ISC Class 12 Eligibility 2027
Before you plan for the ISC Class 12 board examination, it helps to know who is allowed to appear. Like the ICSE, the ISC is a school-based board examination, so eligibility is not about an entrance test or a qualifying score. It depends on being a regular student of a CISCE-affiliated school, meeting the attendance requirement and being promoted from Class 11. The points below follow the CISCE regulations for the ISC examination; verify the latest wording for your exam year on cisce.org.

Who Can Appear in ISC Class 12?
Only students who have studied the two-year ISC course in a CISCE-affiliated school can appear. Your school registers you with the council and submits your entry for the examination, so you do not apply to the board on your own. If you are joining from another board in Class 11, talk to the school early about admission, registration and subject availability, because the council sets the timelines and rules.
Age Limit
The regulations do not prescribe any age limit for the ISC examination. Your admission is governed by your school's rules, but there is no minimum or maximum age for appearing in the board examination itself.
Private Candidates
Private candidates are not permitted to appear in the ISC examination. You must be registered through an affiliated school as a regular student. If you are studying independently, contact CISCE-affiliated schools in your area to understand admission options.
Attendance Requirement
Attendance is one of the most important conditions.
Minimum attendance: 75 per cent of working days during the two-year course.
Computation date: The last date for computing attendance at schools is 31 January of each year.
Condonation between 60 and 75 per cent: The council may condone the shortfall at its discretion in genuine cases.
Below 60 per cent: Condonation is considered only in limited cases, such as psychological or medical grounds, authorised participation in sports or arts, or other unforeseen and special circumstances.
Keep medical or other supporting documents safe and tell your school early if you expect a shortfall. Schools handle the request on your behalf.
Consider an illustration. If your school has around 200 working days in a year, 75 per cent attendance means about 150 days present. The actual figure depends on your school's calendar, so use this only as a rough guide.
Promotion from Class 11 to Class 12
To be promoted to Class 12, a candidate needs at least 35 per cent marks in five subjects, including English or Modern English, on the cumulative average, along with a minimum attendance of 75 per cent of working days. Because Class 12 builds on Class 11, weak Class 11 results are a signal to strengthen the basics early.
Subject Selection Rules
Compulsory subject: English or Modern English, with a Language paper and a Literature paper.
Electives: Four or five elective subjects, with a maximum of six subjects in total.
Not allowed together: English with Modern English; Physics with Engineering Science; Geometrical and Mechanical Drawing with Building Drawing; Mathematics with Applied Mathematics; Robotics with Artificial Intelligence.
Continuity: You cannot opt for a subject in Class 12 that you did not study in Class 11.
Change deadline: Subject changes are not permitted after 15 September of the year in which you were registered in Class 11.
Practical papers: If a subject has a practical examination, you must take it, otherwise the subject is considered incomplete.
Choose your combination with your future plans in mind. Students aiming for science-based courses, commerce paths or humanities should discuss subject requirements with teachers and check what the colleges or entrance exams they are interested in require.
Pass Conditions for the Certificate
Being eligible to appear is different from qualifying. The pass mark is 35 per cent in each subject. To receive the pass certificate, a candidate must reach the pass standard in five or six subjects, which must include English or Modern English, along with a pass grade in SUPW.
What If You Do Not Qualify?
Candidates who do not qualify can reappear once in the following year, without attending school, and not after that. They must reappear in all the subjects they originally took. Speak to your school about the entry process.
Improvement Examination
Candidates who took the main examination, other than those who were absent, can apply for an improvement examination in a maximum of two subjects. You must appear in the theory paper, and practical marks are carried forward unless you were absent earlier. Registration takes place in June or July, and the higher of the two marks is considered final. Results are typically declared about a month after the last examination.
Steps to Stay Eligible
Confirm registration: Ask your school to confirm your Class 11 registration and subjects.
Check the subject combination: Verify that it follows the rules listed above.
Track attendance: Review your record regularly and definitely before 31 January.
Complete practical and project work: Submit files and projects on time.
Meet the Class 11 promotion criteria: Aim well above 35 per cent in every subject.
Verify entry details: Schools confirm entries online, so check your name, subjects and details for errors in time.
