ESIC Nursing Officer Exam Pattern Explained
The ESIC Nursing Officer exam pattern in the last verified cycle was a single objective recruitment test followed by document verification and a medical examination. This page explains the structure, the marking scheme and how to plan your time around them.
Here is what is confirmed and what is not. In the 2024 recruitment conducted by UPSC for ESIC (Advertisement No. 52/2024), the test was held on 7 July 2024 and ran for two hours. Sources do not agree on the number of questions or the total marks, so those figures are left out rather than guessed. Check the notice on upsc.gov.in or esic.gov.in when a new cycle opens.
Table of Contents
Pattern at a Glance
Feature | Details (2024 cycle, as reported) |
|---|---|
Stages | Written recruitment test, document verification, medical examination |
Type of questions | Objective multiple-choice |
Duration | 2 hours |
Medium | English |
Marks per question | Equal for every question |
Negative marking | One-third of the marks of a question for each wrong answer |
Number of questions and total marks | Not confirmed in the sources we could verify |
Marking Scheme and Negative Marking
Every question carries equal marks. For each wrong answer, one-third of that question's marks is deducted. Unanswered questions are not penalised.
In practice, this means a wrong guess costs a third of what a correct answer earns. If you can remove two options with confidence, a guess is reasonable. If you cannot, skipping is usually the better choice.
What the Pattern Means for You
Accuracy beats volume: With negative marking, attempting 80 questions at high accuracy can beat attempting every question at average accuracy.
One paper, one chance: There is no separate mains stage in the 2024 structure, so the written test decides your shortlisting.
Reading speed matters: A two-hour English paper rewards quick, careful reading of clinical scenarios.
Nursing subjects carry the paper: Spend most of your preparation on clinical nursing, then basic sciences.
Later Stages
Document verification
Candidates who clear the test are asked to fill a detailed application form and upload documents. Keep your degree or diploma, nursing council registration, category and age proofs ready.
Medical examination
Candidates recommended for appointment must be medically fit as per ESIC norms. This is a qualifying check, not a scored round.
Time Management
First pass (about 60 to 70 minutes): Answer everything you are sure about.
Second pass (about 30 to 40 minutes): Return to questions where you can eliminate options.
Final minutes: Review marked questions and check that no answer is left unattempted by mistake.
These are working targets based on a two-hour paper. Adjust them once you know the question count in the current notice.
Older and Mixed-Up Pattern Pages
Some websites show a computer-based pattern with sections for general knowledge, computers and nursing, or a two-stage prelims and mains format. These belong to other recruitments, such as AIIMS common eligibility tests, and should not be used for ESIC planning. Older pages may still show them, so follow the official notification.
