SSC Exams

IB Security Assistant Eligibility: Age, Education, Domicile

IB Security Assistant eligibility depends on the post you apply for. The Intelligence Bureau (IB), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, recruits Security Assistant/Executive (SA/Exe) and Security Assistant/Motor Transport (SA/MT) separately. Both posts need a Class 10 pass, Indian citizenship, a domicile certificate of the state you apply for and an age between 18 and 27 years. The motor transport post adds a driving licence and one year of driving experience.

This page explains age limits, age relaxation, educational qualification, domicile, local language, driving requirements and the mistakes that lead to rejection. It follows the 2025 recruitment cycle (4,987 vacancies for SA/Exe and 455 for SA/MT). Eligibility is always tied to the notification of the cycle you apply in, so confirm every condition on the official website, mha.gov.in, before filling the form.

Note that the age cut-off date differs between the two posts, because their notifications came out at different times. Your age is counted on the date given in the notification, not on the date you apply or the date of the exam.

Nationality

You must be a citizen of India. Candidates of other nationalities are not eligible for either post. Intelligence work involves sensitive duties, which is why the nationality and domicile checks are applied strictly.

Age Limit and Cut-off Date

The minimum age is 18 years and the maximum is 27 years for unreserved candidates. The upper limit is relaxed for several categories, as shown in the next section.

Some websites quote a different upper limit for SA/Exe. The 27-year limit is the figure reported by most sources for the 2025 notification, but you should read the age clause in the notification itself.

How to check your age quickly

  • Take the cut-off date given in the notification.

  • Subtract your date of birth, as written on your Class 10 certificate.

  • Add the relaxation that applies to you, if any, to the upper limit and check that you do not cross it.

Example: An OBC candidate born on 1 January 1996 would be 29 years old on 17 August 2025. The OBC upper limit is 27 plus 3, which is 30 years, so the candidate is within the limit.

Age Relaxation

The upper age limit is relaxed as per Government of India rules. The table below summarises the relaxation reported for the 2025 cycle.

Category

Relaxation or revised upper age limit

Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST)

5 years

Other Backward Classes (OBC)

3 years

Departmental candidates (Central Government civilian employees with at least 3 years of service)

Up to 40 years

Widows, divorced and judicially separated women who have not remarried (UR)

Up to 35 years

Widows, divorced and judicially separated women who have not remarried (OBC)

Up to 38 years

Widows, divorced and judicially separated women who have not remarried (SC/ST)

Up to 40 years

Ex-servicemen

As per Government rules

Meritorious sportspersons

Up to 5 years

Relaxations are not usually added together. A candidate who qualifies under more than one head normally gets the benefit of the single most favourable category, so check the clause on this in the notification. Reserved-category and departmental claims must be backed by valid certificates, which are verified at the document stage.

Educational Qualification

The essential qualification for both posts is Matriculation, that is, a Class 10 pass from a recognised Board of Education. There is no requirement of higher secondary or graduation, which makes the exam open to a very wide group of candidates, including graduates who meet the other conditions.

For Security Assistant/Executive

  • Essential: Class 10 pass from a recognised board.

  • Desirable: Field experience in intelligence work. This is a preference and not a mandatory condition.

For Security Assistant/Motor Transport

  • Essential: Class 10 pass from a recognised board.

  • Essential: A valid driving licence for a motor car (LMV) issued by the competent authority.

  • Essential: Knowledge of motor mechanism, meaning the ability to identify and remove minor defects in a vehicle.

  • Essential: At least one year of experience in driving a motor car, counted after obtaining a valid driving licence.

Candidates appearing in the Class 10 exam and waiting for the result should not assume they can apply. The pass certificate or marksheet is expected by the cut-off date mentioned in the notification, so check the clause on result-awaited candidates before applying.

Domicile Requirement

You must hold a domicile certificate of the state or union territory for which you are applying. Vacancies are announced circle-wise, for Subsidiary Intelligence Bureaus (SIBs) located in different states and union territories, so your application is tied to one location.

  • Choose the SIB of the state where you hold domicile. You cannot apply for a state where you do not hold a domicile certificate.

  • The certificate must be issued by the competent authority of that state or union territory.

  • Keep the certificate ready in the required format. A residence proof such as a ration card or electricity bill is not a substitute.

The post carries an all-India transfer liability, which means that you may be posted outside your home state after selection.

