SBI Clerk (Junior Associate) Eligibility 2026: Age Limit, Qualification and Other Requirements

Most SBI Clerk eligibility pages cover age and qualification and stop there. A few conditions that decide whether an application actually goes through the local language requirement tied to your chosen state, who's specifically barred from applying, and even a credit-history clause at the joining stage get far less attention despite being just as important. This guide covers the complete SBI Clerk eligibility criteria for 2026, including the parts that are easy to miss.

SBI Clerk Age Limit

Minimum and Maximum Age

Candidates must be between 20 and 28 years old, calculated as on the cut-off date specified in the notification 1 April 2026 for the current cycle. This means your date of birth needs to fall within a specific window (roughly 2 April 1998 to 1 April 2006 for this cycle), which is worth checking precisely against the notification rather than calculating independently.

Age Relaxation

Category

Age Relaxation

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

3 years

SC / ST

5 years

PwBD (General/EWS)

10 years

PwBD (OBC)

13 years

PwBD (SC/ST)

Ex-Servicemen / Disabled Ex-Servicemen

Actual period of service in Defence + 3 years (up to a maximum age of 50 years)

A few details worth noting:

  • OBC relaxation applies only to the Non-Creamy Layer. Creamy Layer candidates must apply under the General category and are not eligible for OBC-based age or reservation benefits.

  • EWS candidates need a valid Income and Asset Certificate issued by the Government of India to claim the category's benefits.

  • PwBD relaxation varies by disability type and category combination (VI, HI, Locomotor Disability, and multiple disabilities each have specific classifications), so the exact relaxation depends on both your disability category and your reservation category together.

SBI Clerk Educational Qualification

Accepted Qualification

A graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government, satisfies the educational requirement. Unlike specialist banking posts, there's no subject-specific requirement a science, commerce, arts, or professional degree all qualify equally.

Final-Year Students and Integrated Dual Degree Holders

Candidates in their final year or final semester of graduation may apply provisionally, but must produce proof of having passed the graduation examination by the date specified in the notification (31 December 2026 for this cycle). Failing to do so cancels the provisional selection.

Candidates holding an Integrated Dual Degree (IDD) certificate can also meet the qualification requirement, provided the date of passing the IDD falls on or before the same cut-off date.

Ex-Servicemen Route

Matriculate Ex-Servicemen who have obtained the Indian Army Special Certificate of Education (or the equivalent Navy or Air Force certificate) after completing at least 15 years of service are separately eligible under this provision, provided the certificate is dated on or before the notified cut-off date. This route doesn't require a graduation degree, making it a distinct eligibility path from the standard qualification requirement.

Local Language Proficiency Requirement

This is a part of eligibility that's easy to underweight until application time. Candidates applying for a particular state or UT are expected to be able to read, write, speak, and understand the specified local language of that state. If you didn't study that language as a subject in Class 10 or Class 12, you'll need to clear the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) after Mains and this connects directly back to which state you choose to apply for. Picking a state purely because it has more vacancies, without considering the language requirement, can create an avoidable hurdle later in the process.

Who Is Not Eligible for SBI Clerk

A few disqualification clauses apply regardless of whether age, qualification, and nationality criteria are otherwise met:

  • Current employees of SBI in the clerical cadre are not eligible to apply under this recruitment.

  • Former SBI clerical cadre employees who resigned from the Bank are also barred from reapplying under this project.

  • Candidates with an adverse report regarding character, antecedents, or moral turpitude are not eligible, based on the Bank's assessment during the selection process.

  • Credit history can affect final joining, not just eligibility. Candidates with outstanding adverse CIBIL status may need to resolve it or produce a No Objection Certificate from the lender before the date of joining, even after clearing all exam stages otherwise, the offer of appointment can be withdrawn.

That last point in particular is rarely mentioned on standard eligibility pages, but it's a real condition that can affect a candidate at the very last stage of an otherwise successful selection.

One State, One Attempt

  • Candidates can apply for vacancies in only one State or Union Territory per recruitment cycle.

  • Candidates can appear for the test only once under a given recruitment project submitting multiple applications within the same cycle can lead to disqualification.

  • There is no fixed limit on the number of times a candidate can apply across different yearly cycles, as long as age and qualification criteria are met each time.

Quick Eligibility Checklist

  • Your date of birth falls within the notified age window (with relaxation applied, if applicable).

  • You hold, or will hold by the qualification cut-off date, a graduation degree in any discipline.

  • You meet the nationality criteria and hold supporting documentation if applicable.

  • You can read, write, speak, and understand the local language of the state you plan to apply for or are prepared for the LLPT.

  • You are not currently or formerly employed in SBI's clerical cadre.

  • Your credit history has no unresolved adverse status that could affect joining.

If all of these apply to you, you meet the baseline eligibility for SBI Clerk 2026. From here, the focus shifts to preparation see our guides on the SBI Clerk exam pattern and SBI Clerk syllabus to plan your study approach.
