SSC Selection Post Eligibility 2026: Age, Education
SSC Selection Post eligibility depends on three things: the qualification level you are applying for, your age on a fixed reference date, and conditions such as nationality and documents. Because one phase bundles posts for Class 10, Class 12 and graduate candidates, the rules differ from post to post.
This guide explains the criteria as seen in the Phase XIV (2026) notification and the standard central government rules behind them. It is meant to help you shortlist posts, not to replace the notification. Always read the official notice for your phase before applying.

Minimum age | 18 years for most posts, with a few posts higher |

Educational Qualification
The qualification you hold decides which posts you can pick. You cannot apply for a post above your level, and the qualification must be complete by the date given in the notification.
Level | Qualification required | Examples of posts seen in recent phases |
|---|---|---|
Matriculation | Class 10 pass from a recognised board | Multi-tasking, office and laboratory attendant posts |
Higher Secondary | Class 12 pass from a recognised board | Lower division clerk, data entry operator, junior secretariat assistant |
Graduate and above | Bachelor's degree from a recognised university | Assistant, research assistant, statistical assistant, inspector and similar posts |
These examples are indicative. The actual list differs by phase, department and region, so check the post-wise table of the notification.
Result and certificate rules
Result deadline: Candidates who have not yet got their final certificate must usually show that they passed the exam on or before the cut-off date. Waiting for results does not normally qualify you.
Specific disciplines: Some posts, such as technical and engineering posts, ask for a particular degree or diploma. Read the post description closely.
Experience: Where experience is required, it normally counts only after you obtained the required qualification. Internships and training during study are not counted.
Age Limit
Age is calculated on a reference date given in the notification. For Phase XIV, the reference date was 1 January 2026. Each post lists an age bracket with matching date-of-birth limits, so match your own birth date against the post you want.
Typical age bracket | Common for |
|---|---|
18 to 25 years | Many Matriculation-level posts |
18 to 27 years | Many Higher Secondary posts |
18 to 30 years | Many graduate-level posts |
Other brackets such as 20 to 30 or 21 to 27 | Specific technical and departmental posts |
Only the date of birth on your Matriculation or equivalent certificate is accepted, and it cannot be corrected later. If your certificate and your application differ, resolve it before you apply.
Age Relaxation
Upper age limits are relaxed for reserved categories as per central government rules.
Category | Upper age relaxation |
|---|---|
SC / ST | 5 years |
OBC | 3 years |
Persons with benchmark disabilities (unreserved) | 10 years |
Persons with benchmark disabilities (OBC) | 13 years |
Persons with benchmark disabilities (SC/ST) | 15 years |
Ex-servicemen | 3 years after deducting military service, as per notification |
Other relaxations, such as for certain government employees, widows or divorced women, may apply to specific posts. These are indicative figures based on standard rules. Verify the final numbers in the notification before applying.
Nationality and Other Conditions
Citizenship: A candidate must be an Indian citizen. Limited exceptions for certain persons of Indian origin or from specified countries are described in the notification.
Physical and medical standards: Some posts, such as field or security posts, state physical or medical requirements.
Skill requirements: Data entry and clerical posts may need a typing or computer test after the written exam.
Region choice: You choose regions in your application. Rules on residence differ by post, so check them.
Category certificates: SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), EWS, PwBD and ex-servicemen candidates need valid certificates at document verification. Without proof, you are considered under the unreserved category if eligible.
Who Is Not Eligible
Under-qualified candidates: Anyone who has not completed the qualification by the cut-off date.
Over-age or under-age candidates: Those outside the age bracket of the post, even by a single day.
Candidates with mismatched records: A date of birth or name that differs between the application and the certificate.
Applicants to posts above their level: For example, a 12th pass candidate applying for a graduate post.
Candidates with an invalid category claim: Reservation benefits need a valid certificate in the prescribed format.
Application Fee and Documents
In Phase XIV the fee was Rs. 100 for General and OBC male candidates, and women, SC, ST, persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen were exempt. Each post you apply for can need a separate application and fee. Keep ready your Class 10 certificate, qualification proof, category certificates, photograph and signature. A fuller walkthrough of dates, fee and the process is on the SSC Selection Post exam overview.
