KSET eligibility

Educational qualification

Candidates need a Master's degree or equivalent from a UGC-recognised university, in the subject they choose for KSET or a related subject. General category candidates need at least 55% marks. Candidates from Category-I, II-A, II-B, III-A, III-B, SC, ST, PwD and transgender categories covered by the notification need at least 50%. The percentage is taken without rounding off, so 54.9% does not count as 55%.

Age limit

There is no upper age limit for KSET. You can apply at any age as long as you meet the qualification rules.

Other conditions

  • Final-year candidates: Those in the final year of a Master's degree or awaiting results can apply provisionally and must complete the degree with the required marks within the time allowed by the notification.

  • Candidates from other states: They can apply under the General category only, and reservation benefits do not apply to them.

  • Already qualified: A candidate who has already qualified KSET in a subject cannot appear again in the same subject.

Application fee and how to apply

Category

Fee

General, Category II-A, II-B, III-A, III-B and candidates from other states

Rs. 750

Category-I, SC-A, SC-B, SC-C, ST, PwD and transgender candidates covered by the notification

Rs. 500

The fee is paid online and is not refundable. Steps to apply in a KSET cycle:

  1. Open the KSET application link on the KEA website and register with a valid mobile number and email ID.

  2. Fill in personal, category and academic details, and choose your KSET subject and exam centre.

  3. Upload a recent photograph and signature in the format the notification specifies.

  4. Pay the fee online before the fee deadline.

  5. Download and keep the submitted form and payment receipt.

Common reasons for trouble later are a wrong category claim, a subject that does not match your Master's degree, and missing the fee deadline even after submitting the form. Changes to subject, category or centre are generally not allowed after submission.

KSET exam pattern

KSET has two objective papers written in a single three-hour session. Every question carries 2 marks and there is no negative marking.

Paper

Questions

Marks

Nature

Paper 1

50

100

Teaching and research aptitude, reasoning, comprehension and general awareness (common to all)

Paper 2

100

200

Subject chosen at registration

Total

150

300

Three hours in one session

What this means for you

  • Attempt every question: With no negative marking, a blank answer can only cost you marks.

  • Paper 2 carries two-thirds of the marks: Your subject decides most of your score, so give it most of your study time.

  • Paper 1 is still decisive: Qualification is on the aggregate of both papers, so a weak Paper 1 can pull a good subject score below the cut-off.

Older pages may still show the earlier three-paper KSET format, so follow the current notification. See the full KSET exam pattern for time planning.

KSET syllabus summary

Paper

Subject

Important areas

Paper 1

General paper

Teaching aptitude, research aptitude, comprehension, communication, mathematical reasoning, logical reasoning, data interpretation, ICT, people development and environment, higher education system

Paper 2

Your chosen subject

Postgraduate-level syllabus of the subject, usually organised in ten units

The 2026 cycle covered 37 subjects, including Commerce, Kannada, English, Economics, History, Political Science, Management, Education, Computer Science and Applications, and the science subjects. Paper 2 has traditionally followed the UGC NET syllabus for the matching subject, so use the syllabus that KEA links in the notification as your final reference.

How KSET qualifiers are decided

  1. Appear in both papers: Only candidates who write Paper 1 and Paper 2 are considered.

  2. Clear the minimum aggregate: At least 40% of 300 (120 marks) for General candidates and 35% (105 marks) for reserved categories.

  3. Fall within the 6% slots: The number of qualifiers is limited to about 6% of candidates who appeared in both papers, divided subject-wise and category-wise under the reservation rules.

  4. Document verification: Eligibility is checked against your documents before the eligibility certificate is issued.

Meeting the 40% or 35% minimum is necessary but not enough. The actual cut-off in each subject and category is usually well above it.

Career scope after KSET

Qualifying KSET makes you eligible to be considered for Assistant Professor posts in universities and colleges in Karnataka. It does not itself give a job; recruitment happens separately through the state, universities and colleges. Under the UGC pay structure, Assistant Professor posts start at Academic Level 10, with an entry basic pay of Rs. 57,700. Actual pay and allowances depend on the employer and on whether the institution follows UGC scales, so treat this as indicative.

How to prepare for KSET

Paper 1

Paper 1 rewards regular practice more than long reading. Spend 45 to 60 minutes a day on reasoning, data interpretation and comprehension, and cover the theory units (teaching, research, higher education, ICT, environment) through short notes. Solve previous papers early to see how questions are framed.

Paper 2

Work through your subject unit by unit using your postgraduate notes and standard textbooks. Keep a one-page summary per unit with key thinkers, terms, dates or formulas. Revise each unit at least twice before the exam.

KSET cut-off reference

Cut-offs are released subject-wise and category-wise, out of 300. As one example, reported KSET 2025 cut-offs for Commerce were 172 for General Merit, 166 for Category III-B and 154 for SC-B. In KSET 2025, 8,383 of 1,21,052 candidates who appeared in both papers qualified.

Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, the number of applicants and the slots available. Treat these figures as a benchmark only, and aim for a clear margin above them.
