WBPSC Clerkship Eligibility 2026: Age Limit and Qualification
The WBPSC Clerkship Examination is one of the few West Bengal government recruitments open to candidates with only a Madhyamik (Class 10) pass. The West Bengal Public Service Commission is currently accepting applications under Advertisement No. 12/2024 (Clerkship Examination, 2024) from 6 to 26 October 2026, for Lower Division Assistant, Lower Division Clerk and similar posts.
This guide covers the full WBPSC Clerkship eligibility criteria: educational qualification, computer and typing skills, age limit and relaxation, the Bengali language condition, nationality and the documents you will need. One detail matters more than usual this cycle. Age is counted as on 1 January 2024, not on the date you apply, so read the age section carefully before deciding whether you can apply.

Why Age Is Counted as on 1 January 2024
The examination is named Clerkship Examination, 2024, and WBPSC has fixed the age reference date as 1 January 2024, even though applications open in October 2026. This works in two directions.
It helps older candidates: If you have crossed the upper age limit only in 2024, 2025 or 2026, you may still be eligible, because your age is checked as it stood on 1 January 2024.
It can exclude younger candidates: If you were under 18 on 1 January 2024, you are not eligible this cycle, even if you are well over 18 today.
Use the date of birth printed on your Madhyamik or equivalent certificate. WBPSC does not accept any other record for age.
Educational Qualification
You must have passed the Madhyamik Examination of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education or an equivalent examination from a recognised board.
Equivalent boards: A Class 10 pass from another recognised school board, such as a central board, is accepted as equivalent. If you studied through an open school or a less common board, check the equivalence clause in the advertisement before applying.
No minimum percentage: The notification sets no minimum Madhyamik percentage. A pass is enough.
Higher qualifications: Graduates and postgraduates can apply, as long as they meet the other conditions. A higher degree gives no extra marks or preference.
Status on the closing date: You should already hold the qualification within the time limit stated in the advertisement. Since the requirement is Class 10, most applicants clear this easily.
Computer Knowledge and Typing Speed
The advertisement asks for elementary knowledge of computer operation and the ability to type. This is checked in the computer operation and typing test, held after Part I and Part II of the written exam.
Typing language | Required speed |
|---|---|
English | 20 words per minute |
Bengali | 10 words per minute |
No certificate needed at the time of applying: You do not upload a computer or typing certificate. Your skill is tested directly.
Choose the language in the form: You select English or Bengali typing while applying, and you are tested in that language.
Qualifying stage: The test adds no marks, but only candidates who pass it enter the final merit list.
Bengali typing at 10 wpm needs familiarity with a Bengali keyboard layout. If you have never typed in Bengali, English at 20 wpm is usually quicker to reach.
WBPSC Clerkship Age Limit and Relaxation
Candidates must be between 18 and 40 years of age as on 1 January 2024. Relaxation in the upper age limit is available to certain categories.
Category | Upper age relaxation | Maximum age (as on 1 January 2024) |
|---|---|---|
General / Unreserved (including SC, ST and OBC of other states) | Nil | 40 years |
EWS (West Bengal) | Nil | 40 years |
OBC Non-Creamy Layer (West Bengal) | 3 years | 43 years |
SC / ST (West Bengal) | 5 years | 45 years |
Persons with Benchmark Disability (40% or more) | Up to 45 years | 45 years |
Ex-Servicemen | Service period deducted (see below) | Up to 3 years above the upper limit after deduction |
The minimum age of 18 years applies to every category. No relaxation is given on the lower limit.
How to check your age: worked examples
Date of birth | Age on 1 January 2024 | Result |
|---|---|---|
10 March 1985 | 38 years | Eligible in every category |
20 August 1982 | 41 years | Not eligible as General; eligible as West Bengal OBC-NCL, SC, ST or PwBD |
5 February 1979 | 44 years | Eligible only as West Bengal SC/ST or PwBD |
15 May 2006 | 17 years | Not eligible this cycle, although over 18 today |
If your date of birth falls very close to a boundary, read the exact date-of-birth window printed in the advertisement for your category, because a single day decides eligibility.
Age relaxation for ex-servicemen
Ex-servicemen who have rendered at least six months of continuous service can deduct the period of service from their actual age. If the resulting age does not exceed the upper age limit by more than three years, the candidate is treated as within the age limit. Keep your discharge certificate and service details ready to support this claim.
