UCEED Eligibility 2027: Age, Class 12 and Attempts

UCEED eligibility is decided by three conditions: your date of birth, the year you first appeared for Class XII, and the number of times you have already taken the exam. IIT Bombay, which conducts UCEED 2027 on 17 January 2027 for B.Des admission at seven IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur, requires every candidate, including foreign nationals, to meet all three at the same time.

Two points surprise many students. First, UCEED is open to every stream: Science, Commerce, and Arts and Humanities. Second, being eligible to take the exam is not the same as being eligible for every B.Des seat, because three institutes admit only students with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. This page explains both sets of rules, with examples, so you can check your position before the late-fee registration deadline of 6 November 2026.

Examples

  • Born 15 September 2002, OBC-NCL: Not eligible, because the birth date is before 1 October 2002.

  • Born 1 October 2002, OPEN: Eligible on age, since the date is exactly on the cut-off.

  • Born 20 March 2000, SC: Eligible on age, because the SC cut-off is 1 October 1997.

There is no minimum age. In practice, the Class XII condition sets the lower limit, as you must have appeared for Class XII in 2026 or be appearing in 2027. The date of birth is checked against your proof of age, such as the Class X certificate, passport or birth certificate.

Class XII Qualifying Examination Rules

This is the condition most often misunderstood, so read each point carefully.

Year of first appearance

  • Eligible: Students who appeared for Class XII (or equivalent) for the first time in 2026, and students appearing for the first time in 2027.

  • Not eligible: Students who first appeared in 2025 or any earlier year, even if they later improved their marks or re-appeared.

  • Exception: If your board declared its 2024-25 Class XII results on or after 30 September 2025, students of that board who appeared in 2025 are eligible, provided they meet the other criteria.

  • Withheld results: If your board declared 2024-25 results before 30 September 2025 and your own result was withheld, you are not eligible under the exception.

What counts as appearing

For UCEED, the year of appearance is the year in which your board declared the Class XII result, whether or not a physical exam was held. It counts even if your individual result was withheld.

Streams and subjects

Science, Commerce, and Arts and Humanities students can all take UCEED. There is no required subject combination and no minimum percentage stated in the official eligibility rules for the exam. Subject rules apply later, at the B.Des admission stage, and differ by institute.

Examples

  • Commerce student appearing in Class XII in 2027: Eligible to take UCEED 2027.

  • Science student who passed Class XII in 2026 and took a gap year: Eligible, as the first appearance was in 2026.

  • Student who first appeared in 2025 and re-appeared in 2026: Not eligible, unless the 2025 board exception applies.

Accepted Qualifying Examinations

The following are accepted as equivalent to Class XII for UCEED:

  • Central and state boards: The final 10+2 exam of any central or state board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

  • Intermediate or pre-university: The intermediate or two-year pre-university exam of a board or university recognised by the AIU.

  • NDA: The final exam of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

  • NIOS: The senior secondary exam of the National Institute of Open Schooling with at least five subjects.

  • Other recognised boards: Any public school, board or university exam in India or abroad recognised by the AIU or UGC as equivalent to 10+2.

  • Vocational: The H.S.C. vocational examination.

  • International qualifications: GCE Advanced (A) Level from London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka, the Cambridge High School Certificate, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma.

Special cases

  • Boards outside India or not listed: You need a certificate from the AIU confirming that your exam is equivalent to Class XII.

  • Non-public Class XII exam: If your Class XII exam is not a public exam, you must have passed at least one public board or pre-university exam earlier.

  • Three-year diploma: A diploma of at least three years recognised by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education is accepted for the exam. However, participating institutes may not accept it for B.Des admission, so check their rules before relying on it.

Number of Attempts and Score Validity

You can take UCEED at most twice, and the two attempts must be in consecutive years. In practice, this means you can appear in your Class XII year and in the year right after it. For example, a student who appeared for Class XII in 2026 could take UCEED 2026 and UCEED 2027, but not UCEED 2028.

