NEET PG Eligibility Criteria 2026: Internship, Age, FMG Rules
Before you plan a NEET PG attempt, you need to know whether you can sit for it at all. The NEET PG eligibility criteria 2026 are set by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) in its information bulletin. In short, you need a recognised MBBS degree, valid medical council registration and a completed or soon-to-be-completed one-year internship by the cut-off date. There is no age limit.
This guide explains each condition in plain terms, including the internship cut-off date that decides most borderline cases, the rules for foreign medical graduates and foreign nationals, and the difference between eligibility for the exam and eligibility for counselling. Year-specific details follow the 2026 cycle, while the explanations stay useful for future cycles.

NEET PG is the single entrance route for MD, MS, PG Diploma and Post MBBS DNB courses, so these conditions apply to almost every medical graduate who wants a postgraduate seat in India.
Educational Qualification
You must hold an MBBS degree, or a Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate, that is recognised under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 and the repealed Indian Medical Council Act, 1956. A degree from a college that is not recognised under these laws does not meet the requirement.
Provisional certificate holders
If you have passed the final MBBS examination but have not yet received your degree, the Provisional MBBS Pass Certificate is enough to apply. Keep both documents ready, because you may be asked for the degree later during counselling and admission.
Who this covers
Graduates of Indian medical colleges: MBBS from an NMC-recognised institution, with internship and registration as described below.
Foreign medical graduates: Candidates with a medical degree from outside India, who must meet the additional conditions in the next sections.
Candidates who have not finished the internship yet: You can apply if you are likely to complete it by the cut-off date.
Internship Cut-Off Date
The internship rule creates the most confusion, so it is worth reading slowly. NBEMS requires you to have completed the one-year compulsory rotating internship, or to be likely to complete it, on or before a cut-off date announced for the admission session. For the NEET PG 2026 cycle, that date was 30 September 2026.
Your situation | Where you stand for the 2026 cycle |
|---|---|
Internship already completed | Eligible on this condition |
Internship will finish on or before the cut-off date | Eligible, but keep proof of the expected completion date |
Internship will finish after the cut-off date | Not eligible for this cycle, and you should plan for the next one |
Some older pages still show other cut-off dates, such as 30 June or 31 July, from earlier schedules or drafts. Older pages may still show those dates, so follow the information bulletin of the cycle you are applying for.
Why the date matters even after the exam
The cut-off is not only an application checkpoint. If your application claims that you will finish the internship in time and you do not, your candidature can be cancelled at the counselling or admission stage. Treat the completion date as a firm commitment and keep your internship certificate safe.
Medical Registration
You need a permanent or provisional registration certificate for your MBBS qualification. It can be issued by the NMC, the erstwhile Medical Council of India or a State Medical Council. Provisional registration is common for interns, and it is accepted for applying.
Match your details: The name, date of birth and registration number on your certificate should match your application and your other documents.
Check validity: Make sure the certificate has not expired or been surrendered.
Keep a scanned copy: You will need to enter the registration details in the form and may have to show the certificate later.
Age Limit and Number of Attempts
NEET PG has no minimum or maximum age limit. A graduate can appear at any age as long as the other conditions are met.
The eligibility conditions in the bulletin do not set a cap on attempts, so you can sit for the exam again in a later cycle. If you plan a repeat attempt, check the latest bulletin each year, because rules and dates can change between sessions.
Nationality and Foreign Candidates
NEET PG is open to Indian nationals and to foreign nationals who hold a recognised basic medical qualification, subject to the conditions in the bulletin. NBEMS states that the exam is also compulsory for foreign nationals who want admission to MD, MS or PG Diploma courses in India.
Foreign medical graduates
If your MBBS is from a medical institution outside India, you need to meet extra conditions before you can apply.
Qualify the screening test: You must have cleared the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) conducted by NBEMS, wherever it applies to you.
Hold registration: You need provisional or permanent registration with the NMC or a State Medical Council.
Complete the internship in India: The internship must be finished by the cut-off date, in line with the bulletin.
Keep your certificates ready: Have your FMGE pass certificate and registration certificate available, along with your degree.
