eSanjeevani Crosses 50 Crore Teleconsultations in India

Key points

Why in the News?

India's National Telemedicine Service, eSanjeevani, crossed the landmark of 50 crore (500 million) teleconsultations, marking a major achievement in the country's digital healthcare system.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the platform recorded 50,00,92,730 teleconsultations as of 15 September 2026, covering all 36 States and Union Territories.

The achievement highlights India's growing use of digital technology to improve healthcare accessibility, particularly in rural, remote and underserved areas.

What Is eSanjeevani?

eSanjeevani is India's National Telemedicine Service, developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) under the guidance of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

It enables patients to consult doctors remotely through digital platforms without necessarily visiting hospitals in person.

The initiative aims to provide accessible and affordable healthcare services while reducing geographical barriers.

eSanjeevani operates through two major models:

1. eSanjeevani – Ayushman Arogya Mandir

This is a provider-to-provider telemedicine service connecting healthcare workers at primary healthcare centres with doctors and specialists at medical hubs.

2. eSanjeevani OPD

This is a patient-to-doctor telemedicine service that allows citizens to consult medical professionals remotely from their homes.

Expansion of eSanjeevani Services

The platform has developed into one of the world's largest government-supported telemedicine systems.

As reported in October 2026, eSanjeevani supported more than 1.42 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandir spokes, 19,473 medical hubs and 901 online OPDs.

It had 2,41,923 registered healthcare providers and was facilitating approximately 2.5–3 lakh consultations every day.

The service was available in 15 languages, including English and 14 Indian languages.

Women accounted for 57.14% of total utilisation, while 40.15% of consultations were availed by people aged 46 years and above.

These figures demonstrate the importance of telemedicine in improving healthcare access for women, older people and residents of remote areas.

Integration of Artificial Intelligence

An important technological advancement is the integration of an Artificial Intelligence-powered Clinical Decision Support System (AI-CDSS).

The system assists healthcare professionals during consultations by providing clinical decision support.

The innovation received the Gold Award under the National Awards for e-Governance 2026.

eSanjeevani has also been integrated with the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112) to improve coordination between emergency response services and remote medical experts.

Expansion of Specialist Healthcare Services

eSanjeevani has expanded beyond primary healthcare to provide specialist medical consultations.

Specialist teleconsultation services have been introduced at AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Jammu and AIIMS Patna.

The government has also envisaged expanding these services to other premier medical institutions, including JIPMER and PGIMER Chandigarh.

This initiative can reduce travel requirements and improve access to specialist medical care for patients living far from major hospitals.

Significance for India's Healthcare System

The achievement of 50 crore teleconsultations highlights the growing importance of Digital Public Infrastructure in healthcare delivery.

The platform helps reduce geographical barriers and supports better access to medical professionals in rural and remote regions.

It also strengthens India's efforts towards Universal Health Coverage, which aims to ensure that people can access essential healthcare services without financial hardship.

As an indigenous digital healthcare solution, eSanjeevani supports the broader objectives of Digital India, Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat.

Conclusion

The achievement of 50 crore teleconsultations through eSanjeevani represents a major milestone in India's digital healthcare development.

By combining telemedicine, artificial intelligence and specialist medical services, the platform is strengthening healthcare accessibility and supporting the goal of Universal Health Coverage.
