Karnataka SDA Eligibility : Age Limit, Qualification and Kannada Rules
Karnataka SDA eligibility rests on three things: a pass in Second PUC (Class 12) or an equivalent, an age between 18 and the upper limit for your category, and the ability to read and write Kannada. The Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which now recruits Second Division Assistants for state government departments, applies these conditions from the Karnataka Civil Services (Direct Recruitment) (General) Rules, 2021, and the department recruitment rules.
For the 2026 cycle, two details matter most. The state's one-time 5-year age relaxation raises every upper age limit, and age and qualification are both counted on the last date for applications. This page explains each condition, the relaxations, the Kannada test, documents you need, and who is not eligible.

Educational Qualification
The 2026 amendment to the recruitment rules states the minimum qualification for a Junior Assistant or Second Division Assistant as a pass in the Pre-University Course (PUC) examination or an equivalent qualification. Recent KEA notifications list the following as accepted, subject to the conditions in each notification.
Qualification | Status |

Second PUC from the Karnataka board | Accepted |
CBSE or ICSE Class 12 | Accepted as equivalent |
Class 12 from other state boards | Accepted as equivalent |
NIOS senior secondary | Accepted as equivalent |
Three-year diploma after SSLC | Accepted in recent notifications, with conditions |
Two-year ITI after SSLC | Accepted in some notifications if the stated language and subject conditions are met |
Degree | Eligible, since it is higher than PUC |
Result deadline: Your result must be declared by the last date of application. Candidates waiting for results are not eligible.
Marks card in hand: Keep the original marks card and pass certificate ready for document verification.
Equivalence: Diploma and ITI equivalence depends on the exact wording of the notification, so read it line by line before applying.
Age Limit and Relaxation
The normal upper age limits for Karnataka civil posts are 35, 38 and 40 years. In January 2026 the state cabinet approved a one-time 5-year relaxation for direct recruitment, valid for notifications issued up to 31 December 2027. KEA's 2026 SDA notifications apply it, giving these limits.
Category | Normal upper age | Upper age for current cycles |
|---|---|---|
General Merit | 35 years | 40 years |
Category 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B | 38 years | 43 years |
SC, ST, Category 1 | 40 years | 45 years |
Additional Relaxation
Category | Additional upper age relaxation |
|---|---|
Persons with benchmark disabilities | 10 years |
Ex-servicemen | Period of military service plus 3 years |
Widows (not remarried) | 10 years |
Karnataka government employees | Up to 10 years or the length of service, whichever is less |
These figures are as stated in recent KEA notifications. Always confirm the exact relaxation in the notification you apply under, because the wording can differ between departments.
How the Age Limits Have Changed
Cycle | General Merit | 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B | SC, ST, Category 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
KPSC SDA 2020 (normal limits) | 35 years | 38 years | 40 years |
Notifications in 2026 and 2027 (5-year relaxation) | 40 years | 43 years | 45 years |
The 3-year relaxation announced in September 2025 was replaced by the 5-year relaxation approved in January 2026. Many older pages still show 35 years as the upper limit, so check the notification for your cycle. The 5-year relaxation applies to notifications issued up to 31 December 2027; after that, limits are expected to return to the normal levels unless the state extends it.
How to Check Your Age
Count your age on the last date for applications. For example, if the last date is 30 October 2026, a General Merit candidate must be born on or after 31 October 1985 and must have turned 18 by that date. Under the relaxed limit, the upper age is 40 years.
Kannada Language Requirement
The recruitment rules say no candidate can be selected unless they qualify in a Kannada language test. You are treated as having met this requirement if you studied Kannada as a first or second language in SSLC or a higher exam, or have passed a KPSC or KEA Kannada test earlier.
If neither applies, you must sit the Compulsory Kannada Language Test:
Format: One objective paper of 150 marks.
Pass mark: 50 marks.
Standard: First-language Kannada at SSLC level.
Merit: Marks are not counted in the merit list, but failing makes you ineligible regardless of your main exam score.
