CA Foundation Exam Pattern 2027: Papers, Marks, Timing and Marking Scheme

The CA Foundation exam pattern, set by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), has four papers of 100 marks each, written over four days in a single session. Two papers are subjective and two are objective with negative marking. The January 2027 session runs on 3, 5, 7 and 9 January 2027, with every paper starting at 2 PM IST.

This page explains how each paper is structured, how marking and negative marking work, what you need to pass, and how to manage time in both formats. The mix of written and MCQ papers is what makes Foundation different from most entrance tests: you need neat, structured answers on two days and fast, accurate choices on the other two.

Key changes to know

  • Three sessions a year: ICAI now holds the Foundation exam in January, May and September, so a missed or failed attempt can be retaken within about four months.

  • Paper 2 is Business Laws only: The Business Correspondence and Reporting section from the earlier scheme is gone.

  • Paper 4 is Business Economics only: The Business and Commercial Knowledge section from the earlier scheme is gone.

Older pages may still show the earlier paper names and sections, so follow the latest ICAI announcement and study material.

Language of papers

You can choose English or Hindi as the medium for answering when you fill the exam form. The medium can be changed during the correction window, which for January 2027 runs from 20 to 22 November 2026.

Marking scheme and negative marking

  • Papers 1 and 2: Answers are evaluated by examiners. Marks go to correct working, formats, references to the right legal provisions and clear conclusions, not just final answers.

  • Papers 3 and 4: 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer. Questions you leave blank carry no penalty.

  • Minimums apply per paper: ICAI's passing rule is 40% in each paper and 50% in aggregate. The parts within Paper 3 are not listed as separate passing hurdles.

What the pattern means for you

  • The cost of a wrong guess: If a question carries 1 mark, a wrong answer costs 0.25. Once you can rule out even one option, a guess usually works in your favour; blind guessing on many questions adds risk without much gain. Decide your rule in mocks, not in the exam hall.

  • Each paper is a hurdle on its own: You need at least 40 in every paper. A strong Accounting score cannot rescue a 35 in Quantitative Aptitude.

  • The aggregate is the bigger target: 40 in every paper gives only 160 of 400. You need 200, so plan for scores well above 40 in at least two papers.

  • Two hours is short for 100 marks: In Papers 3 and 4 you have about 1.2 minutes per mark. Time-consuming calculations need a strict skip-and-return rule.

How the result is calculated

To pass, you must score at least 40% in each paper and at least 50% in aggregate in the same sitting. There is no merit list for selection; everyone who meets both conditions passes. ICAI publishes the names of rank holders separately.

Candidate B has the higher total but scored below 40 in Quantitative Aptitude, so does not pass. Candidate A clears every paper and crosses 200. For pass-percentage trends by session, see CA Foundation passing marks and pass percentage.

Time management and exam-day strategy

  1. Use the 15-minute reading time well: In Papers 1 and 2, read every question, mark the ones you will attempt first, and note key figures or sections.

  2. Present Accounting answers cleanly: Use proper formats, show working notes and leave space between answers. Examiners mark steps.

  3. Structure law answers: State the provision, apply it to the facts and give a clear conclusion.

  4. Run two rounds in MCQ papers: Answer the quick questions first, mark the long ones, then return. Leave the last 10 minutes to fill the answer sheet carefully.

  5. Practise at 2 PM: Take full mocks in the afternoon slot so your concentration matches the real exam timing.
