ADRE Class 4 Exam Pattern 2026: Marks and Stages

The ADRE Class 4 exam pattern tells you how the Grade IV selection is organised: how many questions you face, how marks are given, what a wrong answer costs and which stages come after the written test. Knowing this early changes how you study, because a paper with negative marking and mixed subjects needs a different approach from a plain knowledge test.

One thing needs saying upfront. As of 19 October 2026, we could not confirm a final official Grade IV notification for the new cycle. The pattern below is the one reported for the previous cycle by news and exam-prep sources, so treat the numbers as indicative and check the notification when it is released.

Stage 1: Written Examination

The written test is the stage that matters most. It is an objective paper with multiple choice questions marked on an OMR sheet, and it is the same format for the Class VIII and HSLC level posts, with the question difficulty adjusted to the level. Here is the indicative structure.

Particular

Details (indicative)

Total questions

135

Marks per question

Total marks

135

Duration

About 150 minutes; one source says 120 minutes

Negative marking

0.25 mark per wrong answer

Subject areas

Social studies, general knowledge, mathematics, mental ability and logical reasoning, English

Medium

Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, English, Hindi

Questions by subject

Sources agree on the five subject areas but do not give a reliable question count for each. One site says the paper has three equal sections of 45 questions, while others list the five areas without a split. Because we cannot verify the split, we have not printed one. The safest plan is to prepare all areas evenly and adjust once the notification or a sample paper shows the exact structure.

Sectional timing

No sectional time limit has been reported. That means you manage the full paper time yourself, which is both a freedom and a risk. Candidates who spend too long on reasoning often rush the general knowledge questions that were quick to score.

Marking Scheme and Negative Marking

Every correct answer earns one mark. Every wrong answer takes away one quarter of a mark. Reports say nothing about a penalty for unattempted questions, so leaving a question blank is generally treated as zero, but confirm this in the notification.

Outcome

Marks

Correct answer

+1

Wrong answer

-0.25 (indicative)

Unattempted

0 (to be confirmed)

If you attempt 100 questions and get 80 right and 20 wrong, your score is 80 minus 5, which is 75 marks. Four wrong answers cancel one correct answer, so avoid random guessing and guess only when you can remove at least one or two options with confidence.

What the Pattern Means for You

  • Every question is worth the same: a one-line general knowledge question and a three-step arithmetic problem both give one mark. Take the quick ones first.

  • Cost of a wrong guess: you lose 0.25 mark for a miss and gain 1 for a hit. A guess pays off on average only if you are right more than one time in five, so a guess after removing two options is much safer than a blind one.

  • Where effort goes: general knowledge and Assam topics reward reading, while mathematics and reasoning reward practice. Keep both streams running every week.

  • Accuracy beats attempts: in a large competition, a clean 110 attempts with few errors usually beats 130 attempts with many.

  • Language comfort: if you read faster in your first language, choose the question paper language you know best, subject to the notification rules.

Stages: Oral Interview, Skill Test and Document Verification

Oral interview or viva

The Assam Tribune reported in 2025 that an oral examination would be held specifically for Grade IV candidates, and exam-prep pages describe the final stage as an interview with certificate verification. The weightage of this stage and whether it is qualifying or scored should be taken from the notification. Prepare simple answers about yourself, your district, your education and current events in Assam.

Skill or driving test

Posts such as driver need a practical test. Reports from 2025 mention driving, stenography and computer skill tests for the wider ADRE process, but only those relevant to your post apply to you. Check the post-wise table in the notification.

Document verification

Original certificates are checked at this stage. Keep your Class VIII or HSLC certificate, age proof, caste or category certificate if applicable, residence documents and any trade or ITI certificate in one folder.

Final Merit: What to Expect

We could not find an official weightage statement for Grade IV that we can quote. Some pages say final selection depends on the written and skill stages, while others add the interview. The only safe reading is that your written test score decides whether you reach the later stages, and the later stage marks, if any, are added as the notification says.

To plan, use this simple approach: aim to maximise written marks, because they are the one component fully in your control before the notification. Then prepare the oral round after you clear the written paper.

Time Management and Exam-Day Strategy

  1. Scan first: spend two minutes looking through the paper so you know the subject order.

  2. First pass for sure answers: attempt every question you can answer in under a minute.

  3. Second pass for calculation: return to arithmetic and reasoning questions that need a few steps.

  4. Last pass for doubtful ones: guess only where you can eliminate options.

  5. Reserve the last ten minutes: check OMR bubbles carefully, because one shifted row can spoil many answers.

Check the official Assam government portal and the recruitment portal named in the notification for the final pattern.
