WB TET Eligibility 2026: Qualification, Marks and Age

WB TET eligibility decides whether you can sit the Primary TET (Classes I to V) conducted by the West Bengal Board of Primary Education (WBBPE). The rules follow the minimum qualifications set by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE): a Higher Secondary pass with the required marks plus an approved teacher training course such as D.El.Ed. The latest completed cycle was TET 2023, held on 24 December 2023.

No new Primary TET notification has been released as of 27 October 2026, so this page is built from the TET-2022 and TET-2023 notices and the 2025 primary recruitment notice. It covers the accepted qualifications, minimum marks and relaxation, final-year candidates, the B.Ed question, age, medium rules and the separate eligibility for in-service teachers. Check every point against the next official notification before you apply.

Educational Qualification for WB Primary TET

You need one of the qualification combinations below. These are the options listed in the TET-2022 and TET-2023 notices for Classes I to V.

Option

Academic qualification

Professional qualification

1

Higher Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks

2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed), by whatever name known

2

Higher Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks

4-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed)

3

Higher Secondary or equivalent with at least 50% marks

2-year Diploma in Education (Special Education) recognised by the Rehabilitation Council of India

4

Graduation

2-year Diploma in Elementary Education (D.El.Ed)

The 2025 primary recruitment notice (Memo No. 2141/WBBPE/2025/59R-09/2024) also lists Higher Secondary with at least 45% plus a 2-year D.El.Ed, in line with NCTE norms. Whether this route is open for the next TET will depend on the wording of that notification.

Your training course must be from an institution recognised by NCTE, or by RCI in the case of special education. A course from an unrecognised institute will not make you eligible, even if you have the certificate.

What counts as Higher Secondary or equivalent

  • Higher Secondary: Class 12 from the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or any recognised board.

  • Equivalent: Class 12 from another state board, CBSE, CISCE or a recognised open school board, as long as it is treated as equivalent by the state.

  • Marks calculation: Use the aggregate percentage shown on your marksheet. If your board gives grades, convert them using the board's official formula and keep the conversion certificate ready.

Minimum Marks and Category Relaxation

Category

Minimum marks in Higher Secondary or graduation

General

50%

SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B

45%

EC, Ex-Servicemen

45%

PH and DH (persons with disabilities)

45%

This 5% relaxation is in the TET-2022 notice. It applies to the academic qualification, not to the TET qualifying marks, which have their own relaxation (60% for General and 55% for these categories).

To claim a reserved-category relaxation, you need a valid certificate issued by a competent authority in West Bengal. Keep the original and a copy ready for verification.

Final-Year and Appearing Candidates

Recent notices allowed some candidates who were still in training to sit the TET. Based on the TET-2022 and TET-2023 notices, these groups were eligible:

  • Final exam appeared: Candidates who had appeared in the final exam of a recognised D.El.Ed, D.Ed (Special Education) or other accepted course, with results not yet declared on the notification date.

  • Part-I passed: Candidates in a 2-year training session who had passed the Part-I exam of that session, as specified in the notice.

  • Enrolled trainees: Candidates enrolled in a recognised 2-year D.El.Ed, 4-year B.El.Ed or 2-year D.Ed (Special Education) course, as described in the notice.

The rule that matters most: a qualification acquired after the notification date is not accepted. Also remember that passing TET as a trainee is not enough for a job. You must hold the final training certificate when you apply for recruitment.

Can B.Ed Holders Apply for WB Primary TET

This is the most common eligibility question, and the answer has changed over time.

  • Earlier notices: The TET-2022 notice accepted graduation with at least 50% marks plus B.Ed for Classes I to V.

  • Supreme Court ruling: On 11 August 2023, the Supreme Court held that B.Ed is not a valid qualification for primary teacher posts. On 8 April 2024 it clarified that the ruling applies prospectively, protecting teachers already regularly appointed on that basis.

  • Current position: The 2025 primary recruitment notice did not list B.Ed among the accepted qualifications.

If you hold only a B.Ed, do not assume you are eligible for the next Primary TET. Read the eligibility clause of the next notification carefully. B.Ed remains a standard qualification for upper primary and secondary teaching.