Why the rule exists: an SDA handles files, letters and public queries in Kannada, the state's official language. Even if you are exempt from the test, General Kannada still carries 35 marks in Paper 2, so you will need working grammar either way.
Your situation | Kannada test needed? |
|---|---|
Studied Kannada as first language in SSLC | No |
Studied Kannada as second language in SSLC | No |
Studied in a CBSE or ICSE school without Kannada in SSLC | Yes, unless already passed a KPSC or KEA Kannada test |
Passed an earlier KPSC or KEA Compulsory Kannada test | No, keep the certificate ready |
Nationality, Domicile and Other Conditions
Citizenship: You must be a citizen of India.
Reservation claims: Category, income and caste benefits apply only to candidates eligible under Karnataka's reservation orders, with valid certificates in the prescribed format.
Kalyana Karnataka cadre: To claim posts reserved under Article 371J, you need a valid Kalyana Karnataka residence certificate.
Posting: Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in Karnataka, whatever preferences they gave.
Probation: Appointment is on a two-year probation.
Reservation and Kalyana Karnataka Cadre
Karnataka fills SDA posts through vertical reservation (by category) and horizontal reservation (within each category). Your eligibility for a reserved seat depends on holding the right certificate on the date the notification asks for.
Vertical Reservation Categories
Seats are divided among General Merit, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Category 1 and the backward class groups 2A, 2B, 3A and 3B. The backward class groups need a caste and income certificate in the prescribed form, and the creamy layer rules apply to them.
Horizontal Reservation
Within each category, seats are kept for groups such as women, rural candidates, candidates who studied in Kannada medium, ex-servicemen, persons with benchmark disabilities and project displaced persons. A 2026 rule change also added a sports quota for candidates who have represented Karnataka at recognised national or international events, as reported. Each group needs its own certificate, and the share of seats is given in the notification.
Kalyana Karnataka (371J) Local Cadre
Under Article 371J, posts in the Kalyana Karnataka region (Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Raichur, Koppal, Ballari and Vijayanagara districts) are filled as a separate local cadre, and a share of posts outside the region is also reserved for local candidates. You need a valid residence certificate issued under the 371J rules to claim these posts. KEA lists residual parent cadre and Kalyana Karnataka vacancies separately, so check both tables before applying.
Points Candidates Often Get Wrong
Rural candidate reservation: This is based on where you studied (typically classes 1 to 10 in rural areas), not where you live now, and needs a specific certificate.
Kannada medium reservation: This depends on studying in Kannada medium for the years the rules require, which is separate from the Kannada language test exemption.
Category certificates: Certificates must usually be valid as on the last date of application; an older certificate may be rejected.
Who Is Not Eligible
Results pending: Candidates whose Second PUC or equivalent result is not declared by the last date.
Over or under age: Candidates outside the age band for their category on the reference date.
Kannada test not cleared: Candidates who must take the Kannada test and score below 50.
Invalid certificates: Wrong or unsupported reservation, disability or Kalyana Karnataka claims.
Rule-based disqualification: Candidates barred by the general recruitment rules, such as those debarred by a recruiting authority.

SDA and FDA Eligibility Compared
Point | SDA | FDA |
|---|---|---|
Minimum qualification | Second PUC or equivalent | Bachelor's degree from a recognised university |

If you are a graduate, you can usually apply for both, but you must rank the posts in order of preference in a combined notification.
Eligibility Checklist Before You Apply
Qualification: Is your Second PUC or equivalent result declared, and is your board or diploma accepted in the notification?
Age: Are you within the upper limit for your category on the last date of application?
Kannada: Does your SSLC marks card show Kannada as a first or second language? If not, plan for the Kannada test.
Certificates: Are your caste, income, rural, Kannada medium or 371J certificates valid and in the latest prescribed format?
Details match: Do your name and date of birth match exactly across SSLC, PUC and ID documents?
Preferences: Have you decided the order of departments or posts you want, since this is fixed once you submit?
A single error in category or cadre claims can lead to rejection at document verification, even after you clear the exam. Spend time on this step before you pay the fee.
