GATE CS Eligibility Criteria 2027

Who can apply for GATE 2027 and the Computer Science paper: qualifying degrees, year-of-study rules, age and attempt limits, and registration requirements.

Before you plan your GATE CS preparation, it helps to be sure that you are allowed to sit the exam. The GATE CS eligibility criteria for 2027 are broad. Students who are in the third year of an undergraduate degree can apply, and so can graduates from engineering, science, commerce, arts and humanities backgrounds. Even so, the rules differ by degree type, and a few details trip up applicants every year.

This page explains who is eligible for GATE 2027, how the qualifying-degree table works, what is and is not restricted, and what to check before you register. The information follows the official GATE 2027 website of IIT Madras, the organising institute. Always confirm details in the information brochure, because the organisers can update rules.

Basic Eligibility Rule for GATE 2027

According to the official eligibility page, a candidate who is currently studying in the third or higher year of any undergraduate degree programme, or who has completed any government-approved degree programme in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities, is eligible to appear for GATE 2027.

The key word is third year. In earlier cycles the minimum was the final year of a four-year degree. For recent cycles, the rule has been relaxed so that students in the third year of a four-year programme can also appear. This gives younger students an extra attempt before they graduate, and it is useful for those who want a trial run of the paper.

GATE CS Eligibility for Different Degree Holders

The CS paper is taken mostly by engineering students, but the official rules are not limited to them. Here is how the table applies to the most common groups.

B.E. and B.Tech. Students

Students of a four-year engineering programme can apply once they are in the third year. This includes candidates from Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics and other branches. A student from any branch can choose the CS paper in the application, but it is worth checking the requirements of the programmes you want to join, because the papers they accept can differ.

BCA, B.Sc. and Other Three-Year Graduates

A three-year BCA, B.Sc., B.A. or B.Com. degree is covered in the table. Candidates can apply while in the third year or after completing the degree. Eligibility to sit the exam does not mean eligibility for every M.Tech programme. The official note also mentions three-year graduates who want admission to Master's programmes in IITs and IISc, so read that note in the information brochure if this applies to you.

MCA and M.Sc. Students

Candidates in the first year of an MCA or M.Sc. programme, or those who have completed it, are eligible. Many MCA and M.Sc. Computer Science students choose the CS paper to strengthen their profile for research and PhD admissions.

Diploma Holders

A diploma by itself is not listed as a qualifying degree. The official wording requires a degree programme. However, the B.E. and B.Tech. row recognises degrees completed in 3 years after a Diploma in Engineering or Technology, so lateral-entry students can apply once they are in the third year of their degree programme.

Candidates with Foreign Degrees

Candidates studying or graduated outside India must be in the third or higher year, or must have completed a bachelor's degree of at least three years in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, Arts or Humanities.

Professional Society Examinations

Some professional bodies conduct examinations in engineering fields. The official page lists societies such as the Institution of Engineers (India), the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers and the Aeronautical Society of India. A certificate from such a body counts only if the examination is approved by MoE, AICTE, UGC or UPSC as equivalent to B.E., B.Tech. or B.Arch.

Age Limit, Attempts and Minimum Marks

Is There an Age Limit?

No. GATE has no age limit, so a fresher and a working professional follow the same eligibility rule.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed?

There is no cap on attempts. You can sit GATE every year as long as you meet the degree rule. Since a GATE score is valid for three years, you do not need to reappear to keep an old score alive, but many candidates reappear to improve it.

Is a Minimum Percentage Required?

The eligibility criteria for GATE do not set a minimum percentage in your degree. This is different from admission. An institute or a company can set its own academic cut-off for M.Tech seats or job applications, so a candidate who is eligible for the exam may still not meet the requirements of a particular programme.

Nationality and Eligibility

Indian nationals and foreign nationals can both apply. The fee structure lists a separate category for foreign nationals, which confirms their participation. There are no international exam centres, so foreign candidates must choose a centre from the domestic cities offered. Check the exam cities list on the official website for the current options.

GATE Eligibility Is Not the Same as Admission or Job Eligibility

The official site states this clearly: qualifying in GATE does not guarantee admission, scholarship or employment, and any institute applies its own eligibility and selection criteria. Public sector companies that use GATE scores for recruitment set their own educational, age and category rules. Before you commit to the exam for a particular goal, check:

  • M.Tech and PhD programmes: The degree and discipline they accept, the GATE paper they require, and any minimum marks.

  • PSU recruitment: The qualification, discipline, age and reservation rules in each company's own notification.

  • Scholarships and assistantships: The conditions of the admitting institute or funding body.

Registration Requirements for Eligible Candidates

If you meet the criteria, the next step is a correct application. The points below follow the official website.

  • DigiLocker: Registration through a verified DigiLocker account is mandatory for Indian nationals. The organisers advise new candidates not to delete their account after submission, because future communication will go through it.

  • Application portal: Apply online on the GATE Online Application Processing System (GOAPS).

  • Documents: Keep your degree details, photograph, signature and identity documents ready. The official required-documents page lists them.

  • Paper choice: You can choose one or two papers. For CS as the primary paper, the second paper must be from DA, EC, GE, MA, ME, PH, RA or ST.

Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming a diploma is enough: The rule is about degree programmes, so read the table for your exact programme.

  • Confusing exam eligibility with admission eligibility: Being allowed to sit GATE does not mean every institute will admit you.

  • Ignoring the year of study: Some programmes need the third year, others the first year of a master's, and medical degrees are counted in semesters.

  • Using third-party lists: Websites and videos can carry outdated rules. Use the official eligibility page as the final reference.

  • Leaving DigiLocker for the last day: Verification takes time, so create or update your account before you start the form.

A Quick Eligibility Checklist

  1. Identify your degree in the official table.

  2. Check whether your current year of study meets the stated requirement.

  3. Confirm that your degree is government approved or, for professional societies, recognised as equivalent.

  4. Check the admission or job criteria of the institute or company you are targeting.

  5. Create a verified DigiLocker account and keep your documents ready.

  6. Apply within the regular period to avoid the late fee.

Once you know you are eligible, preparation is the next step. Testkart offers resources that help you practise in the actual exam format.