Bengali Language Requirement
The posts involve day-to-day work in West Bengal government offices, so the advertisement requires candidates to be able to read, write and speak Bengali.
Nepali exception: The requirement does not apply to candidates whose mother tongue is Nepali.
Testing for other candidates: Candidates whose mother tongue is not Bengali have their knowledge of Bengali assessed at the computer and typing test stage. A poor or average showing can lead to cancellation of candidature.
Part II language choice: You may write Group B of Part II in Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali. Choosing another language in Part II does not remove the Bengali requirement for the job.
Check the exact wording of this clause in the official advertisement, including any condition about passing a departmental Bengali test during service. If you are from outside West Bengal, start reading and writing practice in Bengali early.
Nationality
Indian citizens: A citizen of India by birth or registration can apply.
Other eligible persons: Persons declared eligible by the Government of India under the applicable rules may also apply. Where a certificate of eligibility is needed, a candidate may be admitted to the exam provisionally, but appointment is made only after the certificate is issued.
Reservation: Who Gets Category Benefits
Reservation in this exam follows West Bengal government rules. This affects age relaxation, fee exemption and qualifying marks.
Category | Who can claim it | Certificate needed |
|---|---|---|
SC / ST | Candidates of West Bengal only | Caste certificate issued by a competent authority of West Bengal |
OBC-A / OBC-B (Non-Creamy Layer) | Candidates of West Bengal only | OBC certificate and valid non-creamy layer certificate |
EWS | Eligible candidates of West Bengal | EWS certificate as prescribed by the state |
PwBD | Candidates with 40% or more benchmark disability | Disability certificate from the competent medical authority |
Ex-Servicemen | As defined under state rules | Discharge certificate and supporting documents |
Meritorious Sportsperson | Candidates with achievements in recognised sports | Sports certificate in the prescribed format |
SC, ST and OBC candidates from other states can apply, but they are treated as General candidates. They get no age relaxation, no fee exemption and no reserved-category qualifying marks.
Application Fee and Exemptions
Category | Fee |
|---|---|
General, OBC, EWS and other-state reserved candidates | Rs. 110 plus service charges |
SC / ST of West Bengal | Exempted |
PwBD (40% or more disability) | Exempted |
The fee is paid online only, by 3:30 pm on 26 October 2026. Only one application per candidate is allowed; multiple applications can lead to cancellation.
Documents to Keep Ready
Madhyamik or equivalent certificate and mark sheet: Proof of qualification and date of birth.
Category certificate: SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, PwBD, ex-serviceman or sportsperson certificate, if you claim the benefit.
Photo identity proof: One valid photo ID, such as a Madhyamik certificate with photo, passport, PAN card, voter ID card or driving licence. Enter its number in the form and carry the original to the exam centre.

Category and other certificates are uploaded during the edit window from 28 October to 1 November 2026, in PDF format of up to 100 KB. The edit option can be used only once, so check every field before saving.
Exam Centre Eligibility: Darjeeling and Kalimpong
Part I is held at 26 centres across West Bengal, from Kolkata and Howrah to Siliguri and Cooch Behar. Most candidates can pick any centre, but two hill centres carry their own conditions.
Centre | Who can choose it |
|---|---|
Darjeeling | Scheduled Tribe candidates of Darjeeling district, and candidates from the Darjeeling Sadar, Mirik and Kurseong hill subdivisions |
Kalimpong | Candidates of Kalimpong district |
Choose these centres only if you meet the condition. The Commission may also allot an adjacent centre instead of the one you chose, so choose a centre you can reach comfortably and plan travel early.
Who Is Not Eligible
Under 18 on 1 January 2024: Even if you are older now, the reference date decides.
Over the upper age limit for your category on 1 January 2024: Relaxation applies only to the categories listed above.
Without a Madhyamik or equivalent pass: Class 8 or Class 9 is not enough.
Unable to read, write and speak Bengali: Unless your mother tongue is Nepali.
Claiming a category without a valid West Bengal certificate: The claim may be rejected and you may be treated as General, which can make you overage.
Even after you clear the written stages, appointment depends on a medical examination and police verification of antecedents. An adverse report at either step can lead to cancellation.
