Odisha Police Constable Syllabus 2026: Subject-wise Topics and Study Plan
The Odisha Police Constable syllabus for 2026 is set by the Odisha Uniformed Services Staff Selection Commission (OUSSSC) for its Combined Uniformed Services (Below Graduate Level) Examination 2026. Every applicant for Constable (Civil), Constable OISF and the other posts sits one common written paper covering five areas: Odia, English, General Knowledge, Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning, and Basic Computer Literacy.
This page turns those five areas into a topic-by-topic checklist, shows where to start in each subject, explains the special papers for Constable (Communication) and the driver posts, and ends with a week-by-week plan. The advertisement names the subjects and outlines the topics, but it does not give a fixed mark split per subject. Treat the lists below as a working checklist and confirm details against the syllabus annexure on the OUSSSC website.

Key Changes to Know
New conducting body: OUSSSC replaced the earlier departmental recruitment route, so this is the first syllabus under the combined exam.
One common paper for all posts: Constable (Civil) and Constable OISF applicants prepare for the same paper. There is no separate post-specific paper for them.
Basic Computer Literacy added: Computer basics now sit inside the common paper, so they cannot be skipped.
Reasoning paired with quant: Quantitative aptitude and reasoning are grouped as one subject area.
Older pages may still show a syllabus with only Odia, English, General Awareness and Arithmetic, or no computer section. Follow the 2026 OUSSSC advertisement.
Odia Language Syllabus
Odia tests grammar and usage more than literature. Questions are short and rule-based, so this is one of the fastest sections to score in if you revise grammar properly.
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Grammar basics | Parts of speech (noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, indeclinable), prefixes and suffixes | Parts of speech |
Word formation | Sandhi, samasa, krudanta and taddhita, case and inflection (karaka and bibhakti) | Sandhi and samasa |
Vocabulary | Synonyms, antonyms, homophones, words with many meanings, one-word substitution | Synonyms and antonyms |
Usage | Correct and incorrect sentences, spelling errors, voice change, common errors | Sentence correction |
Idioms | Idioms, proverbs and their meanings | Frequently used proverbs |
Revise sandhi and samasa rules with examples and keep a list of commonly misspelt words. These areas produce the most avoidable errors.
English Language Syllabus
English is set at about school-leaving level. Grammar-based questions dominate, with some vocabulary and a short passage.
Grammar
Parts of speech: Articles, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions.
Verbs and tenses: Tense usage, subject-verb agreement, modals.
Transformation: Active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech.
Error work: Spotting errors, sentence improvement, fill in the blanks.
Vocabulary and comprehension
Word knowledge: Synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution, spelling.
Idioms and phrases: Meanings of common idioms and phrasal verbs.
Sentence arrangement: Rearranging jumbled sentences or parts of a sentence.
Reading comprehension: A short passage with direct and inference questions.
General Knowledge Syllabus
General Knowledge is the widest area. It mixes static topics with current affairs, and Odisha-specific questions are a regular feature.
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Current affairs | State, national and international events, sports, awards, important days, books and authors, science and technology news | Last 6 to 12 months of Odisha and national news |
History | Ancient, medieval and modern India, the freedom movement, history and culture of Odisha | Freedom movement and Odisha history |
Geography | Physical geography of India, natural resources, agriculture, physical and economic geography of Odisha | Odisha rivers, districts and resources |
Polity | Constitution of India, fundamental rights and duties, Directive Principles, Union and State government, local self-government | Fundamental rights and duties |
Economy | Basic concepts of the Indian economy, economic development, government schemes | Major central and Odisha schemes |
General science | Everyday physics, chemistry and biology up to Class 10, environment and health | Human body and everyday science |
Odisha GK: the area most candidates underprepare
Culture and heritage: Temples, festivals, dance forms, handicrafts and famous personalities of Odisha.
Geography of Odisha: Districts, rivers, lakes, wildlife sanctuaries, mineral belts and ports.
Administration: Formation of the state, key institutions and recent state government schemes.
Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning Syllabus
This area rewards daily practice more than any other. The arithmetic is school level, but speed and accuracy decide the score.
Quantitative aptitude
Topic group | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Number work | Number system, simplification, decimals and fractions, HCF and LCM, square roots |
Percentage-based | Percentage, profit and loss, discount, simple and compound interest |
Ratio-based | Ratio and proportion, average, ages, mixtures, partnership |
Time-based | Time and work, pipes and cisterns, time, speed and distance |
Measurement and data | Mensuration of basic figures, simple data interpretation (tables and bar graphs) |
Reasoning
Type | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Verbal reasoning | Analogy, classification, number and letter series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense, order and ranking, syllogism |
Non-verbal reasoning | Pattern completion, figure analogy and classification, mirror and water images, paper folding |
Start with percentage, ratio and average, because many other arithmetic chapters build on them. In reasoning, coding-decoding, series and blood relations are quick wins once the method is clear.
