GATE Chemistry Cut-off: CY Qualifying Marks
The GATE Chemistry cut-off is the minimum mark out of 100 that a candidate must score in the CY paper to qualify and receive a GATE score. It is set separately for each category after every exam. For GATE 2026, organised by IIT Guwahati, the official CY qualifying marks were 25 for general candidates, 22.5 for OBC-NCL and EWS candidates, and 16.6 for SC, ST and PwD candidates.
Two kinds of cut-off matter, and they are often confused. The qualifying cut-off, covered on this page, is announced by the organising institute with the result. Admission cut-offs for IITs, IISc and other institutes are set by each institute for each programme and are usually far higher. Treat every past figure as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above it.

GATE Chemistry Qualifying Cut-off by Year
Year (organising institute) | General | OBC-NCL / EWS | SC / ST / PwD |
|---|---|---|---|
2026 (IIT Guwahati), official | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
2025 (IIT Roorkee), as reported | 25 | 22.5 | 16.6 |
2024 (IISc Bengaluru), as reported | 25.2 | 22.6 | 16.7 |
All figures are marks out of 100. The 2026 row is taken from the official GATE 2026 cut-off page. The 2025 and 2024 rows are as reported when those results were announced; treat them as indicative and confirm against the respective official result notices. The GATE 2027 cut-off will be announced with the result, scheduled for 19 March 2027.
The official GATE 2026 cut-off page also lists 30,775 candidates registered and 22,457 candidates appeared in CY. Official GATE 2026 cut-off marks: https://gate2026.iitg.ac.in/cut-off.html
How the Qualifying Cut-off Is Calculated
The GATE brochure sets the general category qualifying mark as max(25, min(40, μ+σ)), where the Greek letters stand for the mean and standard deviation of marks in the paper. In plain words, the cut-off is the mean plus one standard deviation, but never below 25 and never above 40.
OBC-NCL and EWS: nine-tenths of the general qualifying mark, so 22.5 when the general mark is 25.
SC, ST and PwD: two-thirds of the general qualifying mark, so about 16.6 when the general mark is 25.
When the general CY cut-off sits at 25, as it did in 2026, it means the mean plus one standard deviation fell below 25 and the floor applied.
Qualifying Cut-off Versus Admission Cut-off
Point | Qualifying cut-off | Admission cut-off |
|---|---|---|
Set by | GATE organising institute | Each admitting institute or employer |
Based on | Marks out of 100 | Usually GATE score out of 1000, sometimes with interviews or written tests |
What it gives you | A valid GATE score and rank | A shortlist, interview call or offer |
Changes with | Paper difficulty and score spread | Seats, programme demand and applicant pool |
For Ph.D. and research programmes in chemistry, many institutes shortlist on GATE score and then hold interviews or written tests, so a score just above 25 marks rarely leads to a call at a highly sought-after institute.
What Affects the GATE CY Cut-off
Paper difficulty: A tougher paper lowers the mean, which can keep the cut-off at the floor of 25.
Spread of marks: A wide spread raises the standard deviation, which can lift the mean plus one standard deviation above 25.
Candidate pool: A better-prepared pool raises the mean. The formula depends on how marks are distributed, not on the number of candidates.
Syllabus changes: The revised GATE 2027 CY syllabus may change how difficult students find some sections in the first year.
How to Set Your Target Score
Treat 25 as the floor, not the goal: Qualifying is only the first step. Set your target according to the programmes you want.
Look at your target institute's past shortlists: Many institutes publish shortlisting criteria for research programmes. Use them to set a realistic GATE score goal.
Build a margin in mocks: Aim to score consistently above your target in full-length mocks, because exam-day pressure usually costs a few marks.
Protect accuracy: Negative marking applies only to MCQs, so reckless guessing is the easiest way to lose marks you have earned.
