JKSSB SI Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification, Domicile and Physical Standards
JKSSB SI eligibility rules decide who can be selected as Sub Inspector in J&K Police (Home Department). The Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Board (JKSSB) set these conditions in Advertisement Notification No. 02 of 2024, dated 22 November 2024, for 669 posts. Two dates matter: age is counted as on 1 January 2024, and qualification and domicile had to be in place by the last date of application, 2 January 2025.
This page explains each condition in plain terms: degree, age limit, ex-servicemen rules, domicile, physical standards and medical fitness. Eligibility is checked again at document verification, so a candidate who clears the written test can still be rejected if a condition is not met. Read it carefully even if you have already applied.

Educational Qualification
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a university or institution recognised by the Government of India, the UGC or the relevant regulatory body. Arts, science, commerce, engineering and other streams are all accepted, and there is no minimum percentage.
Result by the cut-off date: The degree had to be complete by 2 January 2025. A candidate whose final-year result came after that date does not meet the condition.
Recognition matters: Degrees from unrecognised institutions or programmes not approved by the regulator can be rejected at document verification.
Distance and open learning: A degree through distance mode is generally accepted only if the university and programme were recognised for that mode in the year of study. Check this before relying on it.
JKSSB SI Age Limit
Age is counted as on 1 January 2024. This is almost a year before the notification, so some candidates who were 28 by the time they applied still fell within the limit.
Category | Minimum age | Maximum age |
|---|---|---|
Open Merit (OM) | 18 | 28 |
SC, ST-1, ST-2 | 18 | 28 |
OBC, RBA, ALC/IB, EWS | 18 | 28 |
Government or contractual employees | 18 | 28 |
In-service police personnel | 18 | 30 |
Date of birth window
Candidate type | Born not before | Born not after |
|---|---|---|
All categories (upper limit 28) | 1 January 1996 | 1 January 2006 |
In-service police personnel (upper limit 30) | 1 January 1994 | 1 January 2006 |
The date-of-birth windows are as summarised from the notification. Check the exact boundary dates in the official advertisement if your birthday falls close to either end.
Why reserved categories get no extra years
Many J&K posts allow reserved categories a higher upper age limit. For this SI recruitment, the notified upper limit is the same 28 years for OM and every reserved category. Only in-service police personnel and ex-servicemen have a different rule. Do not assume a category relaxation that the notification does not give.
Ex-servicemen and In-service Candidates
Ex-servicemen
An ex-serviceman deducts the period of military service from his actual age. If the resulting age is not more than 3 years above the upper age limit, he is treated as meeting the age condition. He must also not be born after 1 January 2006.
Example: An ex-serviceman aged 34 on 1 January 2024 with 7 years of service has an effective age of 27. That is within 28, so he is eligible. If he had only 2 years of service, his effective age would be 32, which is more than 31 (28 plus 3), so he would not be eligible.
Ex-servicemen also get relaxed PET standards by age group, covered below.
In-service police personnel
Serving members of J&K Police can apply up to 30 years of age. They must still meet the qualification, physical and medical standards like any other candidate.
Domicile and Category Certificates
Domicile: Candidates must be domiciles of the UT of Jammu and Kashmir and hold a domicile certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed format on or before 2 January 2025.
Category certificates: Candidates applying under SC, ST-1, ST-2, OBC, RBA, ALC/IB or EWS need a valid certificate issued by the competent authority under the J&K reservation rules, held by the cut-off date.
Category cannot be changed later: The category you chose in the online form is the one checked at verification. A certificate issued after the cut-off date can lead to your claim being treated as Open Merit or rejected.
Checking your domicile certificate
Look at three things on your certificate before the verification date: the issue date, which must be on or before 2 January 2025; the format, which must be the prescribed one issued by the competent authority; and your name and parentage, which should match your Class 10 certificate and online form. If any detail differs, sort it out with the issuing office in good time and keep the paperwork that explains the difference.

Ex-servicemen | 28 after deducting service, up to 3 years extra | As per category | Discharge certificate |
Fees for OBC, RBA and ALC/IB fall under the Rs. 700 band because the reduced fee was notified only for SC, ST-1, ST-2 and EWS.