Basic Computer Literacy Syllabus
This section checks practical, everyday computer knowledge. Questions are factual, so a short focused study block plus regular revision is usually enough.
Computer fundamentals: Parts of a computer, input and output devices, memory and storage units.
Hardware and software: System and application software, operating systems and their basic functions.
Office applications: Basics of word processing, spreadsheets and presentations, common shortcut keys.
Internet and email: Browsers, search, email features, file attachments, common abbreviations.
Networks and security: Types of networks, viruses and malware, safe online practices, basics of cyber security and digital payments.
Where to Focus First
The advertisement does not publish a subject-wise mark split, so you cannot plan by fixed weightage. A better approach is to rank topics by how quickly they turn into marks and how often similar topics appear in Odisha state-level papers.
Subject | Why it matters | Priority topics |
|---|---|---|
Odia | Rule-based questions that most candidates find familiar, so small errors cost rank | Sandhi, samasa, spelling, proverbs |
English | Grammar questions repeat in type, which makes practice efficient | Error spotting, tenses, voice and narration, synonyms |
General Knowledge | Widest area and hardest to finish, so selective reading is essential | Odisha GK, current affairs, polity basics, everyday science |
Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning | Decides speed in the paper and separates candidates at the top | Percentage, ratio, average, time and work, series, coding-decoding |
Basic Computer Literacy | Short, factual and easy to revise in the last two weeks | Fundamentals, shortcuts, internet and security terms |
Reliable study material
School textbooks first: Odisha Board and NCERT books up to Class 10 cover most general science, history, geography and polity questions at the right depth.
One grammar book per language: Use a single standard Odia grammar book and a single English grammar book, and revise them more than once rather than switching between many sources.
Official state sources for Odisha GK: Government press releases and department pages are the safest source for schemes and state facts.
Previous papers: Earlier Odisha police and OSSSC papers show the question style and depth expected in each subject.
Special Papers: Communication and Driver Posts
Constable (Civil) and Constable OISF candidates do not take a special paper. If you have also applied for Constable (Communication) or a driver post, prepare the extra paper alongside the common one.
Constable (Communication): Physics and Computer Science
Subject | Topics to cover |
|---|---|
Physics (+2 level) | Electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, electromagnetic induction and alternating current, electromagnetic waves, optics, dual nature of matter, atoms and nuclei, semiconductor electronics, communication systems |
Computer Science (+2 level) | Computer fundamentals, number systems, programming basics, algorithms and flowcharts, basic data structures, database concepts, networks, internet and cyber security |
Driver PMT and Firefighting Driver
Vehicle knowledge and maintenance: Engine, fuel, transmission, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, lubrication and pre-driving checks.
Traffic signals, road safety and rules: Traffic lights, road markings, hand signals, mandatory and cautionary signs, right of way, defensive driving and key provisions of motor vehicle law.
Is There a Syllabus for PM and PET?
No. The physical stage has no written syllabus. It has fixed standards: minimum height, weight and chest measurements, and timed or distance-based events (a 1.6 km run, long jump and shot put). These are qualifying, so they decide whether you stay in the race but add nothing to your merit score.
How to Cover the Syllabus
The plan below assumes about 4 to 5 hours of study a day. Stretch the phases if you have less time.
Weeks 1 to 4, foundations: Arithmetic basics (percentage, ratio, average), Odia and English grammar, and the first pass of Odisha GK. Read current affairs for 30 minutes daily and keep monthly notes.
Weeks 5 to 8, full coverage: Remaining arithmetic chapters, all reasoning types, Indian polity, geography and history, and one focused week on Basic Computer Literacy. Begin topic-wise tests after each chapter.
Weeks 9 to 10, speed building: Timed sectional tests of 20 to 25 questions, especially in arithmetic and reasoning. Revise Odia vocabulary and idioms twice a week.
Final phase, full-length practice: Two or three full mocks a week in the 100-question, 120-minute format, same-day analysis and error-log revision.
A sample daily study split
Block | Time | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Quant and reasoning | 90 minutes | One new chapter or 30 to 40 practice questions |
General Knowledge | 60 minutes | One static topic plus Odisha GK notes |
Current affairs | 30 minutes | Daily news reading and short notes |
Odia and English | 45 minutes | Alternate days: grammar rules on one day, vocabulary and practice on the next |
Revision | 30 minutes | Error log, formulas and computer terms |
Keep physical training separate from this split, ideally in the early morning, so that study and fitness do not compete for the same hours.
