UPSC Geo Scientist Eligibility 2027: Age & Qualification

Before you prepare for the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, make sure you meet the UPSC Geo Scientist eligibility 2027 conditions for the specific post you want. Eligibility is not the same for every post. The Master's degree that qualifies you as a Geologist may not qualify you as a Geophysicist, and a mistake here can cancel your candidature even after you clear the exam.

This guide explains every eligibility condition in the official notice (Examination Notice No. 01/2027-GEOL): age limit, relaxation, post-wise qualification, nationality, attempts, physical standards and category certificates.

Final-Year Students Can Apply

Candidates who have taken, or will take, their final Master's exam can apply provisionally. If you qualify for the interview, UPSC gives a 10-day window after the Mains result to upload proof of passing. If you miss this window, you cannot appear for the interview.

Other Qualification Rules

  • Two-year rule: A Master's degree means a postgraduate degree of at least two years after graduation, whether integrated or not.

  • Foreign degrees: A Master's degree from a government-approved foreign university is accepted.

  • Exceptional cases: UPSC may accept other qualifications in exceptional cases, at its discretion.

  • One stream only: Holders of Geo-Exploration or Applied Geology degrees qualify for two streams but must choose one when applying.

A Bachelor's degree alone does not make you eligible for any post in this exam, even though some websites describe the eligibility as "Graduation".

Category Certificates: Dates That Matter

This part of the UPSC Geo Scientist eligibility 2027 conditions is where many eligible candidates lose their reservation benefit.

Common Eligibility Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mismatched date of birth: Any difference between your URN profile and your Class 10 certificate can lead to disciplinary action.

  • Wrong post for your degree: This applies especially to specialised Chemistry degrees and Physics graduates applying for Geology posts.

  • Expired or early-dated certificates: OBC and EWS certificates issued before 1 April 2026 are not valid for this cycle.

  • Missing the post-Mains upload window: Final-year candidates have only 10 days to upload proof of their degree.

Remember that UPSC verifies original documents only after the Mains. Your admission at every earlier stage is provisional, so you may clear the Prelims and Mains and still be disqualified if a condition is not met.
