One-third of a mark is deducted for each wrong answer. Each question now has a fifth choice, Option E, for "not attempted". If you leave a question completely blank without marking Option E, it is treated like a wrong answer and attracts the same deduction. Prelims marks are used only for shortlisting.

What This Means for You

  • Always mark something: In prelims, a blank costs as much as a wrong answer. Marking Option E is the only safe way to skip.

  • Merit is decided by three papers: GS I, GS II and Essay carry all 900 mains merit marks. Put most of your writing practice there.

  • Do not ignore the qualifiers: General Hindi and the optional are only qualifying, but failing either ends your attempt regardless of your GS score.

Older pages may still show a 300-mark descriptive optional. That changed, so follow the current notification.

How to Prepare for the BPSC Exam

For Prelims

  • Cover Bihar first: Bihar's history, geography, economy and the state's role in the freedom movement appear in almost every paper. Make a separate Bihar notebook.

  • Use NCERTs as the base: History, geography, polity and science from NCERT books cover the core of the static syllabus.

  • Read current affairs daily: Spend 30 to 40 minutes a day on national, international and Bihar news, and revise monthly notes from the last 12 months.

  • Practise accuracy, not just attempts: With one-third negative marking and the Option E rule, a careful 110 attempts with high accuracy can beat 140 rushed ones.

For Mains

  • Write from day one: Practise answers for GS I and GS II at least three times a week, then get them reviewed.

  • Build an essay bank: Collect facts, schemes and examples on Bihar, society, economy and governance, and write one essay a week.

  • Clear the qualifiers early: Revise Hindi grammar and precis, and pick an optional you studied at graduation so the MCQ paper is low effort.

Use Mock Tests the Right Way

With the prelims on 25 October 2026, take two to three full-length mocks a week in the final weeks and analyse each one the same day. List wrong answers, questions that took too long, and questions you skipped but could have solved.