Age Limit for WB TET

The TET-2022 and TET-2023 notices did not prescribe a minimum or maximum age for sitting the test. Age becomes important at the recruitment stage.

No age limit stated in recent notices

Primary teacher recruitment 2025

Upper age relaxation (recruitment)

For SC, ST, OBC-A, OBC-B, PwD, EC, Ex-Servicemen and para teachers, as per state rules

The 2025 recruitment notice says the upper age limit is relaxable for these categories but does not set out the years of relaxation in its summary. Check the full notice of the recruitment you apply for, because the reference date and relaxation are set separately each time.

Nationality, Medium and Language Rules

  • Nationality: The 2025 recruitment notice requires candidates to be citizens of India.

  • Medium choice: In the TET application, you choose Language I, which links to the medium of instruction you want to teach in. The TET-2022 options were Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali, Santhali, Odia and Telugu.

  • Language study at school: For recruitment, the 2025 notice required candidates to have studied and passed the medium language at Higher Secondary level as a first or second language. For Santhali in Ol Chiki script, proficiency in reading, writing and speaking was accepted.

  • Reserved-category benefits: These need a valid West Bengal caste or category certificate.

Choose your Language I carefully. It decides the language part of your paper and, later, the medium-wise vacancies you can apply for.

Eligibility for In-Service Teachers

A separate group now needs TET: teachers already working in Classes I to VIII who were appointed without it.

  • Supreme Court ruling: On 1 September 2025, the Supreme Court held that TET applies to in-service teachers, subject to conditions. Teachers with more than five years of service left must qualify to continue, and TET is needed for promotion.

  • Deadline: A review order dated 29 May 2026 extended the time to qualify, with 31 August 2028 reported as the deadline.

  • State action: On 11 September 2026, the West Bengal School Education Department asked WBBPE and WBSSC to prepare for such a test (reported).

No notification, date or separate eligibility rule for this test has been published yet. If you are an in-service teacher, watch the WBBPE and WBSSC websites for an official notice.

Upper Primary TET Eligibility in Brief

To teach Classes VI to VIII, you follow the upper primary route under the West Bengal Central School Service Commission's rules, not the WBBPE Primary TET. The upper primary rules accept a graduate degree with an NCTE-recognised professional qualification such as B.Ed, a 2-year D.El.Ed, a 4-year B.A. Ed or B.Sc. Ed, a 4-year B.El.Ed, or B.Ed (Special Education) recognised by RCI. No recent upper primary TET notification was found, so check WBSSC for current rules.

Who Is Not Eligible

  • No teacher training: A Higher Secondary pass or graduate without D.El.Ed, B.El.Ed or D.Ed (Special Education), and not enrolled in one, cannot apply.

  • Below the minimum marks: General candidates under 50% in Higher Secondary, or reserved candidates under 45%, are not eligible under the 50% options.

  • Unrecognised institute: A diploma from an institute not recognised by NCTE or RCI does not count.

  • Late qualification: A qualification completed after the notification date is not accepted.

  • B.Ed only: Likely not eligible for the Primary TET after the August 2023 Supreme Court ruling, unless the next notice says otherwise.

How to Check Your Eligibility Step by Step

  1. Check your Higher Secondary percentage: Work out your aggregate from the marksheet. General candidates need 50% and notified reserved categories 45% for the main options.

  2. Check your training course: Confirm it is a 2-year D.El.Ed, 4-year B.El.Ed or RCI-recognised D.Ed (Special Education), and that the institute was recognised in your session.

  3. Check your training status on the notification date: Completed, final exam appeared, or enrolled as the notice allows. A course started after the notification date does not count.

  4. Check your category documents: If you claim relaxation, make sure your West Bengal certificate is valid and in your current name.

  5. Check your medium language: Make sure you studied your chosen Language I at Higher Secondary level, because the recruitment stage asks for it.

  6. Read the new notice in full: Compare every point above with the eligibility clause of the next official notification before you pay the fee.

If any step leaves you unsure, write to WBBPE through the contact details on its website before the application closes, rather than applying and hoping the form is accepted.
