SSC Stenographer Eligibility 2026: Age, Education, Relaxation

SSC Stenographer eligibility for Grade C and Grade D is simple on paper: Class 12 pass, a fixed age window, Indian nationality and stenography skill. The details are where candidates slip, such as the date by which your Class 12 result must be declared, the exact date-of-birth window and which age relaxation applies to which post.

This page sets out the 2026 conditions from the Staff Selection Commission notice dated 24 April 2026, explains how to check your own age, and lists the common reasons applications fail. Eligibility is judged as on 1 August 2026 for both education and age.

Educational qualification

You must have passed Class 12 or an equivalent examination from a recognised board or university on or before 1 August 2026. The word passed matters: your result must have been declared by that date, so candidates still waiting for a result on that day are not eligible in this cycle.

  • Any stream: The notice asks for Class 12 or equivalent and does not restrict the stream, so Arts, Commerce and Science candidates can all apply.

  • Open or distance learning: Qualifications obtained through open or distance learning must be recognised under the applicable rules.

  • Equivalence: If your qualification is not a standard Class 12 certificate, you will need an equivalence certificate at document verification.

  • Skill requirement: Only candidates with stenography skills should apply. The skill test later checks this, and a candidate who cannot meet the speed will not qualify.

Check the exact wording for your case in the official notice before applying.

Age limit

Age is counted as on 1 August 2026. The upper limit is higher for Grade C than for Grade D, so a candidate who is too old for one post may still be eligible for the other.

Post

Age range

Born between

Stenographer Grade C

18 to 30 years

2 August 1996 and 1 August 2008

Stenographer Grade D

18 to 27 years

2 August 1999 and 1 August 2008

How to check your age quickly

  1. Take your date of birth from your matriculation or equivalent certificate. SSC goes by the date recorded there.

  2. Check that it falls inside the window for your post in the table above.

  3. If you are above the upper limit, add the relaxation for your category and check again.

  4. Keep the certificate ready, because the date of birth is verified at the document verification stage.

Example: A general category candidate born on 15 March 1997 is 29 years old on 1 August 2026. This candidate is within the limit for Grade C but above the limit for Grade D, since the Grade D window starts on 2 August 1999.

Age relaxation

The upper age limit is relaxed for the categories below. The relaxation is added to the upper limit, not to the lower limit.

Category

Upper age relaxation

SC and ST

5 years

OBC

3 years

PwBD (UR and EWS)

10 years

PwBD (OBC)

13 years

PwBD (SC and ST)

15 years

Ex-servicemen

3 years after deducting the military service rendered

Defence personnel disabled in operations

3 years (8 years for SC and ST)

Central government civilian employees with at least 3 years of regular service on the closing date

Up to 40 years (up to 45 years for SC and ST)

Widows, divorced or judicially separated women who have not remarried

Up to 35 years (up to 40 years for SC and ST)

The last two relaxations are available only for the posts the notice specifies, so read the notice for the posts you intend to choose. Sons, daughters and dependents of ex-servicemen do not get any age relaxation. The relaxation is granted only if you claim it and produce the certificate when asked.

Nationality and other conditions

  • Citizenship: Candidates must be citizens of India. Subjects of Nepal or Bhutan, and certain persons of Indian origin migrating from listed countries, may also apply, but they need an eligibility certificate from the Government of India before any offer of appointment.

  • Health: Candidates must be in good mental and bodily health. Medical standards are checked by the user departments after the result.

  • One application only: Submit a single application. Multiple applications can lead to rejection and cancellation of candidature.

  • All-India liability: Selected candidates can be posted anywhere in India.

  • Language choice: You choose English or Hindi for the skill test while applying. Candidates who opt for Hindi must learn English stenography after appointment, and the reverse applies for English.

Special conditions for ex-servicemen and PwBD candidates

Ex-servicemen

Vacancies reserved for ex-servicemen exist only in Grade D. Specific conditions apply, including the length of service and the nature of discharge. Matriculate ex-servicemen need at least 15 years of service and are eligible only for the Grade D posts reserved for them.

Persons with benchmark disabilities

The notice identifies the posts as suitable for certain disability categories and lists the functional requirements in its sections on suitability. Pick the correct PwBD category while applying, because it cannot be changed later. Upload the disability certificate in the prescribed format.

Who is not eligible

  • Class 12 result awaited on 1 August 2026: The result must be declared by the cut-off date.

  • Born outside the date-of-birth window: This applies after adding any relaxation you can prove.

  • No documents for a claimed relaxation: An unproven category or relaxation claim can lead to cancellation.

  • Duplicate applicants: Candidates who submit more than one application risk rejection.

  • Candidates unable to meet skill test speed: They may apply, but they will not clear the skill test.

Fee and documents in brief

The application fee is Rs. 100. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and eligible ex-servicemen are exempt. Keep your Class 12 certificate, date-of-birth proof, category certificate, photo ID and, if relevant, disability, ex-servicemen or no-objection certificates ready.
