OPSC Assistant Industries Officer Exam Pattern: Papers, Marks and Time

The OPSC Assistant Industries Officer exam pattern has three stages: a written examination with two papers, a personality test, and document verification. The Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) conducts the process, and the written exam is the stage that decides who is called for the personality test.

This page explains the pattern from the last verified cycle, Advertisement No. 8 of 2024-25, and what it means for how you spend your time. One caution applies throughout. The sources we could verify do not state the number of questions per paper, and they disagree on the marks for Paper I. We flag both points clearly rather than guess, and the official notification is the final word when a new one is released.

Paper I: General English, General Awareness and General Aptitude

Paper I is a two-hour general-ability paper. Most coaching sources report 100 marks, while one source reports 150. If you add the reported 300 marks for Paper II and 50 for the personality test, the 100-mark version gives a total of 450 and the 150-mark version gives 500. Both totals appear in secondary sources, so the discrepancy cannot be settled without the official notification.

Paper II: Basic Engineering

Paper II is the main paper. It carries 300 marks and runs for three hours, which is longer than Paper I and also three times as heavy on the commonly reported split. The post accepts a degree in any engineering discipline, so this paper is generally treated as a test of fundamentals shared across branches.

Number of questions and language

The question count per paper is not stated in the sources we could verify, so do not trust a precise figure from an unofficial page. Plan your timing in minutes per section instead, and update it when the notification lists the counts. The medium of the papers and the question type (objective or descriptive) should likewise be confirmed in the notification. Some sources describe the papers as multiple choice because negative marking is reported, but treat that as an inference until you read the official text.

Qualifying marks

Reports on the last cycle give these minimum qualifying percentages for the written examination.

Minimum qualifying marks

35 percent

30 percent

Qualifying marks are a minimum threshold. Being above them does not guarantee a call for the personality test, because candidates are shortlisted by rank in order of merit. In the last cycle the number shortlisted was reported as around 290 against 151 vacancies.

Marking scheme and negative marking

A negative mark of 25 percent of the marks allotted to a question was reported for each wrong answer in the written exam. In plain terms, you lose one-fourth of the question's marks for a wrong answer. The sources do not say whether unanswered questions are penalised, and the usual practice in objective exams is that they are not, so check the instructions printed in the question booklet.

What a wrong answer costs: an illustration

This example is illustrative and uses a simple one-mark question for clarity. If a question carries 1 mark, a correct answer gives you +1 and a wrong answer gives you -0.25. If you guess blindly among four options, your expected result is (0.25 x 1) minus (0.75 x 0.25), which is about +0.06. That is close to zero. If you can remove two options first, your expected result rises to about +0.38, and the guess becomes worthwhile. The same ratio holds for a question worth more marks.

  • Eliminate before you guess: A guess after removing two options has a clearly positive expected value.

  • Skip pure coin tosses: A blind guess is nearly neutral, so it is better to spend that time on a question you can solve.

  • Track your own accuracy: In mocks, note whether your guesses earn or lose marks.

What the pattern means for you

  • Paper II decides your rank: With the larger share of marks and the longer duration, study time should lean toward Basic Engineering, but never neglect Paper I.

  • Both papers carry qualifying marks: Check whether the 35 or 30 percent threshold applies to each paper or to the total, because a weak paper could end your chances even if the other is strong. This is not clear in the secondary sources, so read the notification closely.

  • Accuracy matters more than volume: With a 25 percent penalty, attempting everything is rarely the best plan. A high-accuracy attempt beats a high-volume one.

  • Branch advantage is limited: The paper is common to all engineering disciplines, so you gain by strengthening areas outside your own branch.

Personality test and document verification

The personality test carries 50 marks and, in the last cycle, assessed communication skills and professional knowledge. Candidates were called at roughly twice the number of vacancies, so a shortlisted candidate competed against about one other for each post.

Document verification follows. Carry original certificates for your degree, date of birth, category (where claimed), identity proof and any other document the notification names. For the last cycle, reports pointed to the OPSC office in Cuttack as the venue. Any mismatch between your application and your documents can put your candidature at risk, so prepare the file well before the call.

Final merit: what to check in the notification

We could not verify how the written marks and the interview marks are combined into the final merit list. The simplest reading of the reported pattern is that the written marks and the 50 interview marks together decide the final ranking, but the weightage and any normalisation rule should come from the notification, not from a blog. When it is released, note three things:

  1. Which marks count: Whether both papers count fully or one paper is only qualifying.

  2. Tie-break rule: What happens when two candidates have equal marks.

  3. Category rank lists: How reservation and women's posts are applied within each category.

Time management and exam-day strategy

Because the question counts are not confirmed, build your timing rule around sections. A workable approach for a two-hour general paper is to spend the first pass on questions you can answer quickly, mark the rest, and return for a second pass. For the three-hour engineering paper, solve short conceptual questions first and leave long numericals for later.

Paper

Suggested approach

Paper I, 2 hours

Start with English, which is fast to score, then aptitude, and finish with general awareness. Keep the last 10 minutes for review.

Paper II, 3 hours

Take two passes. Clear the topics you know best in the first pass, and return to numericals and weaker areas in the second.

These are practice suggestions, not official instructions. Practising in the same format is the only way to test them. You can attempt online tests for this exam on Testkart with timers and section-wise analysis, and then adjust your order of attempts based on where you lost marks.

Older pages and the official source

Older pages and coaching blogs may show a different Paper I marks split, an older age or fee detail, or an exam month that has since passed. Follow the official notification for every rule that affects your application. The OPSC website carries advertisements, notices, results and the recruitment calendar. As on 19 October 2026 we could not see a fresh advertisement for this post, so the pattern above is from the last verified cycle.
