Management Entrance

CMAT Eligibility Criteria: Qualification, Age Limit and Attempts

The CMAT eligibility criteria are among the most open in management entrance testing: a bachelor's degree in any discipline, Indian citizenship and no age limit. The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the test, but the colleges you apply to may add conditions of their own, so it helps to understand both layers.

This page explains who can appear for CMAT, how final-year students are treated, what the bulletin says about age and attempts, and where college-level requirements begin. The rules below come from the CMAT 2026 information bulletin. Confirm them against the bulletin of your own cycle on https://cmat.nta.nic.in/ before you apply.

Educational Qualification

To appear in CMAT, you need a bachelor's degree in any discipline. This means arts, commerce, science, engineering, law, pharmacy and other streams are all accepted for the purpose of taking the test. The degree must be recognised as per AICTE provisions.

No particular subject combination is required. Still, your background affects where you need more preparation, as the table shows.

Final-Year Students

If you are in the last year of your bachelor's degree, you can still register for CMAT. The bulletin allows final-year candidates to apply, provided their result will be declared before admissions begin for the academic session in question. For the 2026 cycle, that session was 2026-27.

A few practical points help final-year applicants:

  • Know your result timeline: check when your university usually declares final-year results and compare it with the admission calendar of your target colleges.

  • Expect proof later: colleges ask for the final degree or provisional certificate at the time of admission. Keep marksheets of all earlier semesters ready.

  • Do not delay registration: being a final-year student does not give you extra time. Apply within the portal's deadline.

Minimum Marks: CMAT Versus College Requirements

This is the point that confuses many students. The CMAT bulletin does not list a minimum percentage in graduation as a condition for taking the exam. Colleges, however, set their own admission criteria, and a minimum graduation percentage is common there.

Level

What applies

CMAT registration (NTA)

Degree in any discipline, final-year allowed, Indian citizen, no age limit

College admission

Each institute sets its own minimum graduation marks, CMAT cut-off and selection rounds

Many institutes ask for around 50 percent marks in graduation for general category candidates and a lower figure for reserved categories. That is an indicative pattern, not a rule from the CMAT bulletin, so read the admission notice of every college on your list. If your percentage is borderline, apply first and check each college's eligibility before paying its application fee.

Age Limit

The 2026 bulletin states that there is no age restriction for CMAT. You can register whether you have just finished graduation or have been working for several years. Some older websites mention a minimum age. Follow the bulletin, because it is the official source.

Age can still matter at the college stage. A few institutes or programmes set age or work-experience conditions for particular courses, so check the programme brochure if you are applying to an executive or specialised programme.

Nationality

The bulletin lists Indian citizenship as a requirement for CMAT. Candidates who are not citizens of India, including some overseas applicants, should write to the NTA helpdesk or contact the admissions office of the institute they are interested in to understand what route, if any, is available for them. Do not rely on third-party summaries for this case.

Number of Attempts

The 2026 bulletin does not specify a limit on the number of attempts. In recent cycles NTA has conducted CMAT once a year, so in practice you can appear again in the next cycle if you want to improve your score. A new attempt means a new registration and a fresh fee.

Before you plan a re-attempt, compare your last percentile with your target colleges' ranges. The CMAT cut-off guide explains how percentile and college tiers relate, and it can help you decide whether a second attempt is worth the extra preparation time.

Reservation in Central Institutes

The bulletin explains the reservation norms for central institutes. State-run or state-aided institutes follow their own state's policy, and private institutes have their own seat matrix.

Category

Reservation in central institutes (2026 bulletin)

Scheduled Caste (SC)

15 percent

Scheduled Tribe (ST)

7.5 percent

Other Backward Classes, non-creamy layer (OBC-NCL)

27 percent

General-EWS

10 percent

PwD/PwBD

5 percent within each of General, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC and ST seats

If you are claiming a category benefit, keep the certificate in the format and validity period that your target institute requires. For PwD/PwBD candidates, the bulletin asks you to carry the relevant certificate to the exam centre when claiming relaxation.

Who May Face Eligibility Problems

These situations deserve extra care before you register:

  • Degree from an unrecognised body: a degree that is not recognised as per AICTE provisions can cause trouble at the admission stage. Verify your university's status early.

  • Result due after admissions begin: final-year students whose result may come late should check the admission schedule of each college and whether it allows provisional admission.

  • Non-Indian citizens: they do not fall under the bulletin's nationality condition and should seek clarification as described above.

  • Mismatched details: a name, date of birth or category that differs between your application and your certificates can create delays at counselling. Match details exactly.

  • Missing the deadline: eligibility counts for nothing if the registration window closes before you apply. Track the schedule on the official portal.

Fee and Documents to Keep Ready

The application fee for the 2026 cycle was Rs. 2,500 for general category male candidates and Rs. 1,250 for general category female candidates. The same Rs. 1,250 fee applied to General-EWS, SC, ST, PwD/PwBD, OBC-NCL and third-gender candidates. Payment-gateway charges and GST are extra, and the fee is non-refundable. The 2027 fee will be announced in the next bulletin.

Keep these ready when you register, and again on exam day:

  • Identity proof: an original, valid photo ID such as Aadhaar, PAN, passport or school ID, as listed in the bulletin.

  • Photograph and signature: in the format specified in the bulletin for the cycle you apply in.

  • Category or PwD certificate: if you are claiming reservation or relaxation.

  • Educational details: your degree or provisional certificate and marksheets for the admission stage.

Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply

  1. Check your degree: is it a bachelor's degree, or will you complete it before admissions begin?

  2. Confirm recognition: does your university meet the AICTE recognition condition?

  3. List target colleges: note each college's minimum graduation marks and application dates.

  4. Read the new bulletin: compare fee, dates and any change in conditions with the points on this page.

  5. Prepare documents: keep scanned copies and certificates in the specified format.

  6. Register on time: apply through the official portal only.