Physical Standards
The Physical Standard Test checks height for all candidates and chest for men. It is qualifying only.
Standard | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
Minimum height | 5 feet 6 inches | 5 feet 2 inches |
Chest unexpanded | 32 inches | Not applicable |
Chest expanded | 33.5 inches | Not applicable |
A 2-inch height relaxation is reported for candidates of the Gorkha community and Bot tribe. Check the notification for how it applies before relying on it. Measure your height and chest in advance with a proper tape so there are no surprises on the day.
Physical Endurance Test Standards
Event | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
Race | 1600 metres in 6 minutes 30 seconds | 1000 metres in 6 minutes 30 seconds |
Strength event | 20 push-ups | Shot put (4 kg) of 14.5 feet in three attempts |
For ex-servicemen, the race time is relaxed to 7 minutes 30 seconds for those above 30 and up to 40 years, and to 8 minutes 30 seconds for those above 40, with fewer push-ups or a shorter shot put. These relaxations are as summarised from the notification.
Medical Fitness and Disability
Medical examination: Selected candidates must pass a medical examination before appointment. Eyesight, general health and fitness for police duty are assessed as per the rules.
Persons with disabilities: In the previous SI cycle (Advertisement 06 of 2021), persons with disabilities were not considered eligible because the post requires physical standards and field duty. Check the current notification for the exact position.
Who Is Not Eligible
Over-age candidates: Anyone above 28 on 1 January 2024, unless in-service police or eligible under the ex-servicemen rule.
No degree by the cut-off: Candidates whose graduation was not complete by 2 January 2025.
Non-domiciles: Candidates without a J&K domicile certificate issued by the cut-off date.
Late certificates: Category certificates issued after the cut-off date.
Below physical standards: Candidates who do not meet the height or chest standard, or who fail the PET.
Non-applicants: The application window closed on 2 January 2025, so new candidates cannot join this cycle.
Common Reasons for Rejection at Verification
Most rejections at document verification come from paperwork rather than marks. These are the points to guard against, based on the conditions in the notification:
Certificates dated after the cut-off: A domicile, category or degree document issued after 2 January 2025 does not satisfy the condition, even if you were otherwise eligible.
Details that do not match: Differences in name, parentage or date of birth between the online form, Class 10 certificate and other documents raise questions that can delay or block your case.
Wrong category in the form: Claiming a category you hold no valid certificate for can cost you the reserved seat.
Unclaimed or unproven NCC weightage: Weightage counts only with a valid certificate produced at verification.
Missing originals: Photocopies alone are not enough; carry every original document.
Absence: Missing the verification date without a notified reason can end your candidature.
Self-check Before Document Verification
Run through these questions now, before the written test. A "no" to any of them is worth sorting out early, because the written score does not protect you at verification.
Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
Was my degree result declared on or before 2 January 2025? | A later result date fails the qualification condition |
Is my domicile certificate dated on or before 2 January 2025? | The certificate date, not the application date, is checked |
Does my category certificate match the category in my form? | A mismatch can lead to your category claim being rejected |
Was I within the age limit on 1 January 2024? | Age is checked against your Class 10 certificate |
Do I meet the height and chest standard? | The PST is measured on the day, so check yourself in advance |
Can I complete the race within the time limit? | The PET is qualifying and follows the written result |
Documents to Keep Ready
Admit card and application form: A printout of your submitted online form.
Date of birth proof: Class 10 certificate or equivalent.
Degree: Graduation degree or provisional certificate and mark sheets dated before the cut-off.
Domicile certificate: Issued on or before 2 January 2025.
Category certificate: If you applied under a reserved category.
NCC certificate: If you claim NCC weightage.
Service records: Discharge certificate for ex-servicemen or service certificate for in-service police.
Carry originals and self-attested photocopies for document verification.
Application Fee Recap
Category | Fee |
|---|---|
SC, ST-1, ST-2, EWS | Rs. 600 |
All other candidates | Rs. 700 |