A UCEED score is valid for one year only and only for admission in that same academic year. A UCEED 2027 score can be used for 2027-28 admission, not later. If you plan a second attempt, treat the first one as a full, serious attempt rather than a trial, since you cannot carry the score forward.

Eligibility for B.Des Admission After UCEED

Getting a UCEED rank is the first step. To be admitted to B.Des at a participating institute, you must:

  1. Meet the age criterion listed above.

  2. Have a rank in UCEED 2027. Only candidates who clear both the Part A shortlisting and the Part B qualifying mark get a rank.

  3. Pass Class XII or equivalent in 2026 or 2027, and submit proof of passing to the admitting institute by 30 September 2027.

Subject requirements depend on the institute:

The official admission page also mentions Biology in one place for IIITDM Jabalpur while stating elsewhere that PCM students can apply to all seven institutes. If you have Biology without Mathematics, confirm with the UCEED office before relying on IIITDM Jabalpur. The admission rules are on the official page: https://www.uceed.iitb.ac.in/2027/eligibility-admission.html

If your board issues only letter grades without a passing grade, you must get a certificate from the board stating the passing grade and upload it with your grade sheet. Institutes can cancel admission at any stage if information is found incorrect.

Category, Reservation and Certificates

Seats at the participating institutes follow central reservation norms. Category claims need valid certificates uploaded during registration.

Category

Reservation

Certificate note

GEN-EWS

10 per cent

Income and asset certificate; family income below Rs. 8 lakh and asset limits apply

OBC-NCL

27 per cent

Valid OBC non-creamy layer certificate; creamy-layer OBC candidates are treated as GEN

SC

15 per cent

Caste certificate from a competent authority

ST

7.5 per cent

Tribe certificate from a competent authority

PwD

5 per cent horizontal, within each category

UDID card and/or the prescribed disability certificate

Category also affects the exam: OBC-NCL and EWS candidates need 90 per cent of the OPEN Part A cut-off, and SC, ST and PwD candidates need 50 per cent. Candidates with severe dyslexia submit specific forms instead of a regular disability certificate. PwD candidates can request a scribe or compensatory time for Part A, but scribes are not allowed for Part B.

Foreign Nationals and OCI/PIO Card Holders

  • Same three criteria: Foreign nationals must meet the age, qualifying exam and attempts rules, with their qualification recognised as equivalent to 10+2.

  • OCI/PIO cards issued before 4 March 2021: These candidates are treated like Indian nationals for fees and compete only in the OPEN category for seats.

  • OCI/PIO cards issued on or after 4 March 2021: These candidates are treated as foreign nationals and pay the foreign national fee.

  • Seats: Foreign national seats are supernumerary, capped at 10 per cent of the seats in each programme.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • Older candidates: OPEN, EWS or OBC-NCL candidates born before 1 October 2002, and SC, ST or PwD candidates born before 1 October 1997.

  • Earlier Class XII batches: Anyone who first appeared for Class XII in 2025 or earlier, unless the late-result exception applies.

  • Third attempt: Anyone who has already taken UCEED twice, or whose attempts are not in consecutive years.

  • Unrecognised qualifications: Candidates whose qualification is not recognised as equivalent to Class XII and who have no AIU equivalence certificate.

Registration is cancelled at any stage if a candidate is found ineligible, and the fee is not refunded.

Quick self-check

  1. Date of birth: Is it on or after 1 October 2002 (or 1 October 1997 for SC, ST and PwD)?

  2. Class XII year: Did you first appear in 2026, or will you appear in 2027?

  3. Attempts: Is this your first or second attempt, in consecutive years?

  4. Qualification: Is your board or exam on the accepted list, or do you have an AIU equivalence certificate?

  5. Admission plan: If you do not have PCM, are you aiming for IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad or IIT Indore?

If you answer yes to the first four, you can register. The fifth question shapes your institute choices later, and our UCEED cut-off and closing ranks page shows how competitive each institute has been.
