration and stipend should be verified from the applicable rules and official instructions.

Documents Required for Application

Candidates should keep the following documents ready, as applicable:

  • Class 10 mark sheet and certificate

  • Relevant ITI certificate and mark sheet

  • Aadhaar card or prescribed identity document

  • Recent colour passport-size photograph

  • Scanned signature

  • SC / ST certificate, where applicable

  • OBC Non-Creamy Layer certificate and declaration, where applicable

  • EWS certificate, where applicable
