AIBE Eligibility 2026: LL.B, Final-Semester Rules, Age Limit and Attempts
AIBE eligibility is narrower than most candidates expect. The Bar Council of India allows only law students and graduates of BCI-recognised universities or BCI-approved colleges to appear, and from AIBE XX onward it has opened registration to final-semester LL.B students with no backlogs. AIBE XXII, the current cycle, is scheduled for 29 November 2026.
This page explains who can apply, the four eligibility categories in the BCI notification, the undertaking and documents each category needs, the rules on age, attempts and percentage, and the situations that make a candidate ineligible. It also covers the enrolment-certificate upload that candidates who pass on an undertaking must complete afterwards, because missing that step can hold back a Certificate of Practice even after a pass.

Who Can Apply: The Four Eligibility Categories
The BCI notification of 27 September 2025, which applies from AIBE XX onward, sets out the categories of candidates who may register. The undertaking form asks you to state which one applies to you.
Category | Who it covers | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
1. Final-semester students | Students in the final semester of a 3-year or 5-year LL.B | No backlog in any earlier semester |
2. Awaiting results or degree | Students who have finished final-semester exams, and graduates who have passed but not yet received the degree | No backlog from earlier semesters |
3. Graduates not enrolled | LL.B degree holders not yet enrolled with a State Bar Council, or who surrendered their enrolment | Degree from a BCI-recognised institution |
4. Employed graduates | Graduates working in a job or service who have not enrolled, or have surrendered enrolment | A pass gives a limited enrolment window, described below |
Advocates already enrolled with a State Bar Council on an undertaking to pass the AIBE register in the usual way with their enrolment details.
Educational Qualification
The only academic requirement is a recognised law degree, or being in the final semester of one.
Degree type: A 3-year LL.B after graduation, or a 5-year integrated LL.B such as a B.A. LL.B or BBA LL.B.
Recognition: The university must be recognised by the BCI, or the college must be BCI-approved and affiliated to such a university. The notification makes the candidate responsible for checking this.
Mode of study: The degree must be a regular LL.B course approved by the BCI. Correspondence or distance-mode law degrees are generally not accepted by the BCI for enrolment, so check with your State Bar Council if your degree was not a regular course.
Foreign law degrees: Holders of foreign law degrees need BCI recognition of their qualification for enrolment in India. Contact the BCI before registering.
Age Limit, Attempts and Minimum Marks
Rule | Position | Source |
|---|---|---|
Upper age limit for AIBE | None | Not stated in the AIBE notification |
Minimum age | None separately; you must be eligible for LL.B | Not stated in the AIBE notification |
Number of attempts | Unlimited; reappear until you pass | Official AIBE website (About page) |
Minimum LL.B percentage | None | Not stated in the AIBE notification |
Passing marks in AIBE | 45% (General and OBC), 40% (SC, ST and PwD), subject to moderation | BCI result notices |
Because there is no age limit and no cap on attempts, you do not lose eligibility by failing. You only need to register again for a later cycle and pay the fee.
Final-Semester Students: Rules and Documents
Final-semester registration is the main change of recent cycles, and it is where most rejections happen. Read these conditions carefully.
No backlogs: You must have cleared every earlier semester. A pending paper from any previous semester makes you ineligible for that cycle.
Marksheets to upload: Self-attested, scanned marksheets of Semesters I to V for a 3-year LL.B, or Semesters I to IX for a 5-year LL.B.
Scan, not photo: The notification asks for scanned copies, not pictures taken on a mobile phone.
Undertaking: A signed undertaking in the BCI format, stating your category and confirming that your institution is recognised.
Candidates who have finished the course but are waiting for the degree upload marksheets of Semesters I to VI (3-year LL.B) or I to X (5-year LL.B). The undertaking form is available on the official AIBE notification page.
Employed Graduates and Surrendered Enrolment
Graduates in a job or service who are not enrolled, or who surrendered their enrolment to take up employment, fall under a separate category. According to the BCI undertaking, if they pass the AIBE they are eligible for enrolment for six months, after which they must reappear to continue practising. If you plan to leave your job for practice later, time your attempt accordingly and read the current notification before registering.
Category and PwD Provisions
Unlike recruitment exams, the AIBE has no age relaxation to offer, because there is no age limit. Category status affects only the fee and the passing mark, plus extra support for candidates with disabilities.
Category | Fee (as reported) | Passing mark rule | Other provisions |
|---|---|---|---|
General | Rs. 3,560 | 45% | None |
OBC | Rs. 3,560 | 45% | None |
SC and ST | Rs. 2,560 | 40% | Category certificate needed |
PwD | Confirm on the portal | 40% | 20 minutes per hour extra time and scribe rules for disability above 40% |
For AIBE XXI, moderation brought the pass marks down to 42 and 37 out of 100. Candidates who use a scribe must follow the scribe rules in the examination guidelines, which differ by type of disability, and carry the certified disability certificate to the centre. For AIBE XX, the BCI also issued a separate notice for blind and low-vision candidates, so check the notice board for any similar notice for AIBE XXII.
Who Is Not Eligible
Unrecognised institutions: Students and graduates of colleges or universities not recognised or approved by the BCI cannot appear.
Students with backlogs: A final-semester or awaiting-result student with a pending paper from an earlier semester.
Students before the final semester: Students in earlier semesters are not covered by the notification.
False declarations: The undertaking warns that false information about academic or enrolment status may lead to disqualification or withdrawal of eligibility for enrolment.
A related point is often misread. The official AIBE website notes that a person who does not intend to practise cannot be exempted from enrolment in order to take the exam. The AIBE exists for those entering practice, not as a general law certificate.

Application Fee
Category | Fee (as reported for AIBE XXII) |
|---|---|
General and OBC | Rs. 3,500 plus Rs. 60 bank charges (Rs. 3,560) |
SC and ST | Rs. 2,500 plus Rs. 60 bank charges (Rs. 2,560) |
The fee figures are as reported for AIBE XXII; confirm the amount and any PwD rate on the payment page before you pay. For AIBE XXI, caste category, PwD status and exam city could not be edited after fee payment, so choose them carefully.
After You Pass: Enrolment Certificate Upload
Passing the AIBE on an undertaking is not the end of the process. Candidates who registered before enrolment must later upload their State Bar Council enrolment certificate on the AIBE portal so that the Certificate of Practice can be processed.
Current deadline: A notice dated 7 July 2026 set 6 January 2027 as the last date for submission by candidates from AIBE XIX onward, under BCI letter dated 23 June 2026.
Status labels: Results for such candidates may show as passed with an undertaking or withheld until the certificate is uploaded.
Read the letter: The notice refers candidates to the BCI letter for the exact conditions, so read it if you passed in AIBE XIX, XX or XXI.
On the portal, the same screen is used to submit your enrolment number, enrolment certificate, photograph and signature to the BCI for printing of the Certificate of Practice.

How to Check Your Eligibility Before Applying
Confirm recognition: Check that your university and college are on the BCI's list of recognised institutions, or ask your college office for its BCI approval status.
Check your backlog status: If you are in the final semester, make sure every earlier semester is cleared before you register.
Identify your category: Pick the right category from the undertaking so your uploads match.
Prepare scans early: Scan semester marksheets, photograph and signature in the required format before the portal opens.
Plan the enrolment step: If you will register before enrolment, note when you expect to enrol so you can upload the certificate in time.
