RRB JE Recruitment 2026: 4,029 Vacancies, Eligibility, Exam Pattern, Salary & Important Dates

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have released the detailed recruitment notification under CEN No. 04/2026 for Junior Engineer (JE), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS) and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA) posts.

After the corrigendum issued in August, the total number of vacancies stands at 4,029. The recruitment offers technical government job opportunities in Indian Railways under Pay Level 6, with an initial basic pay of ₹35,400.

Educational Qualification

Junior Engineer

Candidates applying for JE posts generally need a three-year Diploma in Engineering or an equivalent/higher engineering qualification such as B.E./B.Tech in the relevant discipline.

The required engineering branch depends on the particular JE post. Eligible disciplines include prescribed branches across areas such as:

Depot Material Superintendent

Candidates need the prescribed three-year Diploma in Engineering, with the detailed qualification conditions given in the notification.

Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant

For CMA, candidates need a B.Sc. qualification involving Physics and Chemistry, with the prescribed combination and minimum marks specified in the CEN. The qualification must be possessed by the closing date of the application.


RRB JE Age Limit

The prescribed age limit is:

18 to 33 years

The age is calculated as of 1 January 2027.

Age relaxation is available to eligible candidates according to Railway/RRB rules. Major relaxations include:

  • SC/ST: 5 years

  • OBC-NCL: 3 years

  • PwBD: 10–15 years depending on category

  • Ex-Servicemen: As applicable under the notification

Candidates should refer to the detailed CEN for the exact relaxation applicable to their category.


RRB JE 2026 Exam Pattern

The selection process consists of two Computer-Based Tests, followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination.

Duration: 120 minutes.

The Technical Abilities section carries 100 questions and 100 marks and is based on the relevant technical discipline/exam group. A virtual calculator is also provided during CBT 2.

There is 1/3 negative marking for every incorrect answer in CBT 2 as well.


RRB JE Selection Process

The selection process consists of:

  1. First Stage CBT

  2. Second Stage CBT

  3. Document Verification

  4. Medical Examination

CBT 1 is used for screening and shortlisting candidates for CBT 2. The final selection process is based on the prescribed merit and subsequent document and medical requirements.


RRB JE Salary 2026

JE, DMS and CMA posts are placed under Pay Level 6 of the 7th CPC Pay Matrix.

Initial Basic Pay: ₹35,400 per month

Selected candidates are also entitled to applicable allowances and benefits under Railway rules.

The actual monthly salary will depend on applicable allowances, deductions and posting location.

The application submission deadline was 13 September 2026, while fee payment and subsequent modification-related windows continue separately according to the published schedule.


Application Fee

The application fee structure includes:

  • ₹500 for candidates in the applicable general category

  • ₹250 for eligible categories covered under the reduced-fee provision

The applicable portion of the fee is refundable after appearing in the first-stage CBT, subject to the conditions specified in the notification. Candidates should check the CEN for the exact category-wise fee and refund conditions.

Candidates were required to submit their applications online through the Railway Recruitment Board's designated application system.
