GPAT, the Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test, is a national-level computer-based exam for B.Pharm graduates and final-year students who want to join an M.Pharm programme. A valid GPAT score is also the route to the M.Pharm scholarship scheme run by the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI). Since 2024, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has conducted the exam under an agreement with PCI.
This guide covers the GPAT exam from start to finish: who can apply, the fee, the 125-question pattern, the syllabus, how results and qualifying percentiles work, previous cut-offs and a preparation plan. NBEMS has not yet announced the GPAT 2027 schedule, so the cycle-specific details below come from the official GPAT 2026 information bulletin and result notice. Use them as a reference until the new bulletin is out.

GPAT Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility rules below are taken from the GPAT 2026 bulletin. Read the full breakdown on our GPAT eligibility criteria page.
Nationality
Only Indian citizens can apply.
Educational Qualification
Graduates: A Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy (four years after 10+2, including lateral entry) or an equivalent degree from a recognised university.
Final-year students: Eligible if their final B.Pharm result is declared before M.Pharm admissions begin for that academic session.
Pre-final-year students: Third-year students can also appear. Their score is meant for M.Pharm admission a year later, once they finish the degree.
Not eligible: Candidates with a B.E. or B.Tech in Pharmaceutical and Fine Chemical Technology, or an equivalent qualification.
Age Limit and Attempts
The GPAT 2026 bulletin does not set an age limit, and it does not mention a cap on the number of attempts. Eligibility stays provisional until documents are verified at the admission stage.
GPAT Application Fee and How to Apply
Applications are accepted only online on the NBEMS website, and each candidate can submit one application.
Category | GPAT 2026 fee |
|---|---|
General, OBC, EWS | Rs. 3,500 |
SC, ST, PwD | Rs. 2,500 |
Payment gateway charges are extra. The fee is not refunded and cannot be carried forward to another cycle.
Steps to Apply
Open the GPAT page on natboard.edu.in and register with a working email ID and mobile number.
Fill in personal, academic and contact details, and choose your test city.
Upload a recent photograph (not older than three months), signature and thumb impression as per the image guidelines.
Pay the fee online and confirm that the payment status shows as successful.
Save a copy of the submitted form for your records.
During the 2026 edit window, name, nationality, email, mobile number, Aadhaar number and test city could not be changed. Enter them carefully the first time. Applications with image problems that are not fixed in the selective edit windows are rejected.
GPAT Admit Card and Exam Day
NBEMS releases admit cards on its website a few days before the exam; for GPAT 2026 they went live on 2 March 2026. Download it, check every detail and carry a colour printout.
Documents: The printed admit card and an original, valid government photo ID such as PAN card, driving licence, voter ID, passport or Aadhaar card with photograph. The name on the ID must match the admit card.
Reporting: In 2026, entry opened at 7:00 AM and closed at 8:30 AM for a 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM exam. The reporting counter closes 30 minutes before the test starts.
Prohibited items: Phones, smartwatches, calculators, stationery, wallets and jewellery are not allowed, and centres do not provide storage.
GPAT Exam Pattern
GPAT is a single-session computer-based test of 125 multiple-choice questions, each with four options. You get 3 hours, and the paper is in English only. A correct answer earns 4 marks, a wrong answer costs 1 mark and an unattempted question scores zero.
Subject group | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
Pharmaceutical Chemistry and allied subjects | 38 | 152 |
Pharmaceutics and allied subjects | 38 | 152 |
Pharmacology and allied subjects | 28 | 112 |
Pharmacognosy and allied subjects | 10 | 40 |
Other B.Pharm subjects | 11 | 44 |
Total | 125 | 500 |
NBEMS calls this distribution an indicative blueprint. The paper is also split into time-bound sections. The 2026 bulletin gave an example of five sections of 25 questions with 36 minutes each, and once a section closes you cannot return to it.
What This Means for You
Two subjects carry most of the paper: Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics together account for 76 of 125 questions.
Guessing has a cost: Four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer, so guess only when you can eliminate two options.
Section timers change pacing: You cannot save time in one section and spend it in another, so practise in 36-minute blocks.
See the full breakdown with time strategy on the GPAT exam pattern page.
GPAT Syllabus Summary
NBEMS does not publish a separate topic-wise GPAT syllabus. The bulletin states that the exam is based on the B.Pharm Course Regulations, 2024 of the Pharmacy Council of India. In practice, that means the whole four-year B.Pharm curriculum, weighted as in the blueprint above.
