BSF Constable Tradesman Syllabus: Topic-Wise Guide
The BSF Constable Tradesman syllabus for the written test covers four areas: General Awareness, English or Hindi, Numerical Aptitude and Reasoning. The trade test is separate and depends on your trade. Knowing how the topics split helps you decide where the first few weeks go.
BSF names the stages in its notification but, in the sources we could verify, does not publish a topic-wise syllabus. The lists below are built from the reported paper structure and the level of questions seen in similar constable papers. Use them as a working checklist, not as an official list, and compare with the notification on rectt.bsf.gov.in.
Syllabus at a glance
Section | Questions | Marks | Level |
|---|---|---|---|
General Awareness | 25 | 25 | Class 10 and everyday GK |
English or Hindi | 25 | 25 | Basic language skills |
Numerical Aptitude | 25 | 25 | Class 10 arithmetic |
Reasoning | 25 | 25 | Basic verbal and non-verbal |
Key points to know
Equal weight: Each section is reported to carry the same marks, so a weak section costs as much as a strong one gains.
Class 10 level: Most questions are reported to be at matriculation level, so concept clarity beats advanced tricks.
No official topic list: Do not rely on any site that claims a final BSF topic list without a notification reference.
General Awareness
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Current affairs | National and international events, sports, awards, defence and border security news, government schemes | Last 6 months of events |

Geography and science | Indian geography, rivers, states and capitals, basic physics, chemistry and biology | Class 9 and 10 science |
Static GK | Books and authors, important days, national symbols, central armed forces basics | One-page lists |
English or Hindi
The paper is reported to offer a language section in English or Hindi. Prepare the language you will choose.
Grammar: Tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement.
Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution.
Comprehension and correction: Short passages, error spotting, sentence improvement.
For Hindi, add sandhi, samas, gender and number, muhavare and lokoktiyan.
Numerical Aptitude
Area | Topics to cover | Start with |
|---|---|---|
Number work | Number system, HCF and LCM, simplification, square and cube roots | Simplification |
Ratio-based | Percentage, ratio and proportion, average, partnership | Percentage |
Commercial maths | Profit and loss, simple and compound interest, discount | Profit and loss |
Time-based | Time and work, time and distance, boats and streams | Time and work |
Percentage and ratio underpin most other chapters, so fix them before moving on.
Reasoning
Verbal: Analogy, classification, number and alphabet series, coding-decoding, blood relations, directions, ranking, syllogism.
Non-verbal: Mirror and water images, embedded figures, paper folding, cubes and dice.
Logical: Puzzles, statement and conclusion, decision making.
Trade test and physical stages
The trade test checks practical skill in your own trade, such as cooking, tailoring or carpentry, and its format is set by BSF in the notification. There is no written syllabus for it, so practise the core tasks of your trade under time. The physical tests also have no syllabus.
How to cover the syllabus
Weeks 1 to 3: Start Percentage, Ratio, Average and Simplification. Read one General Awareness topic daily.
Weeks 3 to 6: Add Reasoning verbal types and language grammar. Begin monthly current-affairs notes.
Weeks 6 to 8: Cover the remaining Maths chapters and non-verbal reasoning. Start topic-wise tests.
Final weeks: Take full-length timed mocks, review errors the same day and revise from your error log.
