CSIR JSA Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Typing Requirement

CSIR JSA eligibility rests on three conditions: Indian nationality, 10+2 or an equivalent qualification with computer typing proficiency, and an upper age limit of 28 years with category relaxations. These rules come from the last combined CSIR cycle (Advertisement No. CRRI/02/PC/JSA-JST/2025) and match the 2026 lab advertisements from CSIR-CLRI and CSIR-NEIST.

Age and qualification are counted on a cut-off date stated in each advertisement, usually the last date for applying. In the 2025 combined cycle that date was 21 April 2025. Each lab issues its own advertisement, so always confirm the reference date and any post-specific condition in the one you apply to.

Educational qualification

  • Minimum qualification: 10+2 or Class XII, or an equivalent qualification, from a recognised board.

  • Typing proficiency: Proficiency in computer typing speed and computer use as per DoPT norms, tested through a qualifying typing test.

  • Diploma equivalence: Some lab advertisements treat a three-year diploma obtained after Class 10 as equivalent to Class 12, only for a recognised course from a recognised institute.

  • Equivalence proof: If you claim an equivalent qualification, upload the order or letter showing the authority, number and date. Without it, the application can be rejected.

  • F&A subject condition: Some labs require Accountancy as a subject for Finance and Accounts posts, as CSIR-CLRI did in 2026. Check the post-wise table in your advertisement.

  • Result timing: The qualification must be completed by the reference date in the advertisement.

CSIR JSA age limit and relaxation

The upper age limit for JSA is 28 years as on the closing date. Lab advertisements set the minimum age at 18 years. Relaxations apply as follows.

Category

Upper age relaxation

SC/ST

5 years

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

3 years

PwBD (UR)

10 years

PwBD (OBC)

13 years

PwBD (SC/ST)

15 years

Ex-Servicemen

3 years after deducting military service

Widows, divorced or judicially separated women (not remarried)

Up to 35 years (40 years for SC/ST)

CSIR departmental candidates

No age limit

Category relaxations for SC, ST and OBC apply only against posts reserved for that category. If a lab advertises only unreserved posts, as CSIR-NEIST did for its single JSA post in 2026, those relaxations may not apply. PwBD relaxation needs a disability of 40% or more.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Nationality: Only Indian citizens can apply.

  • Serving employees: Candidates working in central or state government, CSIR, PSUs or autonomous bodies must upload a No Objection Certificate or apply through proper channel.

  • One application per post code: In the 2025 combined cycle, only the latest completed application for a post code was considered, and fees for duplicates were forfeited.

  • Lab and cadre choice: In combined cycles, the choice of lab and JSA stream can be final once submitted.

  • Probation: Selected candidates serve two years on probation.

Who is not eligible

  • Over-age candidates: Anyone above 28 years on the reference date without a valid relaxation.

  • Incomplete qualification: Candidates who have not completed Class 12 or an accepted equivalent by the reference date.

  • Unsupported claims: Applications claiming a category, PwBD status or equivalence without the required certificate.

  • Government employees in other departments seeking age relaxation: Recent lab advertisements give no age relaxation to employees of non-CSIR departments.

Fee and documents

The application fee in the 2025 combined cycle was Rs. 500, non-refundable, for UR, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen were exempt. Keep these ready before applying: a recent photograph, signature, Class 10 certificate for date of birth, Class 12 marksheet, category certificate, PwBD certificate if relevant, and an NOC if you are a serving employee. The CSIR Junior Secretariat Assistant overview explains the application steps.
