Eligibility criteria
You can check the complete rules on the BSF RO RM eligibility page. The essentials are below.
Educational qualification
Both posts accept either of two routes:
Class 12 route: 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from a recognised board, with at least 60% marks in PCM as a regular student.
ITI route: Class 10 pass plus a two-year ITI certificate. For Radio Operator the trades include Radio and Television, Electronics, Computer Operator and Programming Assistant, Data Preparation and Computer Software, General Electronics and Data Entry Operator. For Radio Mechanic the list is wider and also includes Electrician, Fitter, Communication Equipment Maintenance, Computer Hardware, Network Technician and Mechatronics.
Age limit and relaxation
Age is counted as on 23 September 2025. The lower limit is 18 years for everyone.
Category | Upper age (direct entry) | Ex-servicemen relaxation | Upper age (LDCE) |
|---|---|---|---|
General (UR/EWS) | 25 years | 3 years | 40 years |
OBC | 28 years | 6 years | 43 years |
SC/ST | 30 years | 8 years | 45 years |
For ex-servicemen, the relaxation applies after deducting the period of military service from actual age.
Other conditions
LDCE: Serving Constables (GD or Tradesman) need at least three years of regular service, a vigilance clearance, an NOC and medical category SHAPE-1.
Ex-servicemen: Retired from the same trade in the Army, Navy or Air Force, with a break in service of no more than two years and SHAPE-I category.
Compassionate appointment: Only children of deceased or medically boarded-out BSF personnel whose eligibility has been confirmed by the force.
Application fee and how to apply
Category | Fee |
|---|---|
UR, EWS and OBC | Rs. 100 |
SC, ST, women, ex-servicemen, LDCE and compassionate appointment | Nil |
The window for this cycle closed on 23 September 2025, so the steps below show what to expect in the next BSF notification. A candidate who qualifies for both posts could apply separately, with a separate fee, for each.
Register on rectt.bsf.gov.in with your personal details, mobile number and email ID, and note the registration ID and password.
Log in and fill the form: basic details, address, qualification and physical measurements in centimetres.
Upload your photograph, signature and thumb impression (about 50 KB each).
Pay the fee online if it applies to you, then save a printout of the submitted form.
Selection process
Selection runs in three phases, and each phase is qualifying before the next begins.
Phase I: Physical Standard Test (PST) and Physical Efficiency Test (PET). Both are qualifying.
Phase II: Computer based test (CBT) of 200 marks. Candidates for Phase III are shortlisted by CBT merit, up to six times the vacancies, with separate category-wise lists for RO and RM.
Phase III: Document verification, dictation and paragraph reading test (Radio Operator only), then detailed medical examination.
Ex-servicemen and LDCE candidates are exempt from the PST and PET.
Physical standards and efficiency test
Standard | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Height (General, OBC, SC) | 168 cm | 157 cm |
Height (Garhwali, Kumaoni, Gorkha, Dogra, Maratha and listed hill and North-East regions) | 165 cm | 155 cm |
Height (ST including Mizo and Naga) | 162.5 cm | 154 cm |
Chest (General, OBC, SC) | 80 cm unexpanded, 85 cm expanded | Not applicable |
Chest (tribal categories) | 76 cm unexpanded, 81 cm expanded | Not applicable |
Weight | In proportion to height and age as per medical standards | |
PET event | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
Race | 1.6 km in 6 minutes 30 seconds | 800 m in 4 minutes |
Long jump | 11 feet in 3 chances | 9 feet in 3 chances |
High jump | 3.5 feet in 3 chances | 3 feet in 3 chances |
The PET is recorded through RFID, and you must clear all three events. Some pages show the jumps in metres, so check the official notification PDF for exact figures before you train for them.
The medical examination later checks distant vision without correction, colour vision, flat feet, knock-knees and general fitness. Candidates found unfit can appear for a review medical examination.
CBT exam pattern and final merit
The CBT is one common paper for both posts, set at 10+2 level in English and Hindi.
Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Physics | 40 | 80 |
Mathematics | 20 | 40 |
Chemistry | 20 | 40 |
English and General Knowledge | 20 | 40 |
Total (2 hours) | 100 | 200 |
Each correct answer earns 2 marks and each wrong answer costs 0.25 marks. Minimum qualifying marks are 38% for General, OBC and EWS (76 marks), 33% for SC and ST (66 marks), and 20% for compassionate appointment candidates (40 marks).
What this means for you
Physics decides the paper: It carries 80 of 200 marks, so a weak Physics score is hard to recover elsewhere.
A wrong guess is expensive: You lose the 2 marks you could have scored and 0.25 more, a swing of 2.25 marks. Attempt a question only after you have removed at least one option.
Qualifying is not selecting: Clearing 76 marks only keeps you in the race. Shortlisting depends on where you stand among candidates in your category.
Dictation test and final merit
Radio Operator candidates face a 50-mark English dictation test, with deductions for each letter or word mistake, plus a qualifying paragraph reading test. Qualifying marks follow the same 38%, 33% and 20% scheme.
Post | Final merit based on | Maximum marks |
|---|---|---|
HC (Radio Operator) | CBT (200) plus dictation (50) | 250 |
HC (Radio Mechanic) | CBT only | 200 |
For example, an RO candidate who answers 70 questions correctly and 20 wrongly scores 140 minus 5, which is 135 in the CBT. With 40 in dictation, the merit score is 175 out of 250.
Syllabus summary
BSF names the subjects and level but does not publish a topic-wise list. The topics below are a working checklist built from the 10+2 level stated in the notification, so use them as a guide rather than an official list.
Section | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Physics | Mechanics, heat, optics, electricity and magnetism, modern physics, basic electronics | Electricity and mechanics numericals |
Mathematics | Algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus basics, vectors | Algebra and trigonometry |
Chemistry | Physical, organic and inorganic chemistry at Class 11 and 12 level | Periodic table and chemical bonding |
English and General Knowledge | Comprehension, grammar, current affairs, history, geography, general science | Grammar and one current affairs digest |
Admit card
BSF issues a separate e-admit card for each phase, at least three days before the test, and informs candidates by SMS, email and the recruitment website. You need your own login, so keep your registration details safe.
How to download the admit card
Open rectt.bsf.gov.in.
Click the admit card link shown for HC (RO) and HC (RM).
Log in with the credentials you created while registering.
Check the card on screen, download it and take a clear printout.
Details to verify on the card
Check your name, roll or registration number, category, date of birth, photograph and signature, exam date, shift, reporting time and the instructions. If anything is wrong, contact BSF at once. Carry the printed admit card and a valid photo ID, because entry can be refused without them.
Salary and allowances
Component | Details |
|---|---|
Pay level | Level 4, 7th CPC |
Pay scale | Rs. 25,500 to Rs. 81,100 per month |
Allowances | Dearness allowance, ration money, dress allowance, border-area special compensation, transport, LTC, and free accommodation or HRA |
The notification also covers pension under the scheme it names. In-hand salary varies with posting and allowances. Some pages quote a Level 3 scale, so rely on the official notification.
How to prepare
The CBT is a Class 12 level paper under a time limit, so preparation is mostly about speed on Physics and Mathematics numericals.
Weeks 1 to 6: Revise NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and read one current affairs digest each day.
Weeks 7 to 10: Take topic-wise tests, especially in Physics, and keep an error log.
Final phase: Take full-length 2-hour mocks, analyse them the same day and revise the error log. Radio Operator aspirants should add daily English dictation and reading practice.
