SBI PO 2026: Eligibility Guide

SBI PO eligibility rests on four checks: Indian citizenship, a graduation degree in any discipline, an age between 21 and 30 years with category relaxations, and a limit on the number of attempts. State Bank of India set these conditions in its 2026-27 notification, Advertisement No. CRPD/PO/2026-27/09, for 1,500 Probationary Officer vacancies.

Two dates decide most cases this cycle: age is counted as on 1 April 2026, and your graduation must be passed on or before 30 September 2026. This page explains each rule, shows the date-of-birth window and relaxation table, covers the attempt limits and certificates, and lists the mistakes that most often cost candidates their place at document verification.

Educational Qualification

You need a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognised university, or any qualification the Central Government recognises as equivalent. The notification states no minimum percentage, so a pass in graduation is enough to apply.

Final-year students

Students in the final year or final semester of graduation may apply provisionally. If called for interview, you must produce proof that you passed on or before 30 September 2026. Candidates with an Integrated Dual Degree must have their date of passing on or before the same date.

How the date of passing is read

SBI treats the date on your mark sheet or provisional certificate as your date of passing. If your university posts results online, a certificate from the university showing the date the result went up on its website is accepted as the date of passing. Collect this certificate early if your final mark sheet will arrive late.

Professional degrees

Candidates with medical, engineering, Chartered Accountant or Cost Accountant qualifications are eligible. Your discipline does not change your eligibility or your exam.

SBI PO Age Limit

You must be at least 21 and not more than 30 years old as on 1 April 2026. For the general limit, that means you were born not earlier than 2 April 1996 and not later than 1 April 2005.

The maximum ages are worked out from the 30-year limit plus the stated relaxation. Relaxations are not cumulative, so you cannot add two of them together. The ex-servicemen relaxation applies to those released on completion of assignment, including those whose assignment ends within one year of the last date of application, other than by dismissal, discharge for misconduct or inefficiency, or invaliding.

Examples of the age rule

  • Born on 1 April 2005: you turn 21 on 1 April 2026 and are eligible.

  • Born on 2 April 2005: you are one day short of 21 on the reference date and are not eligible this cycle.

  • UR candidate born on 1 April 1996: outside the window by one day and not eligible.

  • OBC candidate born in June 1993: within the 33-year limit and eligible, provided you hold a valid non-creamy layer certificate.

No restriction

Only appearing in the Main exam counts as a chance. Appearing in Prelims alone does not. In years when SBI held only one written exam with no Prelims, appearing in that exam counted as a chance. If you have already used your maximum chances, you cannot apply.

Keep a simple record of every cycle in which you sat Mains. Repeat candidates often lose count, and a wrong declaration can cost you your candidature later.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Citizenship: the notification invites applications from eligible Indian citizens.

  • Posting: selected candidates may be posted anywhere in India, and SBI may also depute them to associates or subsidiaries.

  • Medical fitness: appointment depends on being declared medically fit as per the bank's requirements.

  • Character and antecedents: candidates with adverse reports on character, antecedents or moral turpitude are not eligible, and you must disclose pending criminal cases at interview.

  • Serving employees: those in government, PSUs or nationalised banks should bring a No Objection Certificate to the interview and a discharge certificate on selection.

  • Credit history: the original notification had a CIBIL clause, but a corrigendum dated 1 July 2026 removed it from this recruitment.

Older pages may still list the CIBIL condition for 2026, so follow the official notification and its corrigendum.

Category Certificates and Reservation Rules

Category

What you need

OBC (non-creamy layer)

Central Government format certificate with the non-creamy layer clause, issued between 1 April 2026 and the date of interview

EWS

Income and Asset Certificate for financial year 2025-26, valid for 2026-27, in the Government of India format

SC/ST

Caste certificate in the Government of India format

PwBD

Disability certificate from a competent authority, dated on or before the last date of registration

Ex-servicemen

Service and release documents supporting the relaxation

Creamy layer OBC candidates must apply as UR and get no OBC relaxation. PwBD reservation is horizontal at 4 percent and needs a benchmark disability of at least 40 percent. Under a December 2025 government memorandum cited in the notification, a disability certificate marked "likely to improve" under temporary disability does not qualify for reservation.

Your category cannot be changed after you submit the application, in either direction. If your certificate is not in the prescribed format on the day of document verification, you will not be allowed to attend the interview.

PwBD Categories, Scribe and Compensatory Time

The post is identified as suitable for four groups of benchmark disabilities, each with its own vacancies: visual impairment (blind and low vision), hearing impairment (hard of hearing), locomotor disability (including cerebral palsy, leprosy cured, dwarfism, acid attack victims and some spinal conditions), and the clause d and e group covering mild autism spectrum disorder, mental illness and multiple disabilities.

  • Scribe for 40 percent or more disability: available if you have a physical limitation in writing, including speed. Opt for it in the application form, because later requests may not be accepted.

  • Compensatory time: eligible candidates get 20 minutes for every hour of the exam, whether or not they use a scribe.

  • Below 40 percent disability with writing difficulty: a scribe or compensatory time is possible with a certificate from a government healthcare institution in the prescribed format. Your own scribe must hold a qualification one step below yours.

  • Scribe conduct: a scribe who answers independently or gives hints leads to cancellation, and the scribe cannot be a candidate in the same exam.

How and When SBI Verifies Eligibility

Admission to Prelims and Mains is provisional. A call letter does not mean your eligibility has been accepted. SBI checks original documents mainly after shortlisting for the interview, but it reserves the right to verify them at any stage, including Prelims, Mains, the psychometric test, medical examination and joining. Online Aadhaar verification may also happen at different stages, so keep a valid Aadhaar card ready.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Results after the cut-off: graduates whose date of passing falls after 30 September 2026.

  • Age outside the window: anyone under 21 or over the relaxed upper limit on 1 April 2026.

  • Attempts exhausted: UR, EWS or OBC candidates who have used their maximum Mains chances.

  • Wrong category claims: creamy layer OBC candidates who apply as OBC, or anyone without a valid certificate in the right format.

  • False information: any wrong or suppressed detail found at any stage, even after appointment, leads to cancellation or termination.

  • Multiple applications: only the last valid application is kept, and multiple appearances at interview or joining lead to rejection.

Fee and Documents in Brief

The fee was Rs. 750 for UR, EWS and OBC candidates and nil for SC, ST and PwBD candidates, payable online only. You need a valid email ID and mobile number, scanned photo, signature, left thumb impression and a hand-written declaration, plus a live photo taken during registration. Original documents are checked at the interview stage, and SBI may verify them at any stage.

Eligibility Checklist for the Next Cycle

  1. Work out your age on the likely reference date: SBI used 1 April 2026 for this cycle, but confirm the date in each new notification.

  2. Count your Mains appearances: compare them with your category limit.

  3. Check your result timeline: if you are in your final year, confirm when your university will publish results.

  4. Renew certificates: OBC and EWS certificates must fall within the dates the notification specifies.

  5. Prepare scans in the right sizes: mistakes in uploads are a common reason for rejection.

Verify every condition in the SBI Careers current openings page, where the advertisement and corrigendum are posted.
