What you'll master
Requirements
- Complete the Paper II (Chemistry) Prelims syllabus at graduation level before attempting
- Keep a rough sheet ready for numerical problems; no calculator is provided
- Use a laptop, desktop or tablet with a stable internet connection
- Attempt only when confident, since one-third marks are deducted for each wrong answer
Description
UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination - Paper II: Chemistry Mock Test
A full-length, medium-to-hard mock test for Paper II (Chemistry) of the UPSC Combined Geo-Scientist Preliminary Examination. It is built for Chemist-stream candidates applying for Chemist (GSI), Scientist B (Chemical) and Assistant Chemist (CGWB) posts.
Test structure
50 multiple-choice questions, four options each, single correct answer
Duration: 50 minutes
Maximum marks: 300
Marking: +6 for each correct answer, -2 (one-third) for each wrong answer, no penalty for unattempted questions
The test is a 5:12 scaled version of the actual paper (120 items, 300 marks, 2 hours). It keeps the official one-third negative marking and the 100:300 weighting of Paper I to Paper II, so Chemistry carries three times the weight of General Studies.
Branch-wise distribution
Physical Chemistry - 18 questions (kinetic theory and gaseous state, solids, thermodynamics, chemical equilibria, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, atomic structure, solutions)
Inorganic Chemistry - 16 questions (chemical periodicity, chemical bonding and molecular structure, acids and bases, coordination compounds, theoretical basis of quantitative inorganic analysis)
Organic Chemistry - 11 questions (reaction intermediates, stereochemistry, types of organic reactions, molecular rearrangements)
Analytical Chemistry - 5 questions (errors and statistics, titrimetry, spectrophotometry, complexometry, gravimetry, chromatography)
What makes it exam-like
19 numerical problems, including the Nernst equation, Arrhenius activation energy, unit-cell density, Kp from degree of dissociation, pH of very dilute acids, Ksp, spin-only magnetic moment, the Beer-Lambert law and redox titration
UPSC-style statement, pair-matching and ordering questions
Difficulty: 31 medium and 19 hard questions
Every question comes with a detailed explanation, and all numerical answers have been verified with full working.
