KPSC KAS Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Attempts

KPSC KAS eligibility depends on three things: a recognised degree, your age on the reference date, and the category under which you apply. The Karnataka Public Service Commission sets these conditions for the Gazetted Probationers (Group A and B) recruitment under the Karnataka Gazetted Probationers rules, and each notification confirms them for that cycle.

This guide follows the 2026-27 notification dated 31 July 2026, which raised the upper age limits through a one-time five-year relaxation. It covers the qualification, the category-wise age limit, relaxations, attempt limits, reservation claims and the certificates you need. Where a detail is not clearly confirmed in the notification, we say so and tell you where to check.

Educational Qualification

Degree Requirement

You need a bachelor's degree, or a master's degree, from a university established by law in India, or a qualification declared equivalent. The degree can be in any subject: arts, science, commerce, engineering, medicine, law or any other stream. There is no minimum percentage.

Final-Year Students

Students who are in the final year of their degree can generally apply and take the preliminary exam. The notification states how and when proof of passing must be produced, and whether a certificate from the university or institution is accepted in the meantime. Medical and similar graduates whose internship is not yet complete should read this clause closely.

Equivalent and Foreign Qualifications

If your degree is from an open university, a deemed university or a foreign institution, keep proof that it is recognised as equivalent to a degree from a university established by law in India. The burden of proving equivalence is on the candidate.

Practical Tips

  • Match your certificates: Your name and date of birth in the application must match your SSLC and degree certificates exactly.

  • Keep marks cards ready: Provisional and final marks cards, the degree certificate and any equivalence order may be called for at document verification.

KPSC KAS Age Limit

The minimum age is 21 years for all categories. The maximum depends on your category. For the 2026-27 cycle, the upper limits include a one-time five-year relaxation announced by the State Government, so they are five years higher than the usual limits.

The one-time relaxation applies to this recruitment. Do not assume it will carry over to the next cycle; future notifications may return to the usual limits.

Age Reference Date

Age is counted on the reference date stated in the notification, usually tied to the last date for applications. Third-party pages give different dates for this cycle, so use the date printed in the official notification.

How to Check Your Age

  1. Use your SSLC date of birth: This is the date KPSC accepts.

  2. Count on the reference date: You must be at least 21 and must not have crossed the upper limit for your category on that date.

  3. Add any relaxation you are entitled to: For example, a General Merit candidate with a qualifying disability adds 10 years to 40.

Worked Age Examples

The examples below use the 2026-27 upper limits and ignore the exact reference date for simplicity. Always check your own age against the date printed in the notification.

Relaxations generally do not combine freely. Where you qualify under more than one head, the notification explains which applies. If you are unsure, read the age clause in the notification rather than relying on summaries.

Number of Attempts

KPSC limits the number of times you can take the Gazetted Probationers exam, and the limit depends on your category. Recent notifications have stated the following, always subject to the upper age limit:

Category

Maximum attempts

General Merit

5

Category 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B

7

SC, ST

No limit within the age limit

Category-1

Reported differently by different sources; confirm in the notification

An attempt is normally counted when you appear in at least one paper of the preliminary exam. Applying without appearing does not usually count. Keep a record of the years in which you have written prelims.

Nationality, Language and Residence

  • Nationality: You must be a citizen of India or meet the nationality conditions in the notification.

  • Kannada: The main exam has a compulsory Kannada paper of SSLC first-language standard, and you need at least 35% in it. In practice, you must be able to read and write Kannada comfortably.

  • Residence: Candidates from outside Karnataka can apply, but they compete as General Merit candidates. Karnataka reservation benefits need certificates issued by Karnataka authorities.

  • Physical and medical fitness: Selected candidates must meet the medical standards for the post. Some posts, such as Assistant Superintendent of Prisons and Deputy Superintendent of Excise, may have additional physical standards in their recruitment rules.

Working Candidates and Government Employees

Working professionals can apply; there is no rule against holding a job while preparing. Candidates already in government service, including Karnataka State employees, should follow their employer's rules on applying for other posts and keep the required permission or intimation ready for document verification. The notification states any service-related age concession and the documents serving employees must produce.

If you are selected while in service, joining the new post is subject to relief from your current employer, so start that process as soon as results are announced.

Reservation Claims and Certificates

Karnataka reserves posts both vertically (by category) and horizontally (for groups such as women and rural candidates). Each claim needs a certificate in the format given in the notification, valid on the relevant date.

Claim

Who can claim

Proof needed

SC, ST, Category-1

Members of these categories in Karnataka

Caste certificate from the competent Karnataka authority

Category 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B

Members of these backward classes within the income limit

Hyderabad-Karnataka (Article 371J)

Local persons of the Kalyana Karnataka region

Eligibility certificate from the competent authority in the prescribed annexure

Rural candidates

Those who studied in rural areas as defined in the rules

Rural study certificate

Kannada medium

Those who studied in Kannada medium for the period specified

Kannada medium study certificate

Persons with disabilities

Candidates with a benchmark disability

Disability certificate from the medical authority

Ex-servicemen

Released members of the armed forces

Discharge or service certificate

Claims must be made in the online application. A claim you did not make at the application stage usually cannot be added later, and a claim you cannot support with a valid certificate is rejected.

Hyderabad-Karnataka and Residual Parent Cadre Posts

Of the 319 posts in the 2026-27 cycle, 22 are reserved for the Hyderabad-Karnataka (Kalyana Karnataka) region under Article 371J and 297 are Residual Parent Cadre (RPC) posts. Only candidates holding a valid local person certificate for the region can be considered against HK posts. Such candidates can also compete for RPC posts on merit, which gives them two routes to selection.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Under or over age: Candidates below 21 or above their category's upper limit on the reference date.

  • No degree in time: Candidates who cannot produce proof of a recognised degree by the stage the notification fixes.

  • Attempts exhausted: Candidates who have used all attempts allowed for their category.

  • Debarred candidates: Anyone debarred by KPSC or another recruiting body for misconduct, impersonation or use of unfair means.

  • Invalid claims: Reservation claims without valid certificates, which can lead to rejection or a shift to General Merit.

Common Eligibility Mistakes

  • Using the usual age limit: Some candidates who are 36 to 40 do not apply because they remember the 35-year General Merit limit. The one-time relaxation changes that for this cycle.

  • Expired income certificates: Backward class claims depend on a caste and income certificate valid for the period stated in the notification. An old certificate can turn a reserved claim into a General Merit one.

  • Wrong rural or Kannada medium claims: These claims need study in the qualifying area or medium for the full period the rules specify. Partial study does not qualify.

  • Mismatched details: A different spelling of your name or a different date of birth between OTR and certificates can delay document verification.

  • Ignoring the Kannada paper: Candidates who meet every other condition sometimes underestimate the Kannada qualifying paper. Start practising early if Kannada is not your first language.
