NIFT Eligibility 2027: Age Limit and Qualification

NIFT eligibility 2027 depends on the programme you want: B.Des and B.F.Tech after Class 12, or M.Des, M.F.M and M.F.Tech after a bachelor's degree. This page explains the qualification, the age limit and the conditions that can decide whether your application is accepted.

The 2027 details below come from reports of the National Testing Agency (NTA) notification and are tentative. Where the 2026 official seat allocation guidelines give a clear rule, that rule is stated as the 2026 position. Always confirm the final conditions in the 2027 information bulletin before you apply.

Educational qualification

Bachelor's programmes

For B.Des, candidates with a Class 12 pass from a recognised board are eligible, and reports say final-year students who are appearing in Class 12 may apply too. For B.F.Tech, reports state that mathematics is needed in Class 12. One report adds physics as well, so check the exact subject rule in the bulletin before you choose this programme.

Candidates who are still appearing for Class 12 need to submit proof of the pass by the date set in the bulletin. In the 2026 cycle, NIFT told candidates to submit proof of eligibility by the stipulated date or risk losing the admission. Keep your marksheet ready.

Postgraduate programmes

M.Des, M.F.M and M.F.Tech candidates need a bachelor's degree from a recognised institution, and a few streams also accept a three-year undergraduate diploma from NIFT or NID. Which discipline is allowed differs by programme, so match your degree with the programme list in the bulletin.

Age limit

For bachelor's programmes, the 2026 cycle required candidates to be under 24 years of age as on 1 August 2026. The same rule is reported for 2027 with 1 August 2027 as the date.

SC, ST and PwD

General, OBC and EWS

None

NRI candidates in the 2026 cycle were also held to the under 24 years rule for bachelor's programmes. Lateral entry and postgraduate programmes had no age limit in the 2026 guidelines as reported, but confirm this for 2027.

Other conditions

  • Both tests: B.Des and M.Des candidates must take the GAT and the CAT, and missing either one can end your chances of reaching the next stage.

  • Domicile benefit: at campuses in certain states, 20 percent of seats were earmarked in 2026 for candidates whose Class 12 school is in that state. A special 35 percent quota applied at NIFT Srinagar.

  • Category and PwD status: these cannot be changed during counselling registration, so enter them correctly at the time of application.

  • Identity checks: Aadhaar-based e-KYC, a live photograph and a valid UDID card for PwD candidates are reported.

Who may not be eligible

  • Candidates who are over the age limit without a valid relaxation category.

  • Candidates who cannot show a Class 12 or degree pass by the date in the bulletin.

  • Candidates whose documents do not match their application details.

Fee and documents

The reported application fee is Rs. 2,000 for Open, Open-EWS and OBC (NCL) candidates and Rs. 500 for SC, ST and PwD candidates for one programme. Keep a recent photograph, signature and category certificate ready in the format the portal asks for. Apply only through the NTA NIFT page and track counselling on the NIFT admissions portal.
