IB MTS Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Education, Domicile

IB MTS eligibility rests on four conditions: Indian nationality, a Class 10 (Matriculation) pass, an age between 18 and 25 years with category relaxations, and a domicile certificate of the state you apply for. The Intelligence Bureau, under the Ministry of Home Affairs, applies these rules to its Multi-Tasking Staff (General) recruitment, and each one is checked against the closing date of the application.

This page sets out every condition from the official IB MTS (General) Exam 2025 notification, explains the age relaxation rules with worked examples, and lists the mistakes that most often lead to rejection. The 2025 cycle is complete and no new notification has been released yet, so treat the dates here as the last cycle's reference points and confirm them in the next notification.

Dates That Affect Your Eligibility

Almost every IB MTS condition is tested on a single date: the closing date of the online application. In the 2025 cycle that date was 14 December 2025.

The next cycle will have its own closing date. Arrange your certificates as soon as the notification appears, because the 2025 application window was open for only about three weeks.

Nationality

The notification invites online applications from Indian nationals. Because the post is in an intelligence agency, selected candidates also go through character and antecedent verification before appointment, which is discussed further below.

Educational Qualification

The essential qualification is Matriculation, that is a Class 10 pass, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised board.

  • Result by the closing date: Your Class 10 result must be declared on or before the closing date of the application. Candidates whose result comes later are not eligible for that cycle.

  • No minimum percentage: The notification sets no minimum marks in Class 10. A pass is enough.

  • No stream or subject condition: Any board subject combination is accepted, as long as the board is recognised.

  • Higher qualifications: Class 12, diploma and graduate candidates can apply. Higher qualifications give no extra marks, but you must list them and produce certificates at verification if you have them.

  • Equivalent qualifications: If you passed from an open school or a state board equivalent, keep proof that the board is recognised in case it is questioned at verification.

Age Limit

The age limit in the 2025 cycle was 18 to 25 years as on 14 December 2025, the closing date of the application. In practice, a candidate without relaxation needed a date of birth between 15 December 2000 and 14 December 2007 to fall inside the limit. Check the exact date-of-birth window in each new notification, because the reference date moves with the closing date.

Your date of birth is taken from your Class 10 certificate. The notification asks for the Matriculation certificate at verification to confirm both name and date of birth, so make sure the details you enter in the form match it exactly.

Age Relaxation by Category

Upper age relaxations from the 2025 notification are shown below. The last column shows the resulting maximum age where the notification gives a fixed relaxation.

Worked Examples

  • OBC candidate aged 27: Eligible, because the OBC limit rises to 28 years.

  • UR candidate aged 26: Not eligible unless another relaxation applies, such as PwBD or departmental service.

  • SC PwBD candidate aged 38: Eligible, because the PwBD relaxation for SC/ST takes the limit to 40 years.

  • Central Government employee who is also PwBD: The notification allows either the PwBD or the departmental relaxation, not both together.

Domicile Requirement and SIB Choice

This is the condition that most often surprises first-time applicants. IB MTS vacancies are notified against Subsidiary Intelligence Bureaux (SIBs) across the country, and you can apply only against the SIB of a state for which you hold a domicile certificate.

  • Certificate on the closing date: You must already hold the domicile certificate on the closing date. A certificate issued later does not count.

  • One SIB only: The notification asks candidates to submit only one application. The SIB, once chosen, cannot be changed in any circumstances.

  • Multiple applications: Submitting more than one application may lead to all of them being cancelled.

  • Check vacancies first: Some SIBs had very few or no vacancies in a category in the 2025 cycle. Read the SIB-wise table in the notification before applying, so you know what you are competing for.

Merit is prepared SIB-wise and category-wise, so your realistic target depends on your SIB.

Category Certificates: OBC, EWS, SC/ST, PwBD and Ex-Servicemen

Reservation benefits depend on holding the right certificate in the right format by the closing date.

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

The OBC certificate must be in the Central Government format, not the state government format, and you must not fall in the creamy layer. Your caste must also appear in the central list of OBCs. A state-format certificate is a common reason for losing the OBC benefit at verification.

EWS

EWS candidates need a certificate in the format given in the notification. It must show that the gross annual income of the family is below Rs. 8 lakh and that the family does not own assets above the limits set out in the notification.

SC/ST

A valid caste certificate issued by the competent authority is required. The relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit and the exemption from the examination fee both depend on it.

PwBD

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities get age relaxation and fee exemption. The notification lists the disabilities identified as suitable for the post along with its functional requirements, such as sitting, standing, walking, seeing and hearing. Check this list before applying under PwBD, and keep a disability certificate from the competent authority. PwBD vacancies are allocated centrally rather than SIB-wise.

Ex-Servicemen

Ex-servicemen get age relaxation as per Government orders. ESM vacancies are also allocated centrally, and any that remain unfilled go to non-ESM candidates of the same category. Ex-servicemen who already hold a Central Government civil job on a regular basis may not get the fee exemption, so read the fee rules carefully.

Medical and Character Conditions

The notification does not prescribe physical standards such as height or chest, and there is no physical test. However, final selection is subject to:

  • Character and antecedent verification: Your background is verified before appointment. Giving false information or hiding relevant facts in the form can lead to cancellation of candidature.

  • Medical examination: Selected candidates must be found medically fit.

  • All India transfer liability: Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in India, so be ready for postings outside your home state.

Who Is Not Eligible: Common Mistakes

  • No domicile certificate on the closing date: Applying first and arranging the certificate later does not work.

  • Class 10 result after the closing date: You must have passed by the closing date.

  • Over-age by a few days: Age is counted on the exact reference date. Check your date of birth against it.

  • Applying for two SIBs: Multiple applications risk cancellation of all of them.

  • Wrong certificate format: A state-format OBC certificate or an outdated EWS certificate can cost you the reserved-category benefit.

  • Details that do not match the Class 10 certificate: Name or date-of-birth mismatches cause problems at verification.

Documents Needed to Prove Eligibility

At document verification, candidates bring originals with self-attested copies. Based on the 2025 notification, keep these ready:

How MTS Eligibility Differs from Other IB Posts

Students often confuse the IB MTS rules with those of other IB recruitments, so it helps to know the main differences in outline:

  • Security Assistant/Executive: Also open to Class 10 pass candidates with state domicile, but it carries a separate notification, a different age limit and a local language or dialect component.

  • ACIO Grade II/Executive: Requires a graduation degree and has its own exam and interview.

Always read the notification for the exact post you are applying for rather than relying on a combined summary.

Self-Check Before You Apply

  1. Do I hold a domicile certificate for the state whose SIB I want, dated before the closing date?

  2. Is my Class 10 result declared and are my name and date of birth correct on it?

  3. Am I within the age limit on the reference date, after applying only the relaxations I can prove?

  4. Is my category certificate in the format the notification asks for?

  5. Am I applying only once, for one SIB?
