BSSC Syllabus 2026: Inter Level and Graduate Level Topics

The BSSC syllabus is short on paper but wide in practice. The Bihar Staff Selection Commission names the sections of its preliminary exam, matric-level standards for science and mathematics, and a few headline topics, but it does not publish a long topic-wise list. This guide turns those official pointers and past question trends into a working checklist for the Inter Level and Graduate Level exams of the 2025-26 cycle.

The topic lists below are built from the advertisement coverage and from questions asked in earlier BSSC papers. Use them as a checklist, not as an official list, and compare them with the notice for your exam. Both exams are awaiting preliminary exam dates, so you have time to cover each topic properly.

Key Points to Know Before You Start

  • Prelims is a screening stage: Prelims marks decide who reaches Mains but are not added to final merit, so your target is a safe qualifying score across all three sections.

  • Matric-level standard: Science and mathematics are reported at matriculation level. Textbook clarity matters more than advanced tricks.

  • Bihar-specific content: General Studies carries Bihar-linked topics, including the state's role in the national movement. Many national-level guides skip this.

  • Mains scheme is not confirmed: For the Inter Level exam, the Mains pattern and syllabus are expected through a later notice. The Mains details here are indicative.

  • Graduate Level follows the same prelims sections: The Graduate Level prelims also has three sections of 50 questions each, with the reasoning section named as comprehension and logical reasoning.

Older pages may still show syllabus lists from the 2023 cycle or from other state exams, so follow the official notification.

BSSC Prelims Syllabus: Section-Wise Topics

Section

Topics to cover

Start with

General Studies

Current affairs, awards, sports, Indian history, culture, geography, Constitution, Panchayati Raj, Bihar in the national movement

Constitution basics and Indian geography

General Science

Physics, chemistry and biology at matric level

Biology and everyday science

Mathematics

Arithmetic topics up to matric level

Percentage, ratio, average

Mental Ability

Verbal and non-verbal reasoning

Series, coding-decoding, analogy

General Studies

This section rewards steady reading. Cover these areas in order of how often they appear in past BSSC papers and in similar Bihar exams.

  • Current affairs: Recent events, awards, appointments, sports, books and government schemes, with a regional lens on Bihar.

  • History and culture: Ancient, medieval and modern India, with attention to the freedom struggle and Bihar's movements, personalities and places.

  • Geography: Physical features, rivers, climate, resources and agriculture of India, plus Bihar's districts, rivers and crops.

  • Polity: The Constitution, fundamental rights and duties, Panchayati Raj, and the structure of the Centre and states.

  • General awareness: Languages, scripts, capitals, currencies, important days and institutions.

Bihar-Specific Topics to Add

The advertisement mentions Bihar's role in the national movement by name, and clerical exams run by the state commission usually carry other state-level questions too. Add a short Bihar module to your General Studies preparation.

Area

Examples to study

History

Magadha and Mauryan Bihar, Nalanda and Vikramshila, Champaran Satyagraha, the 1857 revolt in Bihar, Quit India Movement in Bihar

Geography

Rivers such as the Ganga, Kosi, Gandak and Son, flood-prone areas, districts and divisions, major crops and minerals

Culture

Festivals, folk art such as Madhubani painting, languages and literature, important fairs and heritage sites

Polity and economy

State legislature, Panchayati Raj institutions, major state schemes and the state's economic profile

Treat these as examples to anchor your reading. The exact questions vary, so build the module from a recent Bihar GK source and a Bihar board textbook, then refresh the scheme-related part each month.

General Science

The level is matriculation, which means NCERT and Bihar board textbooks for classes 8 to 10 are the safest base.

  • Physics: Motion and force, work and energy, light, sound, electricity and magnetism, simple machines.

  • Chemistry: Matter and its states, atomic structure, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, common chemical reactions, everyday chemistry.

  • Biology: Cell, tissues, human body systems, nutrition, diseases, plants and animals, environment and ecology.

Mathematics

The advertisement coverage points to arithmetic at matric level. Some pages also list time and work or time and distance, so practise those as well. They are common in clerical exams, and extra practice costs little.

Area

Topics

Number work

Number system, LCM and HCF, decimals and fractions, simplification

Ratios and percentages

Percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss

Interest

Simple interest and compound interest

Applied arithmetic

Time and work, time and distance (practise as extra)

Mental Ability

Questions test how quickly you spot a pattern. Reported areas include analogy, similarities and differences, space visualisation, problem solving, number series, coding-decoding and arithmetical reasoning. Past-paper trends add Venn diagrams, statement and conclusion, syllogism, seating arrangement and non-verbal series.

Type

Topics

What to practise

Verbal

Analogy, classification, coding-decoding, statement and conclusion, syllogism

Reading each statement carefully and drawing quick diagrams

Numerical

Number series, arithmetical reasoning, ranking and order

Spotting the rule in under 20 seconds

Non-verbal

Space visualisation, figure series, visual memory, pattern completion

Eliminating options by shape, rotation and count

These topics are fully learnable. Start with series and coding-decoding, which take little time to master and appear in almost every paper.

