Banking Exams

Canara Bank PO

Canara Bank PO is a recruitment exam for the recruitment of Probationary Officers, relevant to candidates preparing for public and private sector banking careers.

Canara Bank PO is the entry-level officer post (Probationary Officer, Junior Management Grade Scale I) at Canara Bank, one of the large public sector banks in India. The latest cycle is run through the IBPS Common Recruitment Process as CRP PO/MT-XVI, with Canara Bank listed among the participating banks. This page explains where the cycle stands as of 21 October 2026 and what you should do next.

Many older pages still describe a Canara Bank PO exam run by the bank itself, followed by a one-year diploma at a partner institute. Canara Bank's recruitment page now lists its PO hiring under IBPS notifications, so use this page and the official notification, not older articles, to plan your preparation.

How Canara Bank PO Recruitment Works Now

IBPS conducts the common online examinations for the participating public sector banks, and each bank fills its own vacancies from the final merit list. You apply once on the IBPS portal, and you do not apply separately to Canara Bank. At the allotment stage you give bank preferences, and the allotment follows merit, category and the preferences you have filled in.

Canara Bank's official recruitment page lists its Probationary Officer notifications as IBPS CRP cycles, with the lists of provisionally selected candidates published on the bank's site after each cycle. The same page does not list a diploma-based PO notification. Treat any page that mentions a separate Canara Bank PO exam, a 60 percent graduation requirement or a paid diploma programme as describing an older notification, and confirm every detail in the current IBPS notification.

Notification Overview

IBPS released the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification at the end of June 2026, and online registration opened on 1 July 2026. The vacancy list was revised during the registration window, so check the latest annexure before relying on any bank-wise number. The Mains pattern for this cycle is also different from older years, which is covered in the pattern section below.

Exam Pattern

The exam has a Prelims, a Mains and an interview. Prelims is a qualifying screening test, so its marks do not count in the final merit. The figures below come from summaries of the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification, so confirm them in the official PDF.

A wrong objective answer attracts negative marking of one-fourth of the marks for that question, and unattempted questions carry no penalty. Each section is separately timed, so you cannot carry spare minutes from one section to the next.

What this means for you:

  • Reasoning and Data Analysis decide the Mains: They carry 120 of the 200 objective marks.

  • English is short on marks in Mains: It has 40 questions for 20 marks, so do not spend your time there at the cost of the heavier sections.

  • Awareness needs steady reading: It is 60 marks and cannot be crammed in the last week.

Older pages may still show a Mains with fewer questions and a letter-writing descriptive paper, so follow the official notification. See the detailed Canara Bank PO exam pattern page for marking and merit.

Selection Process

  1. Preliminary exam: Qualifying only. You must clear sectional and overall cut-offs.

  2. Main exam: The main scoring stage, with an objective part and a descriptive part.

  3. Personality Test and Interview: The interview carries 100 marks, with minimum qualifying marks reported as 40 percent for General and EWS and 35 percent for reserved categories. The Personality Test is reported as mandatory but non-qualifying.

  4. Provisional allotment: Final merit is reported as Mains and Interview in an 80 to 20 ratio, followed by allotment to banks according to merit and preference.

Salary and Career Growth

The starting basic pay for a Probationary Officer in JMG Scale I has been reported as Rs. 48,480 a month, with further increments in the pay scale and allowances on top. The in-hand figure is not an official number, and it varies by city, allowances and deductions. Check the pay details in the notification and the bank's joining instructions.

Officers join as Probationary Officers, complete the bank's probation, and are confirmed as Scale I officers. Further promotion depends on the bank's internal policy and performance.

How to Prepare

Start with the stage that eliminates the most candidates. That is the Prelims for most people, but the Mains decides your final rank, so do not leave it for later.

  • Weeks 1 to 8: Build concepts in Quant, Reasoning and English, and read one business newspaper daily.

  • From week 3: Add 30 to 40 minutes of current affairs and banking awareness, with monthly notes.

  • From week 6: Take topic tests and 20-minute sectional tests.

  • From week 10: Practise Mains-level puzzles, data analysis and typed descriptive answers.

  • Final phase: Take full-length mocks, analyse them the same day and revise your error log.

Cut-Off Reference

Cut-offs are released by IBPS for each stage. The Prelims overall cut-off for the General category was reported at 49.21 out of 100 in the previous cycle and 49.68 in this cycle. Cut-offs change every year with difficulty, vacancies and the number of applicants, so treat last year's figures as a benchmark only and aim for a clear margin above them. See the full Canara Bank PO cut off page for category-wise tables.

Official updates are posted on the Canara Bank recruitment page and the IBPS website.
