NIACL Assistant Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Education and Language
NIACL Assistant eligibility rests on four things: a graduation degree, English as a subject somewhere in your education, an age between 21 and 30 years on a fixed date, and the ability to read, write and speak the language of the state you apply for. Meeting the first three is usually easy to check. The language rule and the reference dates are where applicants slip.
The conditions below come from the last notified Assistant recruitment of The New India Assurance Company Limited. As of 19 October 2026, we could not verify a new Assistant notice on the official website, so the exact reference dates for the next cycle are not known. Treat the dates here as examples of how the rules work, and always confirm them against the new notification before you apply or pay the fee.

Educational qualification
Degree requirement
You need a graduation degree in any discipline. Arts, commerce, science, engineering and other streams are all acceptable, as long as the degree comes from a university or institution recognised by the relevant government authority. A diploma or a school certificate alone is not a degree.
English requirement
The notice asks that English was a subject at the SSC, HSC, Intermediate or graduation level. This means English must appear on at least one of those mark sheets. If your degree has no English paper, check your Class 10 or Class 12 mark sheet. If English appears there, you meet this condition.
Result and certificate date
Candidates should hold the degree certificate or a provisional certificate on or before the date stated in the notice. Sources for the last cycle quote different dates for this, so do not rely on a secondary website. In practice, if your final result is declared after the cut-off date mentioned in the notice, you cannot apply in that cycle, even if you finish the course soon afterwards.
Percentage of marks
The sources we reviewed do not mention a minimum percentage of marks in graduation. Some other insurance and banking exams do ask for one, so read the notification to be sure there is no such condition for the cycle you are applying to.
Final-year students
Final-year students whose results are not out by the notice date are generally not eligible. If you are in this position, use the time to practise, and apply when the next notice opens with a date that suits you.
Age limit and relaxations
The age limit in the last cycle was 21 to 30 years. The age is counted on a fixed reference date given in the notice, not on the day you apply or the day of the exam. Two reference dates appear on different websites for the last cycle, 1 December 2024 and 1 January 2025. Most sources quoted 1 December 2024, with a date-of-birth window from 2 December 1994 to 1 December 2003, both days inclusive. Because the sources differ, use the notice for the actual date.
How to calculate your age
Count from your date of birth to the reference date. Here are two examples using the 1 December 2024 date as an illustration.
Born on 15 March 1996: Age on the reference date is 28 years, so you meet the general limit.
Born on 1 November 1994: You turned 30 on 1 November 2024 and turn 31 only after 1 November 2025, so on the reference date you were 30 years and one month old, which is over the limit for General candidates, and you would need a relaxation to qualify.
Note that a candidate born exactly on the last day of the window is still within the limit, and one born even a day earlier is not. Check this with the date-of-birth window printed in the notice.
Age relaxation
Category | Upper age relaxation |
|---|---|
Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) | 5 years |
Other Backward Classes (OBC), non-creamy layer | 3 years |
Persons with benchmark disabilities | 10 years |
Ex-servicemen and disabled ex-servicemen | Actual period of service plus 3 years, subject to a maximum age of 45 as reported |
Widows, divorced women and women judicially separated, not remarried | 5 years as reported |
Existing employees of the company | 5 years as reported |
The first three rows appear consistently across sources. The last three are reported by some websites, so verify them in the notification. Relaxations are not added together in most recruitment rules. A candidate who fits more than one category usually claims the larger one, so check the notice for how it is applied.
Certificates for age relaxation
If you claim a relaxation, you need the matching certificate: a caste certificate for SC and ST, a non-creamy layer certificate for OBC issued in the format and within the validity period the notice specifies, and a disability certificate for benchmark disabilities. An OBC candidate without a valid non-creamy layer certificate is treated as General, so keep your documents ready before the notice appears, as certificates can take weeks to issue.
Regional language requirement
NIACL recruits Assistants state by state, and each post needs a person who can work in the local language. You should be able to read, write and speak the official language of the state or union territory you choose. A Regional Language Test is held for candidates who clear the Mains, and failing it removes you from selection.
State or union territory (examples) | Language in the last notice |
|---|---|
Maharashtra | Marathi |
Gujarat | Gujarati |
Karnataka | Kannada |
Kerala | Malayalam |
Tamil Nadu | Tamil |
Madhya Pradesh | Hindi |
Choose the state in which you can pass the language test comfortably, not just the one with the most posts. A large vacancy count in a state where you cannot write the language is no use. Also note that you can choose only one state in one application, so the choice matters.
Nationality and other conditions
The notice for the last cycle allowed the following categories.
Indian citizens: The main group of applicants.
Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan: Allowed with a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India.
Tibetan refugees: Those who came to India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of settling permanently, with the required certificate.
Persons of Indian origin: People who migrated from certain listed countries to settle in India, again with the required certificate.
Candidates in the last three categories must carry a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India. Keep a copy handy, because it may be checked at the document verification stage.
Medical fitness and conduct
Selection is subject to medical fitness and verification of documents, and the company may reject a candidate whose records do not match the application. Furnishing wrong information, concealing facts or using unfair means can lead to cancellation of candidature at any stage. Details of the medical standard are given in the notice.
Who may not be eligible
Candidates without a degree on the cut-off date: Results declared after the date in the notice do not count.
Candidates outside the age window: Even a few days outside the window, without a valid relaxation, make you ineligible.
Candidates without the English subject condition: English should appear on one of the mark sheets named in the notice.
Candidates who cannot read, write and speak the state language: You may clear the Mains and still be rejected at the language test.
OBC candidates with an old or wrong certificate: Certificates not in the specified format, or beyond the specified date, may not be accepted for relaxation.
Being unsure is a good reason to read the notice line by line. Apply only if every condition is clear, since fees are not refunded.
Fee and documents in brief
In the last cycle, the fee was Rs. 850 for General, OBC and EWS candidates, and Rs. 100 for SC, ST, persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen. The fee was paid online and was not refundable. The usual documents are a recent photograph, signature, ID proof, mark sheets and certificates for category claims.