Subject group | Important areas |
|---|---|
Pharmaceutical Chemistry | Medicinal chemistry, organic and inorganic chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis, instrumental methods |
Pharmaceutics | Physical pharmaceutics, dosage forms, industrial pharmacy, biopharmaceutics and pharmacokinetics, novel drug delivery |
Pharmacology | General pharmacology, drugs acting on body systems, chemotherapy, toxicology, clinical pharmacy |
Pharmacognosy | Crude drugs, phytochemistry, herbal drug technology, standardisation |
Other subjects | Anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology, jurisprudence, pharmacy practice |
The grouping of individual subjects above is a working guide built from the B.Pharm curriculum, not an official NBEMS list.
GPAT Result, Qualifying Criteria and Score Validity
NBEMS publishes the GPAT result on natboard.edu.in as a PDF, and candidates then download individual scorecards with their score and rank. For GPAT 2026, the result came on 7 April 2026. NBEMS does not send scorecards by post.
Who Qualifies
GPAT is a ranking exam, and only a small share of candidates qualify. As reported from the official bulletin and result notices, a candidate must be in the top 10 percent of those who appeared and must also reach the minimum percentile for their category.
Category | Minimum qualifying percentile (as reported) |
|---|---|
General, EWS | 50th percentile |
OBC, SC, ST | 45th percentile |
PwBD (all categories) | 45th percentile |
In GPAT 2026, 5,362 of 53,617 candidates who appeared qualified. In GPAT 2025, 4,714 of 47,142 qualified. Both are close to 10 percent.
Tie-breaking and Validity
For GPAT 2026, ties were reported to be broken first by fewer negative (wrong) responses, then by age (older first), then by Class 12 marks and then by Class 10 marks. A GPAT score is widely reported to be valid for three years from the result. Confirm both rules in the GPAT 2027 bulletin when it is released.
GPAT Cut-off Reference
The cut-off is the lowest score that qualified in each category. These are the reported GPAT 2026 and GPAT 2025 figures, out of 500.
Category | GPAT 2026 cut-off score | GPAT 2025 cut-off score |
|---|---|---|
General (UR) | 213 | 216 |
EWS | 180 | 172 |
OBC-NCL | 177 | 168 |
SC | 142 | 119 |
ST | 116 | 85 |
These figures are indicative and come from the NBEMS result notices as reported for each year. Cut-offs move with difficulty and the number of candidates.
Admission, Counselling and Scholarship After GPAT
NBEMS only conducts the exam and declares the result, which it shares with PCI. It has no role in counselling or scholarship payments.
Admission: M.Pharm seats are filled through state counselling bodies and individual institutes, each with its own schedule, merit rules and reservation.
Scholarship: PCI runs the M.Pharm scholarship for GPAT-qualified students admitted to approved programmes. The amount, duration and conditions are set in PCI notices for each session.
No automatic seat: Qualifying GPAT does not by itself guarantee admission or a scholarship.
Keep your scorecard, B.Pharm marksheets and category certificates ready, because counselling bodies verify them before allotting seats.
How to Prepare for GPAT
GPAT rewards broad recall of the B.Pharm curriculum and accuracy under a section timer. A plan that follows the blueprint tends to work better than reading subjects in semester order.
Stage-wise Plan
Months 1 to 3, high-weight subjects: Cover Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics first, since they make up most of the paper. Make short notes of reactions, structures, formulas and dosage-form facts.
Months 3 to 5, Pharmacology and the rest: Revise drug classes, mechanisms and side effects, then Pharmacognosy and the smaller subjects such as jurisprudence and microbiology.
From month 4, topic tests: Attempt short subject-wise tests after each unit and keep an error log of every wrong or slow question.
Final 6 to 8 weeks, full mocks: Take timed 125-question mocks in 36-minute sections, analyse them the same day and revise from your error log.
Practise with Mock Tests
Before the exam, NBEMS opens a free demo test on its website so candidates can see the computer-based interface. In 2026 it was available from 24 February 2026. Use it once to get familiar with the screen, then build speed with full-length practice papers.
Queries about your application should go only through the NBEMS Communication Web Portal, as NBEMS does not answer GPAT queries sent through other channels.
