SSB Head Constable Syllabus 2026: Part I and Trade-wise Topics

The SSB Head Constable syllabus has two parts. Part I is a common general paper of 50 marks on General Knowledge, Mathematics, Reasoning and General English or Hindi. Part II is a technical paper of 100 marks on the trade you applied for: Communication, Electrician, Veterinary or Steward in the current Sashastra Seema Bal Head Constable (Non-GD) 2025 cycle.

SSB names these subjects in its advertisement but does not publish a detailed topic-wise syllabus for the HC trades. The topic lists below are built from the subjects named in the advertisement, the qualification each trade demands, and questions asked in previous CAPF trade papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list. The page also covers the Ministerial syllabus, physical standards that work like a syllabus for the PET, and a week-by-week plan.

This structure is as reported from the 2025 cycle advertisement; the subject-wise split inside Part I is not fixed officially. For the marking rules and qualifying marks, see the SSB Head Constable exam pattern page.

What this means for you:

  • Split your study time about two to one: Roughly two hours on the trade subject for every hour on general sections matches how the marks are weighted.

  • Use Part I to protect your total: General sections are easier to score in quickly, so aim for high accuracy there and save time for technical questions.

  • Plan for 150 questions in 180 minutes: That is about 72 seconds per question, so long calculations need shortcuts.

Key Changes to Know

  • Trades have changed: The 2025 cycle covers Communication, Electrician, Veterinary and Steward. Mechanic, which had a large share in 2023, is not in this cycle, so ignore Mechanic syllabus pages for now.

  • Technical part carries the most weight: Part II is worth 100 of 150 marks, so your trade syllabus is the core of preparation.

  • Do not mix up patterns: Many older pages show a 100-mark, four-section paper with 25 questions each. That fits Constable and Ministerial papers, not the HC trade posts.

  • Computer basics may appear: Some reports list basic computer knowledge within Part I. Add a short revision of computer fundamentals to be safe.

Part I Syllabus: General Subjects

Part I is common to every trade. It is pitched around the Class 10 to Class 12 level and rewards speed more than depth. With about 12 to 13 questions per subject, every topic is small, so cover breadth first.

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

General Knowledge

Current affairs, Indian history and freedom struggle, Indian and world geography, Indian polity and Constitution, economy basics, general science, sports, awards, books and authors, important days, SSB history and border states

Vilom, paryayvachi and muhavare

High-Weight Areas in Part I

In general sections of CAPF trade papers, arithmetic and current affairs usually give the most questions per hour of study. Static GK about SSB itself is also worth one evening: when it was raised, which borders it guards, and that it works under the Ministry of Home Affairs. Choose English or Hindi based on which language you score better in during practice, not on habit.

Part II Syllabus: Technical Subject by Trade

Part II tests the knowledge your qualification was meant to give you. The level matches Class 12 science, an ITI course or a two to three-year diploma, depending on the trade.

PET, PST and Skill Test: Is There a Syllabus?

The physical tests have no written syllabus, but they have fixed standards you must prepare for. They come before the written exam, so fitness has to be built in parallel with study.

Test

What is tested

PET (male)

1.6 km race in 6 minutes 30 seconds

PET (female)

800 m race in 4 minutes

PST

Height for all; chest for male candidates; trade and category-wise standards apply

Skill test

HC (Electrician) only: 50 marks, qualifying, 60% needed

The Electrician skill test is practical. Expect tasks such as wiring a circuit, identifying tools and components, testing with instruments, and following safety steps. There is no interview in this recruitment. PST figures by trade are on the SSB Head Constable eligibility page.

Head Constable (Ministerial) Syllabus

Head Constable (Ministerial) is a separate clerical recruitment (Advt. 338/RC/SSB/HC(Min)/2020). Its CBT was held on 7 July 2026, with 100 questions for 100 marks in 2 hours, as reported. It has no technical part.

How to Cover the SSB HC Syllabus

A 16-week plan works for most candidates who already hold the trade qualification. Shorten it if the written exam is notified sooner, but keep the order.

  1. Weeks 1 to 6, foundation: Rebuild Part II basics from your Class 12, ITI or diploma texts. In parallel, do 45 minutes of arithmetic and 30 minutes of current affairs daily. Keep running four days a week.

  2. Weeks 3 to 8, Part I breadth: Add reasoning and your chosen language. Make one-page notes for each GK area and a formula sheet for mathematics.

  3. Weeks 7 to 12, topic tests: Take topic-wise tests in your trade subject and 20-minute sectional tests in Part I. Log every mistake with the reason.

  4. Weeks 11 to 16, full papers: Attempt full 150-question papers in three hours, analyse the same day, and revise from your error log.

Sources to Study From

  • Part II for Communication and Veterinary: NCERT Class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology textbooks are the most reliable base, because the qualification itself is set at that level.

  • Part II for Electrician: Your ITI trade theory books (NIMI or equivalent) cover almost every topic, including safety and instruments.

  • Part II for Steward: The textbooks from your catering or kitchen management diploma, plus FSSAI food safety basics.

  • Part I: NCERT Class 6 to 10 for static GK and science, a standard arithmetic practice book, and a monthly current affairs compilation.

Common Syllabus Mistakes

  • Over-preparing Part I: Many candidates spend most of their time on GK and reasoning, which carry only 50 marks together, and neglect the 100-mark trade paper.

  • Studying the wrong trade list: Mechanic and Ministerial topic lists are often mixed into HC pages. Check that every topic you study belongs to your own trade.

  • Ignoring the diploma side of Communication: PCM candidates sometimes skip electronics and networking, but questions can come from both routes into the trade.

  • Leaving the run for the end: PET comes before the written test. A failed run means your syllabus preparation never gets tested.
