IIT JAM 2027 Eligibility Criteria: Degree, Marks, Age and Nationality
IIT JAM 2027 eligibility is broad: anyone with a bachelor's degree, or in the final year of the qualifying degree in 2027, can sit the exam, with no age limit. IIT Kharagpur, which is organising JAM 2027, applies the real filter at the admission stage through each programme's Minimum Educational Qualifications (MEQs).
This page separates the two levels clearly: who can appear for the exam on 14 February 2027, and who can take up a seat after qualifying. It covers the qualifying degree, the old 55% rule that many pages still quote, nationality, subject requirements by paper and the common reasons candidates lose a seat they have earned.

Educational Qualification
Who can appear
You can appear for JAM 2027 if you have completed an undergraduate degree, or if you are appearing for the final examination of your qualifying degree in 2027. Final-year students are explicitly eligible for admission through JAM 2027.
Completion deadline
The undergraduate programme must be completed before the date of admission. You must submit proof of passing the qualifying degree, along with the MEQs set by the admitting institute, within the timeline that institute gives. A pending backlog or a delayed result at that point can cost you the seat.
Minimum marks: what changed
Up to JAM 2021, General, EWS and OBC-NCL candidates needed 55% aggregate (or 5.5 CGPA), and SC, ST and PwD candidates needed 50%, to be admitted. That common requirement was dropped from JAM 2022 onwards, and the JAM 2027 brochure does not set any common aggregate percentage. Older pages may still show the 55% and 50% rule, so follow the official brochure.
Some programmes still set their own marks requirement. For example, the brochure lists a minimum of 60% in the bachelor's degree for the Integrated Ph.D. in Sustainable Energy Engineering at IIT Kanpur and the Joint M.Sc.-Ph.D. in Nuclear Medicine at IIT Kharagpur. Check the MEQ of every programme you plan to choose.
Minimum Educational Qualifications by Paper
MEQs are programme-specific, so the table below shows typical patterns from Annexure II of the brochure, not a complete list.
Test paper | Typical MEQ for the matching programmes |
|---|---|
Biotechnology (BT) | Bachelor's degree in any branch at many institutes; some programmes ask for a science or STEM degree |
Chemistry (CY) | Chemistry for three years or six semesters, sometimes with Mathematics for one year |
Economics (EN) | Three-year bachelor's degree after 10+2 (B.A., B.Sc., B.Com. and similar), often with Mathematics at some level |
Geology (GG) | Geology for three years, sometimes with two of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry or Biology |
Mathematics (MA) | Mathematics for at least two years or four semesters in most programmes |
Mathematical Statistics (MS) | Usually Mathematics or Statistics as a subject at degree level; check each programme |
Physics (PH) | Usually Physics with Mathematics at degree level; check each programme |
The MS and PH rows summarise typical requirements and are indicative; confirm the exact MEQ in Annexure II of the JAM 2027 information brochure before you list a programme.
