JEE Advanced AAT Exam Pattern 2027: Paper Rules and Result

The JEE Advanced AAT exam pattern is simple in structure: one paper of three hours, taken only by candidates who have qualified in JEE (Advanced). The Architecture Aptitude Test decides whether you can take a B.Arch seat at an IIT, while your JEE (Advanced) rank decides which seat. IIT Roorkee conducted the 2026 cycle, and its brochure is the latest official source as of October 2026.

This page explains the paper rules that are officially published, what is not published, how the pass result works and how to use the three hours. Many pages show a detailed marks table for AAT; the official brochure does not, and this page explains why that matters for your preparation.

What the Brochure Does Not Publish

The official brochure does not state the number of questions, total marks, marks per section, question types or any negative marking rule for AAT. It gives only the syllabus areas, the duration and the result rule.

Some websites show a full marks table or a mathematics, aptitude and drawing split. Older pages may still show that kind of structure, so follow the official brochure. Treat any marks breakdown you see as unofficial unless it appears in the brochure itself.

Common Misreadings of the AAT Pattern

  • AAT marks add to your JEE (Advanced) rank: They do not. Seats are allotted solely on JEE (Advanced) category-wise rank, and AAT only decides PASS or fail.

  • AAT has its own merit list: The brochure states there is no separate ranking in AAT.

  • Anyone can sit AAT: Only candidates who qualified in JEE (Advanced) of the same year are eligible.

  • AAT is held in many cities: In 2026 it was held at seven IIT centres only, so plan travel early if you live far from one.

  • A separate admit card will come: No separate AAT admit card is issued; the JEE (Advanced) admit card is used.

Marking and Qualifying

  • Cut-off decided after the test: The Joint Implementation Committee of JEE (Advanced) decides the cut-off marks for passing AAT.

  • Pass or fail: Candidates who score above the cut-off are declared PASS. No AAT rank is published.

  • Seat allotment: Seats are allotted solely on category-wise All India Rank in JEE (Advanced), and B.Arch is offered only to candidates declared PASS.

  • Results: In 2026, AAT results were declared on 7 June 2026 at 17:00 IST.

Where JEE (Advanced) Fits

Your B.Arch seat depends on your JEE (Advanced) rank, so its pattern matters as much as the AAT paper.

Paper

Timing (17 May 2026)

Notes

Paper 1

09:00 to 12:00 IST

Computer-based; Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics

Paper 2

14:30 to 17:30 IST

Computer-based; Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics; appearing in both papers is compulsory

Subject marks are the sum of the matching parts of both papers, and the aggregate is the total of all three subjects. To be included in the common rank list in 2026, candidates needed at least 10% in each subject and 35% in aggregate, with lower minimums for other categories. Only qualified candidates can register for AAT.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Stamina over speed tricks: Three hours of continuous drawing is tiring. Practise full-length sessions so your linework stays steady to the end.

  • Cover every area: With no published weightage, a weak area can pull you below the cut-off. Do not skip architectural awareness or composition.

  • Rank still decides the seat: Passing AAT does not improve your JEE (Advanced) rank, so keep JEE (Advanced) preparation as the main priority until May.

  • Tight timeline: In 2026 there were three days between the JEE (Advanced) result and AAT, so your AAT skills must be ready before the result.

How the Final B.Arch Seat Is Decided

There is no combined merit score for B.Arch at IITs. AAT acts as a gate, and JEE (Advanced) rank does all the ranking. A simple example shows how this works.

Candidate

JEE (Advanced) category rank

AAT result

Outcome in JoSAA

Candidate A

Better (higher) rank

Fail

Cannot be offered B.Arch, whatever the rank

Candidate B

Lower rank than A

PASS

Considered for B.Arch on rank, if seats remain at that rank

Candidate C

Rank similar to B

Did not register for AAT

Cannot be offered B.Arch

The example is illustrative only. It shows that a strong JEE (Advanced) rank cannot make up for a failed or missed AAT, and a pass in AAT cannot lift a weak rank.

Provisions for PwD Candidates

PwD candidates with at least 40% impairment are eligible for one hour of compensatory time. Candidates with less than 40% disability who have difficulty in writing, as covered by the RPwD Act, 2016, are also eligible for one hour of compensatory time. The required form must be filled during AAT registration to use compensatory time or a scribe.

Exam-Day Strategy

The brochure only says to bring your own drawing and colouring aids. The kit below is a practical suggestion, not an official list.

  • Pencils and erasers: A few grades of pencil for outlines and shading, plus a clean eraser and sharpener.

  • Measuring tools: A scale, set squares and a compass for geometrical drawing.

  • Colours: The colour pencils or crayons you practised with, so there are no surprises on the day.

  • Documents: Printed JEE (Advanced) admit card and an original photo ID.

Planning the three hours

Since the brochure does not publish the number of tasks, there is no official time split. The plan below is a practical way to divide the paper; adjust it once you see the actual tasks.

Part of the paper

Suggested share of time

Why

Reading all tasks

About 10 minutes

Spot the tasks you can finish fastest and plan the order

Detailed drawing tasks

The largest share

Freehand and geometrical drawing need the most care

Composition and colour

A fixed block

Colouring takes longer than most students expect

Short awareness or perception tasks

A smaller block

Quick answers once you know the content

Final check

About 10 minutes

Finish labels, clean lines and complete anything left
