ICAR NET Eligibility: Qualification, Age Limit and Conditions
ICAR NET eligibility is straightforward compared with most government exams: you need a relevant Master's degree, you must be at least 21 years old on the date the notification fixes, and there is no upper age limit or cap on attempts. The details that trip candidates up are the discipline mapping, the degree completion date and the category certificate.
The National Eligibility Test is conducted by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB). This page explains each condition, how to check whether your degree fits your chosen discipline, what documents matter and which mistakes lead to rejection. The rules below follow the ASRB combined notification of 2021, which sets out the NET conditions. Dates and small conditions change each cycle, so confirm them in the current notification before you apply.

Educational qualification
To appear in NET you need a Master's degree, or an equivalent qualification, in the discipline and specialisation you choose. The degree must come from an Indian university or from a foreign university that the Government of India recognises.
Degree completion date
Each notification fixes a date by which your degree must be complete. In the 2021 cycle that date fell shortly before the exam, which means candidates whose results were due after the application date could still be considered if they had completed the degree by then. Because this date changes each year, read it in the current notification rather than relying on an earlier cycle. If your final result is still awaited, check exactly what the notification says about it before paying the fee.
Percentage or CGPA
The notification we reviewed did not set a minimum percentage for NET. If this changes, the notification will say so. Keep your final marksheet and degree certificate ready for upload and for later verification.
Choosing the right discipline
NET is held in about 60 disciplines, and the notification lists the approved Master's degrees against each one in an annexure. Your discipline choice decides your question paper, your syllabus and the qualifying standard applied to your result, so it is the most important step in the form.
Check | What to do |
|---|---|
Find your degree | Look for your exact Master's degree in the annexure of the notification |
Match the specialisation | Confirm that your specialisation sits under the discipline you plan to pick |
Read the note on related degrees | Some degrees may be accepted for more than one discipline. Follow the notification, not hearsay |
Decide with your career in mind | Choose the discipline in which universities are likely to recruit you |
Once the application is submitted, changes may not be allowed or may need a correction window, so decide before you pay.
Age limit
You must be at least 21 years old on the reference date given in the notification. For example, the 2021 notification used 1 January 2021 as the date. There is no maximum age, so there is no age relaxation for NET itself.
Exam | Minimum age | Upper age limit |
|---|---|---|
NET | 21 years | None |
ARS, SMS and STO posts | As notified | Fixed in the notification, with category relaxation |
The upper age limits and relaxations that appear in many articles belong to the recruitment posts, not to NET. Do not apply them to NET.
Nationality
You may apply if you are:
A citizen of India: This is the main category.
A subject of Nepal or Bhutan: Allowed under the notification conditions.
A Tibetan refugee: Someone who came to India before 1 January 1962 intending to settle permanently.
A person of Indian origin: Persons who migrated from certain listed countries to settle in India may qualify. The notification lists the countries and conditions, and you may be asked for an eligibility certificate.
If you fall in anything other than the first category, read the nationality clause fully, because it often asks for a certificate that takes time to obtain.
Number of attempts
The notification places no restriction on the number of attempts. You can sit NET every cycle until you qualify, and you can attempt it again after qualifying if you want a better score, though the certificate remains the same pass or fail record. You must meet all eligibility conditions in each cycle.
Category and EWS conditions
Your category affects the fee and the qualifying marks, so keep the certificate ready in the right format.
EWS: The 2021 notification asked EWS candidates to upload a certificate in the prescribed format, dated before the application closing date. A certificate that does not meet this was not considered for the claim. EWS candidates paid the reduced fee but faced the unreserved qualifying marks.
OBC: The OBC claim needs a valid central-list certificate in the format the notification gives.
SC, ST and PwBD: A valid certificate is needed for the fee concession and the lower qualifying marks.
If you claim a category you cannot document, the claim can be rejected, and you would lose the fee concession. Use only certificates issued by competent authorities.
Who may not be eligible
Degree in an unlisted subject: If your Master's degree does not map to any NET discipline, you cannot apply for that discipline.
Degree completed after the cut-off date: If you cannot meet the completion date in the notification, your application can be rejected.
Below the minimum age: Candidates younger than 21 on the reference date are not eligible.
Degrees from unrecognised institutions: Foreign degrees need recognition by the Government of India.
Incorrect or false details: Wrong information can lead to disqualification even after the exam.
Fee and documents
The fee depends on category. In the 2021 notification it was Rs. 1,000 for unreserved, Rs. 500 for EWS and OBC, and Rs. 250 for SC, ST, PwBD and women, and it was not refundable. Treat these figures as indicative and confirm them in the current notification. Keep these documents ready:
Identity and photograph: A recent photograph and signature in the prescribed format.
Degree documents: Master's marksheet, provisional or final certificate and any recognition proof for foreign degrees.
Category certificate: EWS, OBC, SC, ST or PwBD, as relevant.
NET and the ARS, SMS and STO posts
ASRB announces NET together with the recruitment examinations for Agricultural Research Service, Subject Matter Specialist and Senior Technical Officer posts. These posts have their own age limits, qualifications and fees. Meeting NET eligibility does not mean you meet the requirements of a recruitment post, so read each section of the notification separately if you plan to apply for more than one.
