SSC JE Mechanical Eligibility 2026: Qualification and Age Limit

SSC JE Mechanical eligibility depends on the post and organisation you apply for. The Staff Selection Commission recruits Junior Engineer (Mechanical) and Junior Engineer (Electrical and Mechanical) through one exam, but each organisation sets its own qualification rules. Some accept a diploma on its own, while others ask diploma holders for two years of relevant experience.

For the 2026 cycle, age is counted as on 1 August 2026, and your qualification must be complete by the application closing date of 22 September 2026. This page covers the educational qualification for each mechanical post, the age limits and relaxations, nationality rules, BRO conditions and the most common reasons candidates are found ineligible. Use it to check your position before the next notification as well, since the rules tend to change slightly from cycle to cycle.

Educational Qualification for SSC JE Mechanical

Every JE (Mechanical) or JE (Electrical and Mechanical) post requires a degree or diploma in Mechanical Engineering, or in Electrical Engineering for E and M posts, from a recognised university, institute or board. The exact combination of degree, diploma and experience varies by organisation.

  • Result must be declared: Your qualifying result must be out by the closing date. A result still under process on that date does not count.

  • Final-year students: If your final result is not declared by 22 September 2026, you are not eligible for this cycle. Final-year students can apply only if the result comes before the closing date.

  • Original documents later: Selected candidates must produce mark sheets for all years or semesters and the degree, diploma or provisional certificate at document verification.

  • Subject choice: In the application form, you pick the paper that matches your qualification. Mechanical candidates choose Part C. This choice cannot be changed later.

Post-Wise Qualification and Age Limit

Two notes in the notice matter for mechanical candidates. First, candidates opting for JE (Mechanical) are also eligible for JE (Electrical and Mechanical). Second, the CPWD JE (Electrical) post lists a mechanical diploma as an accepted qualification, but it is an Electrical post with its own paper, so check which subject paper you must take before choosing it.

The organisation list changes between cycles. In the 2025 cycle, Farakka Barrage Project had a JE (Mechanical) post, while the 2026 notice lists only Electrical and Civil posts there. The tentative vacancy list reported in October 2026 shows JE (Mechanical) posts in CWC, CWPRS and DGQA-Naval, but the 2026 notice's qualification table does not list a Mechanical post for CWPRS. Confirm such cases in the final post list on the SSC website.

Experience Requirement for Diploma Holders

Diploma holders need to read the experience clause carefully, because it decides which posts you can actually take.

  • Posts that accept a diploma alone: CWC JE (Mechanical) accepts a diploma without experience.

  • Posts that need two years of experience: DGQA-Naval, MES and BRO require two years of relevant experience for three-year diploma holders. Degree holders do not need experience for these posts.

  • When experience counts: Experience must be gained after you obtain the qualification. Internships, training, research or project work done as part of the course do not count.

  • Proof: Keep an experience certificate on the employer's letterhead that states the dates and the nature of work, because it is checked at document verification.

SSC JE Mechanical Age Limit

Age is calculated as on 1 August 2026. The date of birth recorded in your matriculation or secondary school certificate is the only one SSC accepts, and later requests to change it are not considered.

Upper age limit

The notice contains further relaxation codes, such as those for certain central government employees and other specific groups, that are not reproduced here. Check the full age relaxation table in the official notice if you belong to any special category. Relaxation certificates must be in the prescribed format and are checked at document verification.

PwBD Suitability

Not every post is identified as suitable for every type of disability. The notice states that JE (Civil), JE (Mechanical) and JE (Electrical) posts are not identified as suitable for visually handicapped candidates, and BRO posts are outside the PwBD suitability table. Candidates with other benchmark disabilities should check the post-wise suitability table before choosing posts.

Nationality and Other Conditions

  • Indian citizens: Eligible without any extra certificate.

  • Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan: Eligible, but need a certificate of eligibility from the Government of India before an offer of appointment.

  • Persons of Indian origin: Those who migrated from specified countries, including Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and certain East African countries, with the intention of permanently settling in India, are eligible with a certificate of eligibility.

  • BRO posts: Only male candidates are eligible, and they must meet BRO's physical efficiency test and medical standards. BRO allocation is on merit-cum-preference.

  • Date of birth record: Only the date of birth in your matriculation or secondary certificate is accepted, so make sure your application matches it exactly.

How Cross-Eligibility Works for Mechanical Candidates

The Electrical and Mechanical posts share a single merit list, so your post options depend on what you choose in the form and on your qualification.

  • JE (Mechanical) and JE (E and M): If you opt for JE (Mechanical), you are automatically eligible for JE (Electrical and Mechanical) posts in MES and BRO, subject to their qualification and experience rules.

  • Subject paper is fixed: You must sit the paper you chose in the form. A mechanical candidate takes Part C, and this cannot be switched later to Part B.

  • Preferences decide allocation: Final posts are allotted on merit and the preferences you submit. List only the posts you are genuinely eligible for and willing to join.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Result after the closing date: Candidates whose final degree or diploma result came after 22 September 2026.

  • Diploma without experience for experience posts: Diploma holders who lack two years of post-qualification experience cannot be selected for DGQA-Naval, MES or BRO posts.

  • Over-age candidates: Candidates born before the window for their category and post, after applying the relaxation.

  • Women for BRO posts: BRO JE posts are reserved for male candidates.

  • Unrecognised qualifications: Degrees or diplomas from institutions or boards that are not recognised.

Keep these ready for document verification:

  • Educational proof: Mark sheets and the degree, diploma or provisional certificate.

  • Age proof: Matriculation or secondary school certificate.

  • Category proof: SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwBD or Ex-Servicemen certificates in the prescribed format.

  • Experience certificate: For diploma holders applying to posts that need experience.

Next Steps After Checking Eligibility

Once you know which posts you qualify for, focus on the exam itself. Paper I is qualifying and Paper II alone decides merit, so the mechanical engineering syllabus needs the most attention.

If you are a diploma holder with less than two years of experience, your realistic options this cycle may be limited to posts like CWC. You can still use the year to prepare thoroughly. Testkart's SSC JE Mechanical online tests let you practise Part C subject by subject and track accuracy, and Testkart previous year question sets show how SSC frames questions in each subject.

Always verify the final post list, qualification table and age relaxation codes in the latest notice. Official SSC website: https://ssc.gov.in/
