CEED Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Age Limit and Attempts

CEED eligibility is simpler than most postgraduate entrance tests. IIT Bombay, which conducts CEED for M.Des and PhD design admissions, sets one academic condition, no age limit and no cap on attempts. For CEED 2027, held on 17 January 2027, the key date is July 2027: final-year students must complete their qualifying examination by then.

This page explains the CEED 2027 eligibility rules from the official brochure, with examples of who can and cannot apply, category certificates and their date rules, the fee for each category, PwD facilities, exam city choice, and the extra conditions that institutes may apply at admission. Registration with the late fee closes at 5:00 pm on 10 November 2026, so check your eligibility now if you have not yet applied.

Educational Qualification

The CEED 2027 brochure says a candidate is eligible if they meet either of two conditions.

Condition 1: a three-year programme after Class 12

You must have completed, or be in the final year of, a degree, diploma or postgraduate programme that lasts at least three years after the 10+2 level. If you are in the final year, you must appear for the final examination by July 2027. Three-year and four-year bachelor's degrees both qualify, as do five-year integrated programmes and master's degrees.

Condition 2: the GD Art diploma

The 5-year Government Diploma in Art, taken after Class 10, is also accepted. You must have passed it, or pass it, by July 2027.

Discipline and marks

CEED does not restrict the field of study. Engineering, architecture, fine arts, design, science, commerce, humanities and management graduates are all eligible. The brochure also sets no minimum percentage or CGPA, so a pass in the qualifying programme is enough for CEED itself. Institutes may set their own minimum marks when you apply for admission, which is covered later on this page.

Who Can and Cannot Apply: Examples

Candidate profile

No, you will not finish by July 2027

Class 12 pass or appearing student

No, consider UCEED for B.Des instead

Two-year programme after Class 12

No, the programme must be at least three years

If your qualification does not fit neatly into these cases, such as a diploma that started after Class 10, write to the CEED office at [email protected] before you pay the fee. If you are still in school or have just finished Class 12, the undergraduate design exam is UCEED; see our UCEED exam guide.

Age Limit and Number of Attempts

The brochure states clearly that there is no age limit to appear for CEED and that a candidate can appear any number of times. This matters for two groups:

  • Working professionals: Engineers, architects and marketing or media professionals who want to move into design can take CEED at any stage of their career.

  • Repeat candidates: If you did not get the institute or programme you wanted, you can take CEED again. Each score is valid for one year from its result date, so plan your attempts around the admission cycle you are targeting.

Category Certificates and Reservation

CEED ranks are prepared by the category you declare in the application. Category also changes your Part A cut-off and, for some groups, your fee. Upload the correct certificate in the format given in the brochure appendices.

Category

Certificate needed

OBC-NCL

OBC-NCL certificate issued on or after 1 April 2026

90%

EWS

SC

50%

ST

50%

PwD

UDID card or medical certificate showing at least 40% disability

50%

Women candidates pay a lower fee, but they are not a separate category for cut-off or ranking purposes. The date rule for OBC-NCL and EWS certificates is strict: a certificate issued before 1 April 2026 does not meet it, so get a fresh one if needed.

PwD Eligibility and Exam Facilities

To claim PwD status, you need a disability of at least 40%, supported by a UDID card or a medical certificate in the brochure format. Candidates with dyslexia must also submit a certificate from their institution's principal stating that the disability is severe and permanent.

  • Scribe: Available for Part A only, not for Part B. The scribe is chosen from a panel provided by the exam centre.

  • Compensatory time: 20 minutes per hour for eligible candidates. Request it in the application, upload your PwD certificate, and submit the request letter in the brochure format.

  • Fee concession: PwD candidates pay the reduced fee of Rs. 2,000 in the regular period.

Exam Cities and Centre Choice

CEED 2027 is held in 30 cities. In the application you choose three cities in order of preference, and requests to change the city or centre after submission are not accepted. The cities listed on the official website are:

Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh/Mohali, Chennai, Coimbatore, Dehradun, Delhi, Ernakulam, Goa, Guwahati, Hubballi (Hubli), Hyderabad, Jabalpur, Jaipur, Kolkata, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Silchar, Solapur, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Visakhapatnam.

Choose cities you can reach comfortably by 9:00 am on a Sunday morning, since the exam starts then and Part B needs you to carry a drawing board and colours.

Institute-Level Eligibility for M.Des and PhD

Meeting CEED eligibility lets you sit the exam. It does not by itself make you eligible for every programme. The brochure states that institutes may have different eligibility criteria, and that a CEED score alone does not guarantee admission.

  • Programme-specific degrees: Some M.Des specialisations may ask for particular backgrounds, such as engineering or architecture for product-focused programmes. Read each institute's admission notice.

  • Minimum marks: Institutes may set a minimum percentage or CGPA in the qualifying degree, often with relaxation for reserved categories.

  • Further selection: Institutes may run a design test, portfolio review or interview after CEED.

  • PhD admissions: Several institutes admit PhD candidates in design through CEED, usually with a master's degree requirement and their own research interview. Check the institute's PhD notice for exact rules.

Use CEED eligibility as the first filter, then shortlist institutes whose own rules you also meet. The institute list and programme names are on the CEED 2027 exam overview.

After You Qualify: Score Validity

The CEED 2027 result is scheduled for 3 March 2027. Score cards can be downloaded from the candidate portal from 10 March 2027 until 31 July 2027, and the score is valid for one year from the result date. Part A marks are shown for every candidate who appears, while Part B marks and ranks are shown only for candidates who clear the Part A cut-off.

Download and save your score card early. Institutes ask for it during their own application process, and the download window closes on 31 July 2027.

Common Mistakes That Cause Problems

  • Old category certificate: An OBC-NCL or EWS certificate dated before 1 April 2026 does not meet the rule.

  • Wrong final-year proof: Final-year candidates should upload the institution certificate in the brochure format rather than an incomplete mark sheet.

  • Name mismatch: A different spelling across documents without name-change proof can delay verification.

  • Choosing exam cities carelessly: You pick three cities in order of preference, and city or centre changes are not accepted after submission.

  • Assuming CEED eligibility means admission eligibility: Always check institute rules before you plan around a specific programme.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

  1. Confirm your qualification: A programme of at least three years after Class 12, or the 5-year GD Art diploma, finished or finishing by July 2027.

  2. Check your category documents: OBC-NCL and EWS certificates dated on or after 1 April 2026; SC, ST or PwD certificates in the brochure format.

  3. Prepare uploads: A recent colour photograph and signature in .jpg, and PDFs of your degree or final-year certificate.

  4. Pick three exam cities: In order of preference, knowing you cannot change them later.

  5. Note the deadlines: Regular fee till 5 November 2026; late fee till 5:00 pm on 10 November 2026.

  6. Read target institutes' rules: Confirm their degree and marks requirements for M.Des or PhD.

Once you know you are eligible, turn to preparation. The CEED exam pattern page explains how Part A and Part B are scored, and you can start timed practice with CEED mock tests on Testkart to see where you stand before the January exam.