Rules for foreign graduates are detailed and can include documentation steps that depend on your situation. Read the nationality and foreign-graduate sections of the information bulletin line by line before you apply.
Foreign nationals
Foreign nationals follow a separate set of conditions in the bulletin, and some of them relate to clearances and documents that take time to arrange. Start early, and confirm each requirement on the official NBEMS page instead of relying on summaries.
Exam Eligibility Versus Counselling Eligibility
Clearing the conditions above lets you appear in NEET PG, but it does not automatically guarantee a seat. Admission happens through counselling, which has its own rules.
Stage | Who decides | What is checked |
|---|---|---|
Appearing in NEET PG | NBEMS | Degree, registration, internship by the cut-off date, nationality and documents |
Qualifying for ranking | NBEMS | Reaching the qualifying percentile in the paper |
Counselling and admission | MCC for all-India seats, state authorities for state seats, and institutions | Seat rules, category certificates, domicile or quota rules and original documents |
Seats in AIIMS, PGIMER, JIPMER, NIMHANS and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute are not part of the centralised process through NEET PG, as the bulletin notes. If you are targeting those institutes, follow their own notices.
Courses Your NEET PG Eligibility Opens
One set of eligibility conditions covers every route that uses the NEET PG score. That is why a single rank can lead to very different seats.
Route | What it includes |
|---|---|
All India quota | 50 percent of seats in government colleges across all states and union territories |
State quota | Seats allotted by state authorities for each state and union territory |
Private and deemed institutions | Private medical colleges, institutions and universities, including deemed universities |
Armed Forces Medical Services | Postgraduate seats in armed forces institutions |
NBEMS courses | Post MBBS DNB, Direct 6-Year DrNB and NBEMS Diploma courses |
No state government, private college or university runs a separate entrance for MD, MS or PG Diploma admission, according to NBEMS. So if you are not eligible for NEET PG in a given cycle, there is no alternative entrance test for the same seats.
Common Mistakes While Checking Eligibility
Relying on an old page: A cut-off date copied from a previous cycle can be wrong by months. Always check the bulletin of the current session.
Assuming the internship end date will not slip: Leave, extensions or posting changes can push your completion date later. Confirm the schedule with your college before you apply.
Mixing up exam and counselling rules: Being allowed to take the test does not mean every seat is open to you. Check the counselling rules of the quota you want.
Entering details from memory: Registration numbers and dates should be copied from your certificates, not typed from memory.
Leaving document checks for the last day: Missing certificates are hard to arrange in a few hours, especially for foreign graduates.
Who May Not Be Eligible
These situations most often block an application or create trouble later.
Internship finishing after the cut-off: The most common reason for being ineligible in a given cycle.
No valid registration: Candidates without permanent or provisional registration cannot proceed.
Unrecognised degree: A degree not recognised under the NMC Act, 2019 and the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 does not qualify.
Foreign graduate without the required screening: Foreign medical graduates who have not met the FMGE condition, where it applies, cannot apply.
Mismatched or missing documents: A different name or date of birth across certificates can delay or cancel an application.
Documents to Keep Ready
Document | Why you need it |
|---|---|
MBBS degree or Provisional Pass Certificate | Proves your qualification |
Registration certificate | Proves NMC or State Medical Council registration |
Internship details and certificate | Shows start date, completion date and total days, or the expected completion date |
Aadhaar details | The 2026 bulletin uses Aadhaar-based verification, and the details cannot be changed after submission |
Photographs, signature and thumb impression | Required in the formats given in the bulletin |
FMGE pass certificate (foreign graduates) | Proves the screening requirement |
A Simple Eligibility Check Before You Apply
Confirm your degree: Check that your college and degree are recognised under the NMC Act and the earlier Indian Medical Council Act.
Check your registration: Confirm that your certificate is valid and its details match your other documents.
Calculate your internship dates: Count the days from your joining date and confirm that the end date falls on or before the cut-off.
Read the bulletin sections for your category: Indian graduates, foreign medical graduates and foreign nationals each have their own conditions.
Scan every document: Keep clear copies in the required format before the application window opens.
For the latest dates, rules and corrigenda, always rely on the official NBEMS NEET PG page.