How to Divide Your Study Time

All three prelims sections carry 200 marks, but they do not need equal effort. This table is a suggested split for a candidate starting from school-level knowledge. Adjust it after your first few mock tests.

Section

Nature of preparation

Suggested share of study time

General Studies

Reading, memory and regular revision

35 to 40 per cent

General Science and Mathematics

Concept clarity followed by practice

30 to 35 per cent

Mental Ability

Daily pattern practice

25 to 30 per cent

If you are strong in mathematics, move some of that time into General Studies. Current affairs and Bihar topics are where most candidates lose easy marks.

Common mistakes with the syllabus

  • Studying beyond the level: Advanced algebra, trigonometry or competitive-level physics are not what the commission has described. Stay within matric standard first.

  • Ignoring Bihar topics: A generic national syllabus leaves gaps in the one area the advertisement names.

  • Leaving Hindi for last: Grammar is quick to learn but needs repetition, so add a few minutes daily rather than a single late push.

  • Copying another exam's list: The syllabus of other state or SSC exams overlaps only partly. Always cross-check with the BSSC notice.

BSSC Mains Syllabus (Reported)

The reported Mains scheme has two papers. Paper 1 combines General Awareness with a Hindi language component, and Paper 2 covers mental ability and logical reasoning, general mathematics and science. Because the commission has not confirmed this for the Inter Level exam, treat the lists as indicative.

Paper 1: General Awareness and Hindi

  • General awareness: The same areas as the prelims General Studies, studied in more depth.

  • Hindi grammar: Sentence, clause, phrase, word formation, sandhi, noun, number, pronoun, adjective and adverb.

  • Vocabulary: Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and proverbs.

Paper 2: Reasoning, Mathematics and Science

Expect the same three subjects as the prelims, with a longer paper of 150 questions. For the Graduate Level exam, reports state that Paper 2 follows the prelims pattern and syllabus, while a Hindi paper acts as a qualifying test.

Overlap Between Prelims and Mains

Area

Prelims

Mains

How to plan

General Studies

50 questions

Part of Paper 1

Study once in depth and revise using short notes

Science and Mathematics

50 questions

Part of Paper 2

Build concepts now and add speed later

Mental Ability

50 questions

Part of Paper 2

Daily practice from the start

Hindi language

Not tested

Reported in Paper 1

Add after the prelims topics are under control

The overlap is large, so most of your prelims preparation counts again in Mains. Only the Hindi component is a separate effort.

Skill Test and Interview

The BSSC written exams are followed by document verification, and a typing or computer skill test applies to posts that need it. There is no syllabus for the skill test, and typing speed requirements had not been announced in the coverage we checked. There is no interview for these clerical and assistant posts in the reported selection process.

Inter Level and Graduate Level: What Differs

Both exams use a similar preliminary format, so the same preparation serves both. The differences sit mainly in the Mains stage and in post-specific requirements, as reported in the coverage of the two advertisements.

Aspect

Inter Level

Graduate Level

Prelims sections

General Studies, General Science and Mathematics, Mental Ability

General Studies, General Science and Mathematics, Comprehension and Logical Reasoning

Mains

Scheme awaited from the commission; two papers reported

Hindi paper (qualifying) and a general paper that follows the prelims syllabus

Hindi

Reported within Mains Paper 1

Separate qualifying paper, with a minimum of 30 per cent reported

Extra requirement

Typing or computer knowledge for most posts

Subject or computer qualification for certain posts

If you plan to appear for both, give the comprehension component of the Graduate Level paper some extra reading practice, since it asks for passage-based reasoning rather than only puzzles.

Using Previous Year Questions to Check Coverage

A syllabus list tells you what could be asked. Previous year papers show what was asked and at what depth. After finishing a topic, solve ten to fifteen questions on it and mark each one as easy, doable or unfamiliar. Unfamiliar questions point to a gap in your notes, not just a weak score.

Keep a simple tracker with one row per topic, and update it after every test. Practising BSSC mock tests on Testkart gives you topic and section-wise results that fit neatly into such a tracker, so you can see which part of the syllabus still needs work.

How to Cover the BSSC Syllabus

A 12-week plan works well if you are starting now. Adjust it once the commission announces dates.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Learn concepts in mathematics, science and reasoning from textbooks, and read the Constitution, geography and history in short daily sessions.

  2. Weeks 5 to 8: Add current affairs for 30 minutes a day, make monthly notes, and take topic-wise tests after every chapter.

  3. Weeks 9 to 10: Take 20-minute sectional tests, with Bihar-specific topics and Hindi grammar included.

  4. Weeks 11 to 12: Attempt full 150-question mocks in 135 minutes, review each one the same day, and revise your error log.
