What this means for your stream: 84 of the 127 posts are Group B. Geophysics candidates have no GSI Group A seat this year but can target 36 Group B openings and one CGWB Scientist 'B' post. Geology candidates have the widest choice, while Chemistry candidates compete for 15 seats across both organisations.

UPSC Geo Scientist Apply Online 2027

The application window has closed for this cycle. The process below is useful for checking your submitted form and for planning the next cycle.

UPSC's portal at upsconline.nic.in has four modules. The first three are common to all UPSC exams and can be filled at any time. The fourth is exam-specific and opens only during the notified window.

  1. Account creation: Register with a valid email ID and mobile number.

  2. Universal Registration Number (URN): Generated once in a lifetime and used for all UPSC exams. UPSC allows a one-time edit of the URN profile, but changes apply only to applications submitted afterwards.

  3. Common Application Form (CAF): Upload your photograph, capture a live photo, and upload your signature signed three times on white paper in black ink. Keep scanned copies of age, qualification and category certificates ready.

  4. Exam-specific module: Choose your stream, service preferences and Prelims centre, then pay the fee.

A few rules matter here. Centres are allotted on a first-apply-first-allot basis. Applications cannot be withdrawn, and no field can be corrected after submission. Candidates already in government service must inform their head of office in writing.

UPSC Geo Scientist Selection Process 2027

Selection for UPSC Geo Scientist 2027 happens in three stages, and marks from all three count towards the final merit list.

Stage I: Preliminary Examination

Two objective papers on an OMR sheet, carrying 400 marks in total. Paper I is General Studies (common to all streams) and Paper II is your stream subject. Candidates must clear separate minimum qualifying marks in each paper. About six to seven times the number of vacancies are shortlisted for Mains, which works out to roughly 760 to 890 candidates this year.

Stage II: Main Examination

Three descriptive papers of 200 marks each, all from your stream, for a total of 600 marks. Candidates who miss even one paper are disqualified.

Stage III: Personality Test

A 200-mark interview with no minimum qualifying mark. About twice the number of vacancies are called. The board assesses leadership, initiative, intellectual curiosity, integrity and aptitude for field life.

Note: Some pages describe the Prelims as "qualifying only" or as a computer-based test. Both are incorrect. Per the notice, Prelims marks count towards final merit, and the Prelims is held on OMR sheets.

UPSC Geo Scientist Preparation Tips

With about 15 weeks left until the UPSC Geo Scientist 2027 Prelims, a phased plan works better than reading the syllabus front to back.

Weeks

Focus

1 to 4

Solve the 2024, 2025 and 2026 Prelims papers untimed and map every question to a syllabus unit.

5 to 9

Close weak Paper II units from M.Sc. texts and give General Studies about 45 minutes a day.

10 to 13

Take two full-length timed mocks a week and review every wrong answer.

14 to 15

Revise short notes and attempt at least one mock on a printed OMR sheet.

A few habits make the biggest difference:

  • Respect the GS cut-off. Paper I has its own minimum qualifying mark, and strong subject scorers do get eliminated here.

  • Guess selectively. With a one-third penalty, blind guessing works against you, but eliminating two options first tilts the odds in your favour.

  • Practise without a calculator. Numerical questions in Prelims must be solved by hand.

  • Start Mains answer writing early. The gap between Prelims and Mains is about five months, and descriptive answers with diagrams take time to master.

UPSC Geo Scientist Interview

The Personality Test carries 200 marks, which is a sixth of the total, so it can move your final rank considerably. Expect questions on your M.Sc. dissertation, fieldwork experience, the roles of GSI and CGWB, and current issues such as critical minerals, groundwater depletion and natural hazards. The board specifically looks for candidates who can adapt to field life, so be ready to discuss field camps and practical work honestly.

UPSC Geo Scientist Admit Card 2027

UPSC issues the e-Admit Card on the last working day of the week before the exam, and does not send admit cards by post. Download it from upsconline.nic.in and check your name, photograph, roll number and centre. If you have not received it a week before the exam, contact UPSC immediately. Carry the admit card along with the photo ID you entered in your URN profile. Entry closes 30 minutes before each session, and face authentication is mandatory.

UPSC Geo Scientist Answer Key 2027

UPSC provides an online window for representations on the Prelims questions and provisional answer key. The window runs from the 3rd day after the exam until 6:00 PM on the 7th day. Representations are accepted only through upsconline.nic.in, and none are entertained after the window closes. Use the provisional key to estimate your score and plan whether to start Mains preparation at full speed.