Local Language Requirement (SA/Exe)

For Security Assistant/Executive, you must know at least one local language or dialect of the region of the SIB you applied to. This is tested in Tier II, which is a translation test of a passage of about 500 words, from the local language to English and from English to the local language. The qualifying mark is 20 out of 50.

  • The languages differ for each SIB, and the notification lists them.

  • Reading and writing ability matters, not just spoken fluency, because the test is written.

  • Candidates who studied the language in school usually find the test easier, but regular practice is still needed.

Additional Conditions for Motor Transport

The SA/MT post is a driving post, so the conditions are stricter and more practical.

Condition

What it means for you

Valid LMV licence

The licence must be for a light motor vehicle (motor car) and must be valid. Applications without a licence are not considered.

One year of driving experience

Counted from the date you got the licence. The experience should be of driving a motor car.

Experience certificate

Issued by a Central, State or semi-Government department, organisation, institute, corporation, PSU, autonomous body or registered firm.

Motor mechanism knowledge

Basic ability to identify and remove minor defects in a vehicle.

Motorcycle licence

A valid motorcycle licence is a preference, not a requirement.

If you drive your own car, a self-declaration may not be enough. Arrange an experience certificate from a qualifying employer well before the last date, because it takes time.

Number of Attempts

The notification does not state a maximum number of attempts. You can apply in every cycle as long as you remain within the age limit and meet the other conditions. Since recruitment cycles are not annual, it is wise to prepare seriously for the cycle in front of you.

Documents to Keep Ready

  • Class 10 certificate or marksheet, which also serves as date of birth proof.

  • Domicile certificate of the state you apply for.

  • Caste or category certificate in the prescribed format, for SC, ST, OBC and EWS candidates.

  • Photo identity proof.

  • Recent passport-size photograph and signature in the specified size and format, for the online form.

  • For SA/MT: valid driving licence and driving experience certificate.

  • For departmental, ex-servicemen, sportsperson and women claimants: the supporting document for the relaxation.

Common Reasons for Rejection

  • Wrong date of birth proof: The date in the application does not match the Class 10 certificate.

  • Domicile mismatch: Applying to a state different from the domicile certificate.

  • Old or invalid category certificate: Using an OBC certificate that is not in the central list format, or one that is not valid for the date required.

  • Driving experience counted wrongly: For SA/MT, counting experience from before the licence was issued.

  • Incorrect information: Wrong details in the form can lead to cancellation of the candidature at any stage.

  • Photograph or signature issues: Uploading files that do not meet the size or format requirement.

How Eligibility Connects to the Selection Process

Meeting eligibility only gets you to the exam. SA/Exe candidates go through a 100-mark online test, a qualifying translation test and an interview. SA/MT candidates go through the online test and then a driving and motor mechanism test cum interview. Final selection depends on document verification and a medical examination as well. You can read the full structure on the IB Security Assistant exam pattern page on Testkart.

Medical Fitness and Character Verification

Meeting the written eligibility is not the end of the checks. Candidates who reach the final stage go through a medical examination and verification of documents. As the Intelligence Bureau deals with national security, verification of character and antecedents is also part of the process. The notification may specify medical standards, so read that section before you invest time in preparation, especially for the driving post, where good vision and fitness are naturally important.

Which Post Should You Choose?

Your situation

Better fit

Class 10 pass, no driving licence, comfortable in a regional language

Security Assistant/Executive

Holds an LMV licence and has at least one year of documented driving experience

Security Assistant/Motor Transport

Meets both sets of conditions

Either; compare vacancies in your state and the stages you are more comfortable with

The two posts carry the same pay level, so the choice mostly depends on your skills. SA/Exe has far more vacancies. SA/MT has fewer vacancies, but only licence holders with driving experience can apply, so the field is narrower.

Who Should Not Apply

  • Candidates who will cross the upper age limit on the cut-off date, even after relaxation.

  • Candidates without a domicile certificate of the state they want to apply for.

  • For SA/MT, anyone who does not yet have one full year of driving experience after getting the licence.

  • Candidates who cannot read and write at least one local language of the chosen SIB, if applying for SA/Exe.

Practical Tips Before You Apply

  • Read the whole notification once, including the clauses on relaxation and certificates.

  • Decide the state first, since the domicile and the language test both depend on it.

  • Apply well before the last date, because the portal gets slow near the deadline.

  • Start timed practice early. You can attempt IB Security Assistant mock tests and test series on Testkart to learn the Tier I format while your documents are being arranged.
