IBPS RRB Exam Pattern 2026: Prelims and Mains Pattern for Clerk.
The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) conducts the Common Recruitment Process for Regional Rural Banks (CRP RRBs) every year to fill posts of Office Assistant (Multipurpose), Officer Scale I, Officer Scale II, and Officer Scale III. If you are preparing for CRP RRBs-XV in 2026, the first thing to get right is the exam pattern because Office Assistant (commonly called RRB Clerk) and Officer Scale I (RRB PO) follow different timing rules in Mains, even though both have 200 questions.

This guide breaks down the IBPS RRB exam pattern 2026 for every post Office Assistant, Officer Scale I, and Officer Scale II/III along with negative marking, how final merit is calculated, and the 2026 exam dates.

IBPS RRB Office Assistant (Clerk) Exam Pattern 2026

Prelims Pattern

The Office Assistant Prelims is a qualifying test. Marks scored here are not added to the final merit list you only need to clear the sectional and overall cut-offs to move to Mains.

Mains Pattern

Candidates who clear Prelims and are shortlisted appear for the Mains exam, which decides the final merit for this post.

The Office Assistant Mains runs on a composite duration of 120 minutes, with no sectional timing. You can allocate your own time across sections as long as the full paper is submitted within two hours. This is a key difference from the Officer Scale I Mains, which is fully sectional (see below).

Since there is no interview for Office Assistant, your Mains score alone determines your final rank and allotment to a Regional Rural Bank.

Prelims Pattern

Officer Scale I Prelims uses the same 80-question, 80-mark structure and sectional split as Office Assistant Prelims, and is equally qualifying in nature.

Notice that General Awareness and Computer Knowledge together give you 60 marks in just 30 minutes combined a section pair worth prioritising early in your revision, since it rewards preparation more than speed.

Officer Scale I candidates who clear Mains move to a Common Interview, which is the final stage before merit is prepared.

IBPS RRB Officer Scale II and III Exam Pattern 2026

There is no Prelims for Officer Scale II or Scale III. Candidates take one single online objective exam of 200 questions and 200 marks, in a composite 2-hour duration, covering:

  • Reasoning

  • Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation

  • General/Financial Awareness

  • English or Hindi Language

  • Computer Knowledge

Specialist Officer Scale II posts (IT, Law, Chartered Accountant, Treasury Manager, Marketing, and Agriculture) include a Professional Knowledge section relevant to that specialisation in place of, or alongside, some general sections. The exact split for the specialist streams is confirmed in the official CRP RRBs-XV notification, so cross-check the post you're applying for before finalising your study plan.

Shortlisted candidates from the single exam are called for the Common Interview, coordinated with the help of NABARD and IBPS.

Negative Marking and Sectional Cut-off Rules

These rules apply uniformly across every stage and every post in IBPS RRB:

  • Negative marking: 0.25 marks (one-fourth) deducted for each wrong answer. There is no penalty for unattempted questions.

  • Sectional cut-off: You must score at or above the minimum marks fixed for each section, not just the overall total, to be considered for the next stage.

  • Language choice: In the Mains, you attempt either the English Language or the Hindi Language section — not both. Decide which one you'll prepare for early, since switching close to the exam wastes revision time.

  • Local language requirement: Office Assistant candidates must know the official language of the state or union territory where their preferred Regional Rural Bank is located; this is verified before the interview stage for Officer posts and can affect eligibility for Office Assistant selection.

How Final Merit Is Calculated

This is where most confusion happens, because Prelims marks feel important but are not carried forward at all.

Post

What Counts Toward Final Merit

Office Assistant

Mains marks only (Prelims is qualifying)

Officer Scale I

80% weightage to Mains + 20% weightage to Interview (Interview is out of 100 marks)

Officer Scale II & III

Single Exam marks + Interview marks combined, per IBPS's prescribed formula

In simple terms: Prelims gets you a seat at the Mains table, nothing more. For Office Assistant, your Mains paper is the entire game. For Officer Scale I, II, and III, the interview still carries real weight, so written-exam preparation and interview readiness both matter.

Merit lists are prepared separately for each participating Regional Rural Bank, not as one national list — so your final rank can vary depending on the RRBs you've opted for.

What the Exam Pattern Means for Your Preparation Strategy

For students preparing for Office Assistant:

  • Since Mains has no sectional timing, practise moving between sections based on your strengths attempt your strongest sections first to bank marks early.

  • Because Mains alone decides your merit, treat every Mains-level mock test as seriously as the real exam.

  • Use full-length, sectional-timed mocks for Prelims practice, since that stage is strictly timed per section.

For students preparing for Officer Scale I, II, or III:

  • Sectional timing in Scale I Mains means you cannot "borrow" time from General Awareness or Computer Knowledge to rescue a slow Reasoning or Quant attempt build section-specific speed separately.

  • Since the interview carries 20% weightage for Scale I (and matters for Scale II/III too), don't stop preparation at the written exam; begin interview readiness banking awareness, your specialisation, and communication practice well before Mains results are out.

  • If you're targeting a Specialist Officer Scale II post, confirm the exact Professional Knowledge weightage for your stream from the official notification before building your study plan.
