CA Foundation Eligibility 2027: Qualification, Registration and Age Rules
CA Foundation eligibility is set by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) under the Chartered Accountants Regulations. Unlike most competitive exams, there is no age limit and no stream restriction. What decides whether you can sit a session is your qualification, the date you registered with ICAI's Board of Studies, and whether you filled the exam form on time.
This page explains each condition for the January 2027 and later sessions, the registration cut-off rule that catches many students out, how long your registration stays valid, and who can skip Foundation altogether. The rules below come from ICAI's announcements and its FAQs on the current scheme of education and training.

Educational qualification
Registering after Class 10
ICAI allows students to register for the Foundation course after passing Class 10. Registering early gives you time with the study material, but it does not let you sit the exam before you finish school.
Passing Class 12 before the exam
You must pass the Senior Secondary (Class 12) examination conducted by a recognised board, or an equivalent examination, before you appear in CA Foundation. Students who register after Class 10 sit their first attempt only after Class 12 results are out.
Stream
Students from science and arts are as eligible as commerce students. Students without commerce in Class 12 may need extra time on Accounting basics, but this is a preparation issue, not an eligibility one. If you are unsure whether your board or qualification counts as equivalent to Class 12, check with ICAI before registering.
The four-month registration rule
This is the condition that most often decides eligibility. Candidates must be registered with ICAI's Board of Studies for at least four months on or before the first day of the month in which the exam is held.
Exam session | Register on or before | Status |
|---|---|---|
January 2027 | 1 September 2026 | Deadline passed |
May 2027 | 1 January 2027 | Derived from the four-month rule; confirm with ICAI |
September 2027 | 1 May 2027 | Derived from the four-month rule; confirm with ICAI |
The January 2027 cut-off follows the example given in ICAI's FAQs. The May and September 2027 dates are calculated from the same rule; ICAI usually confirms each cut-off in a Board of Studies announcement, so check that before you plan around them. If you miss the cut-off, you wait for the next session.
Age limit and validity
No age limit: ICAI sets no minimum or maximum age for CA Foundation. Eligibility depends on qualification and registration date.
Four-year validity: Your Foundation registration is valid for four years from your first eligible attempt, so plan your attempts within that window.
Three sessions a year: With exams in January, May and September, a failed or missed attempt can be retaken within about four months.
No revalidation: ICAI's FAQs state that Foundation registration cannot be revalidated. If it lapses, check with ICAI about fresh registration.
Exam form: the last condition
Being eligible is not enough on its own; you must also submit the exam form for each session. For January 2027, the form opens on 3 November 2026 on the ICAI Self Service Portal, with 16 November 2026 as the last date without a late fee and 19 November 2026 with a late fee.
Who is not eligible to sit a session
Registered after the cut-off: Students who registered after the four-month deadline for that session.
Class 12 not passed: Students who have not passed Class 12 by the time of the exam.
Registration expired: Students whose four-year validity has run out.
Exam form not submitted: Eligible students who miss the exam form window, including the late-fee period.
Direct entry: who can skip CA Foundation
Some students can join CA Intermediate directly without taking Foundation. According to ICAI's FAQs, the direct entry route is open to:
Commerce graduates and postgraduates: With at least 55% marks.
Other graduates and postgraduates: With at least 60% marks.
ICSI or ICMAI Intermediate passed candidates: Those who have cleared the Intermediate level of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India.
Direct entry students follow separate registration and training conditions for Intermediate, so check the ICAI rules for that route before deciding.
For official rules and registration, use the ICAI Self Service Portal.
