SBI Apprentice Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Key Rules

SBI Apprentice eligibility is simple on paper: Indian graduates aged 20 to 28 can apply to be engaged as apprentices in State Bank of India under the Apprentices Act, 1961. The latest advertisement, CRPD/APPR/2026-27/07, fixed 1 April 2026 as the date for checking both age and qualification, and offered 7,150 seats across 34 states and union territories.

The rules that disqualify most applicants are not about marks or age, though. They are about earlier apprenticeships, work experience after graduation, the local language of your state and your credit record. This page explains every condition in the 2026 advertisement, shows the age window with relaxations, lists the state-wise languages and sets out what makes a candidate ineligible, so you can check yourself before the next notification.

Educational Qualification

You need a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university or institute. The advertisement does not ask for a specific stream or a minimum percentage, so a pass in any recognised bachelor's degree meets the academic condition.

  • Cut-off date: The qualification is checked as on 1 April 2026 for the 2026 cycle. If your degree was not complete by that date, do not assume you are eligible. Read the exact wording in the advertisement of the cycle you are applying for.

  • Any discipline: Arts, commerce, science, engineering and other graduates are all eligible on the academic condition.

  • Recognised institution: The degree must come from a university or institute recognised by the Government of India or its regulators.

  • Proof at engagement: Keep your degree certificate or provisional certificate and mark sheets ready for verification.

Postgraduates are not barred by the qualification rule itself. However, the experience rule below applies to everyone, so check it carefully if you have worked or trained after graduating.

Age Limit and Relaxation

You must be at least 20 years old and not more than 28 years old as on 1 April 2026. In date terms, you should have been born between 2 April 1998 and 1 April 2006, both dates inclusive.

The 2026 advertisement says the upper age limit is relaxed for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates as per Government of India guidelines, without printing the number of years. The table below shows the relaxation usually applied under central government rules. It is indicative only, so confirm it against the advertisement for your cycle.

No relaxation is shown for EWS candidates who do not have a disability. Ex-servicemen are not engaged under this scheme, so no ex-servicemen relaxation applies.

Earlier Apprenticeship and Work Experience

These two rules are where many otherwise eligible graduates lose their chance, often after clearing the test.

Earlier apprenticeship

Candidates who have already completed apprenticeship training under the Apprentices Act, 1961, or who are currently undergoing it, are not eligible. This applies whether the earlier apprenticeship was with SBI or with any other organisation. If you are registered on the NAPS portal for another engagement, check whether that counts as undergoing apprenticeship before you apply.

Work experience after graduation

Candidates who have training or job experience of one year or more after obtaining their educational qualification are not eligible. The rule is designed to keep the scheme open to fresh graduates.

  • Less than one year: Experience of under one year after graduation does not disqualify you.

  • One year or more: You are not eligible, even if the experience was in a different field.

  • Before graduation: The rule counts experience after the qualification, so part-time work during your degree is not covered by this wording.

Local Language Requirement by State

You must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding at least one specified language of the state you apply for. Candidates who studied that language in Class 10 or Class 12 and produce the mark sheet or certificate are exempt from the language test. Others take the test after qualifying the online exam, and those who fail it are not engaged.

Seats and languages can change in the next advertisement, so check them again before applying. The category-wise split of seats is on the SBI Apprentice exam overview.

Reservation benefits depend on holding the right certificate in the right format and date range. Category cannot be changed after you register.

  • EWS: An Income and Asset Certificate for financial year 2025-26, valid for 2026-27, is required. Candidates who do not have it by the closing date of registration must apply as General. EWS seats are tentative and subject to government directions and pending litigation.

  • Medical fitness: Engagement depends on being found medically fit.

  • Aadhaar: Aadhaar is needed before engagement, with an alternative identity document allowed in certain north-eastern states.

  • One application: If you submit more than one application, only the last valid and complete one is kept, and fees paid for the others are forfeited.

  • Experienced graduates: Anyone with one year or more of training or job experience after graduation.

  • Ex-servicemen: Ex-servicemen and disabled ex-servicemen are not engaged under this scheme.

  • Defaulters: Candidates with unresolved loan or credit card defaults.

  • Age or degree outside the window: Candidates born outside the date-of-birth window after any relaxation, or without a completed degree as on the cut-off date.
