AMCAT Syllabus: Module-Wise Topics and Study Plan
The AMCAT syllabus is a set of module-wise topic lists, not one fixed syllabus. Every candidate takes the compulsory aptitude and personality modules, and then adds domain modules that match the job roles they want. This page walks through the topics published on the official AMCAT website so you can decide what to study first.
Unlike a government exam, AMCAT is used by hiring companies. That means the official site, not a notification, is the source for topics, and the list can be updated.
Table of Contents
AMCAT syllabus
Module | Type | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
English | Compulsory | 18 | 18 minutes |
Quantitative Ability Tech | Compulsory (technical streams) | 16 | 20 minutes |
Quantitative Ability | Compulsory (other streams) | 14 | 20 minutes |
Logical Ability | Compulsory | 12 | 15 minutes |
Information Gathering and Synthesis | Compulsory | 12 | 15 minutes |
AMPI | Compulsory | 90 | 20 minutes |
Domain modules | Chosen by role | Varies | Varies |
The official page does not mark which quantitative version applies to which stream, so treat the stream labels above as a general guide and check your slot instructions. Our exam pattern page for AMCAT explains the format in more detail.
Key points to know before you start
The test is adaptive: Difficulty moves up after a correct answer and down after a wrong one, so you must be solid on basics before attempting advanced questions.
Domain choice matters: You pick modules that suit your target roles, so a coding aspirant and a marketing aspirant study very different material.
The official list repeats some modules: A few modules appear more than once on the official page with slightly different details, so rely on the sample paper for your module when in doubt.
No negative marking: The official FAQ says there is no negative marking, so cover topics broadly rather than skipping questions.
English syllabus
The English module has 18 questions in 18 minutes. It tests the everyday written English that an employer expects in emails and reports.
Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Vocabulary | Synonyms, antonyms, contextual vocabulary |
Grammar | Error identification, sentence improvement, sentence construction |
Comprehension | Reading comprehension passages |
Reading comprehension takes the most time per question, so practise passages in short timed bursts. Vocabulary questions are quick, so use them to bank time.
Quantitative ability syllabus
There are two versions on the official page. The standard version has 14 questions in 20 minutes. The tech version has 16 questions in 20 minutes and adds engineering mathematics.
Version | Area | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
Quantitative Ability | Basic numbers | Numbers, decimal fractions |
Quantitative Ability | Applied mathematics | Word problems on interest, inverse, profit and speed |
Quantitative Ability | Number theory | Divisibility, HCF and LCM |
Quantitative Ability Tech | Basic mathematics | Divisibility, HCF and LCM, numbers, decimal fractions, power |
Quantitative Ability Tech | Applied mathematics | Profit and loss, simple and compound interest, time, speed and distance, inverse |
Quantitative Ability Tech | Engineering mathematics | Logarithms, permutations and combinations, probability |
Start with number properties and percentages, because most word problems rely on them. Add permutations, combinations and probability only after the arithmetic feels automatic.
Logical ability syllabus
Logical Ability has 12 questions in 15 minutes and splits into two reasoning styles.
Deductive reasoning
Coding logic and logical word sequence
Data sufficiency and objective reasoning
Directional sense
Selection decision tables and puzzles
Inductive reasoning
Analogy and classification
Coding patterns
Number series and pattern recognition
Puzzles and decision tables take longest. Practise them separately so you learn how to set up a grid quickly.
Information gathering and synthesis
This module has 12 questions in 15 minutes. The official topics are data interpretation, information ordering and information processing. In practice that means reading a table, chart or short set of facts, arranging the information in a sensible order and drawing a conclusion. Tables with two or three variables are a good starting point.
AMPI personality inventory
AMPI has 90 questions in 20 minutes and is based on the five-factor model: extraversion, conscientiousness, neuroticism, openness to experience and agreeableness. There is nothing to memorise. The practical advice is to read the sample paper once, answer quickly and stay consistent, because you have only a few seconds per statement.
Domain module syllabus
The official page lists more than thirty domain modules. Pick the ones that match your degree and target roles. The table groups them as the official sample papers do.
Group | Modules |
|---|---|
General | Automata Fix, Physics, Chemistry, Basic Biology, Marketing, Financial Accounting, Banking Services, Human Resources, Operations Management, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Front Office, Housekeeping, Culinary Skills, Food and Beverage Service, Basic Statistics, Computer Science |
Engineering | Computer Science, Electronics and Semiconductors, Telecommunication, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Instrumentation, Industrial, Production, Metallurgical, Chemical, Automotive, Petrochemical, Aeronautical, Paint Technology, Polymer |
Management | Financial and Banking Services, Marketing, Human Resources, Operations Management |
Popular domain modules in detail
Module | Questions and time | Topics to cover |
|---|---|---|
Automata Fix | 7 questions, 20 minutes | Fixing logical or syntax errors and completing code; control structures, conditionals, data structures, sorting and searching |
Computer Science | 20 questions, 20 minutes | Operating systems and architecture, DBMS (normalisation, SQL, joins, indexing), computer networks |
Electronics and Semiconductors | 12 questions, 15 minutes | Devices, analog and digital electronics, op-amps, Boolean algebra, VLSI basics |
Mechanical Engineering | 12 questions, 15 minutes | Manufacturing science, thermodynamics and IC engines, fluid and machine mechanics |
Civil Engineering | 40 questions, 25 minutes | Structural engineering, geotechnical and water resources, transportation and surveying |
Electrical Engineering | 12 questions, 15 minutes | Electrical machines, instrumentation and control, power electronics |
Marketing | 16 questions, 15 minutes | Marketing basics, research, mix, pricing, advertising and brand management |
Financial Accounting | 15 questions, 15 minutes | Journal and ledger, financial reporting, statement analysis and ratios |
Human Resources | 15 questions, 15 minutes | HR management, organisational behaviour, industrial relations |
Basic Statistics | 12 questions, 15 minutes | Descriptive statistics, inference and hypothesis testing, probability |
Counts and times are as shown on the official syllabus page and may change. For the full topic list of any other module, open its sample paper on the official sample papers page.
Which topics to start with
If you are | Start with | Then add |
|---|---|---|
Weak in maths | Percentages, ratio, profit and loss | Number theory, time and work, probability |
Weak in English | Error spotting and vocabulary | Reading comprehension |
From a coding background | Automata Fix and Computer Science | Logical puzzles |
From a commerce or management background | Quantitative ability and your domain module | Data interpretation |
How to cover the syllabus
Weeks 1 and 2: Cover quantitative basics and grammar. Take a short sectional test at the end of each week.
Weeks 3 and 4: Add logical reasoning and data interpretation. Begin your domain module with one topic a day.
Weeks 5 and 6: Take mixed timed tests, review each wrong answer and keep an error log of topics that repeat.
Testkart lets you practise aptitude and reasoning topics through online tests with section-wise analysis, which helps you see which topic to revise next.
