Government Approves 12 Electronics Projects Under ECMS 2026

Key points
Why in the News?
On 6 November 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) approved 12 new projects under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), involving a proposed investment of ₹7,503 crore.
The projects are expected to generate production worth ₹39,045 crore and create approximately 7,127 direct employment opportunities.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approvals while launching the Semicon 2.0 Web Application Portal under the Semicon India Programme.
The initiative aims to strengthen India's domestic electronics manufacturing ecosystem, reduce dependence on imported electronic components and promote the government's Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
About the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS)
The Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme is a Government of India initiative designed to encourage domestic manufacturing of electronic components, sub-assemblies, supply chain materials and capital goods.
The scheme focuses on developing a complete electronics manufacturing ecosystem rather than relying mainly on assembling finished electronic products.
It aims to increase domestic value addition, attract investment, promote advanced manufacturing technologies and create employment opportunities.
Electronic components such as printed circuit boards, relays, battery materials and semiconductor-related products are essential for industries including telecommunications, automobiles, consumer electronics and renewable energy.
Details of the Newly Approved Projects
The 12 approved projects cover 10 product segments, including electronic components, supply chain materials and capital goods.
The approved manufacturing activities include multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs), relays, heat sinks, specialty ceramics, copper foil, anode materials, cathode active materials, polypropylene film and camera rims.
The approvals also cover capital equipment and parts used in industrial automation and advanced manufacturing.
For the first time under ECMS, approvals have been granted for copper foil, cathode active material and specialty ceramics.
These materials are important for developing domestic supply chains for electronic devices, lithium-ion batteries and advanced industrial applications.
The projects will be established across seven Indian states: Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
Overall Progress Under ECMS
With the latest approvals, the total number of approved applications under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme has increased to 118.
These applications cover 34 products across 16 states.
The cumulative projected investment has reached ₹77,051 crore, while expected production is estimated at ₹5,73,146 crore.
The approved projects are expected to generate approximately 81,755 direct employment opportunities.
The expansion of ECMS reflects the government's efforts to develop a stronger domestic electronics supply chain and improve India's competitiveness in global manufacturing.
What Is Semicon India 2.0?
Alongside the ECMS approvals, the government launched the Semicon 2.0 Web Application Portal.
The Union Cabinet has approved Semicon 2.0 with a financial outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore under the India Semiconductor Mission.
The programme focuses on six strategic pillars:
Chip Design: Strengthening domestic semiconductor design capabilities.
Machines and Materials: Developing semiconductor manufacturing equipment and essential materials.
Semiconductor Fabrication: Establishing additional chip fabrication facilities.
ATMP/OSAT Industry: Strengthening semiconductor assembly, testing, marking and packaging.
Research and Development: Promoting semiconductor innovation and advanced technologies.
Talent Development: Developing a skilled workforce for the semiconductor industry.
Applications have opened for Pillars 2, 3 and 4 through the newly launched portal.
Significance for India's Economy
The approval of new electronics manufacturing projects is expected to support India's industrial development and technological self-reliance.
Expanding domestic component production can reduce dependence on imported materials and improve supply chain resilience.
The projects are also expected to attract investment, create skilled employment opportunities and strengthen the manufacturing ecosystem for electric vehicles, electronics and semiconductor-related industries.
The initiative supports India's broader objective of becoming a competitive global electronics manufacturing hub.
